I'll gladly go back to PS2 graphics if the money saved was spent innovating in other areas instead.
Even indie games or rather AA games look so good now, we never gonna go back to ps2 lvl of graphics :)
Keep in mind this game is mid tier budget AA that only needed 3 years of devtime:
Base ps5 gameplay(no bullshot fake trailer, actual gameplay), not even a pr0 or topend pc but base ps5, still it looks the way it looks:

I remember losing my mind when I first saw Oblivion's graphics. There will always be something better in the future. Things have been stagnant for a while now, but I think with ai and new game engines, we might see another leap forward. Especially in human face modeling, we could witness some dramatic changes.

As for whether we need it… As someone who still enjoys playing games that are 20-30 years old, I don't think it's necessary. But I also can't deny how much visuals can add to the experience.

Yes.

It's called progress. Do you want to be stuck the same graphics for the next 20 years?

No. I would be happy if we stopped on uncharted 4. And that's 1080p30fps uncharted 4. that was fine already.
But 4k60, rtgi is all WELCOME but will never replace a good craftsmanship.
A movie like... idk matrix on a dvd still looks better than any game out there and it's 480 fucking p

I've been at "good" but not "good enough" yet. Give me the best graphics that can be squeezed out after getting those sweet 60 fps.

Not better graphics, but better physics, interaction and destruction. I'm really happy for the new DK because of its approach to this aspect.

Resolution benefits not only eliminating jaggies/cleaner image quiality, it also makes world detail pop more, the more graphical fidality game has the higher resolution is required to actually apreciate it.
30fps is okish for some games but 60 is superior, only genres that dont suffer too much coz of it are turnbased strategy/rpgs coz u dont need fast reaction time/fluidity of gameplay there.

GTA IV 2025? Better graphics tho.

Almost every game that tries to look realistic needs better animation and motion capture.

Many, many 2D games need hand-drawn animation.

Etc. Graphical fidelity though? The top games look great but most games don't come close to those heights.

The funny thing is... 4 years from san andreas to gta 4 and the graphics, physics, details, size of the game. All were INCREDIBLE and I was stunned (we all were here, I remember the OT).
no way gta 5 to 6 is as big of a jump considering... 12 years, so 3 times the jump

Personally felt we hit "good enough" years ago. If we could just standardize at least 60fps in all games, that would be great.

Honestly, no. And if 8K ever becomes mainstream, I'd be happy with 4K 60 fps in the heart of that, because I don't desire 10 year dev cycles for games!

I agree, with the current state. But I think the next great leap in graphics is going to be real-time AI interpretation of graphics to be realistic.

It's already in the works--not real-time--where they can do this. For example:

I dont like this. I want my games to look like games still

I just want better art direction. We have PS2 games that are more cinematic looking than anything released today.

P.S. I do not consider CGI fests like Avatar to be cinema.

Im pretty good at where we are right now, even the PS4 and Xbox One era realy. Some 360 and PS3 games are more than playable but do show there age. I would rather the next 5-10yrs work on higher IQ and allowing tech to catch up to highend RT so we can enjoy the bells and whistles of todays graphics and features but at higher res and higher frame rates. I can see this happening with the direction of the handhelds now, with PS, Xbox now getting involved I can see next gen version of games having all the top end stuff on the flagship consoles and cut back version for handheld mode (heavy use of dlss/FSR, NO RT lower settings). Some wouldnt be happy with this as they want to see the limit pushed at all times but think it would be good in the long run.

I'd say we don't need better graphics, but we still need better performance. I want to play 4K per-eye VR at some point.

Didn't need better graphics than what we had with PS2-3 era. Still don't.
I don't need realistic graphics for anything, really. If I want to see the veins of a leaf reflecting the light, I'll go outside and look at a tree.

I feel bad for people who need graphics to spell out the last details of everything to them so their brains can remain dormant instead of tickling the imagination.

That said, there is definitely a use for higher computational power within the realms of what makes games interesting: gameplay & mechanics (incl simulation of parts). And as that grows, it only makes sense that the graphics do as well - I just don't care much about that part.

From a "what the visuals actually provide" in terms of whaat we have today for texture and model detail, shadows, particle effects, etc - no.

I just want 60 fps to be the bare minimum across everything and native resolution rendering. also fuck RT refections. SSR was just fucking fine for gaming purposes and didn't kneecap frame rates.

I've been playing a lot more ps2 and ps3 the past few months and having a ton of fun because game design didn't suck balls then.

Them trying to increase the graphics breaks everything alse in the industry.
We don't even need a next generation of consoles.

yeah. I don't even think ps5 base got a good leg into this gen.... let alone ps5 pro.... and ps6 is right around the corner probably

In almost every game there's still texture pop-ins, clipping and other visual bugs so yes, we do need better graphics.

Yea overall but I would be fine with 5 years of necessary mastering of current tech to optimize games for 60 fps consistently.

I'd like to see more art style focus rather than polygon focus.

Then we can bump it up a notch. Like wtf out is actually making use of a 5090 to its fullest? Nothing. Just unoptimized messes relying on it to help offset is poor optimization.

I think graphical power matters most when artists and directors are fully able to realise their vision. I think we're getting close to the point where there's enough graphical capability of the software and hardware to do any job that's needed.

What's going to be cool and I don't even know if o will be alive to see it. But at some point games will be so quick and easy to make. At first it will be something like the devs only need to make ver basic models of things and ai will fill in the rest. Then at after that gaming will be a you tube like experience. You really just feed ideas into an ai and get the results. After that I don't even know if there will even be big major releases from big companies any more.

It's pretty scary how actually close we are to that.

I have always been a graphics whore. I want graphics to reach photo realism or look like a live TV show lol.

This. I used to care about graphics but those times are long gone. The price of us having to wait that much longer for new games to be released is just not worth it.

I'll say yes eventually since we are close but still one tiny step before looking like real life. But it's not that important at the moment. I'll rather they focus on improving the processing power so more advance AI and scripts could be process better.

Yes
But I'd prefer improvements in AI and physics first. Give me big interactive worlds first over better graphics

nah, im good. it's fun to get a new game now and then that impresses visually but the reality is games have looked good enough for a long time. im always down for good artstyle though.

if anything devs should scale back for a bit while hardware catches up.

such diminishing returns the last few gens.

lots of studios out here hiding their shit game design behind pretty worlds though so i get it.

I want gameplay that feels more fun, and is more unique, than anything else. I feel like we've lost that so much, especially in the realm of AAA/big budget games. Indies and AA continue to carry that torch, and I'm glad that we at least have them.

This generation was only ever meant to be "RTX time", and related. I don't really know when the next huge graphic bump will happen, I doubt it'll be sooner than later.

I was fine way back when Dreamcast released. I don't really need anything better than that, honestly. South of Midnight, Hi-Fi Rush, Hades, the likes of those, show me the industry still have what it takes to make amazing looking games without realism.

Are we counting fps as graphics? If so, then yes. Let's crank it up to 240! But if we are not counting FPS, then no, I don't need more at all

So I have a PS5 Pro and lately I'm still playing and catching up on some PS4 games, and I think they still look great! Jumps in visual performance have certainly slowed down now and next gen will probably be an even smaller jump.

What I want to see if BIG improvements in enemy AI. Honestly I think AI progressed up until the PS2 gen and then just plateaued.

I've been playing Forza Horizon 2 on my Series X; it looks and runs so well. I can't imagine next gen will be that much better than this gen when it comes to graphics and with backwards compatibility being improved by modern hardware, I'm good.

I would eventually want better graphics down the road, but the priority should be better animations, physics, interactivity, and improved NPC behavior who just don't stand in one place and actually react and adapt to things.

I also would prefer more focus on art direction and presentation in general. Good graphics don't fix a lack of compelling soundtrack/sound design, game feel, gameplay, animations, story, and overall consistency.

Developers just keep making their game bigger, tack on RPG mechanics and bloat and use shoddy automated animations and set dressing environments.

I dont like this. I want my games to look like games still
I'm sure there will still be those, just like World of Warcraft came out the same year as something like Doom 3 that, while it still had a distinctive art style, went for more realism. Those AI videos are the logical endpoint of chasing realistic graphics though, imo.
