South of Midnight |OT| Don't stop me-weavin'

out of interest, how long was Atomfall and what was your opinion of it in the end?

apologies, everyone else for derailing. Ill bring it back
Really good game. Playtime was 17 hours with a decent amount of exploring but still had a bunch of leads I didn't resolve.

I'd give it an 8.5/10. The story / mysteries are great, world is great, writing is great. I can't wait for the DLC. I want more of the world to explore.

Thanks so much. It's literally set about 40 to 50 miles from where I live, so I want to check it out for sure.

the world/setting is brilliant.

just don't expect a Fallout game. game is much more difficult with survival elements. ammo is incredibly scarce, inventory management is a huge pain in the ass, no fast travel whatsoever, etc.

At least you gave it a fair crack…
Lol. Well I was trying. I beat Avowed so I was hoping this would be up my alley too but it was immediately clear it wasn't. I'm sure it's a fine game, just not for me, unskipable dialog combined with rambling and slow gameplay turned me off. Going to try Commando's next here.

If anything I thought the start was great - chapter 1 running through that hurricane. But yes, it's annoying that you can't skip lines of dialog (only cutscenes as a whole). I think there are options to speed up the dialog, so people could try that?

I just don't think anything of gameplay significance is revealed in the first 10 minutes that would make someone nope out. That might come a few chapters in. Each to their own though, people like what they like!

Such a pretty game.

Finished up to Chapter 6.

The Cherry sub-plot was pretty gut-wrenching, I can't stand things about hurting or dying babies/kids.

I appreciate the HUD customization options here that let you enable the HUD only in combat. Keep the image completely HUD-less during general traversal.

I did the opening. Not impressed so far. It looks great but it seems that compulsion have good artists but the gameplay is not feeling great early on.

Feels janky. Jumping doesn't feel great. I'll give it another go tomorrow as I'm a bit tired too.l but early impressions are great artwork and style/idea but like other compulsion games. I don't think it feels food to play...and it is a game.

I always felt that Hazel's jumping is, I don't know how to say it, a bit light. It feels like I am controlling a feather. But I got over it. Also, the game really starts only at the third chapter. Last thing, I think you would be able to appreciate it better if you approach it as a story focused adventure first and a platformer second.

The opening isn't indicative. In fact, Chapters 2 and 3 correspond to the tutorial (combat and platforming) and are less linear environments, inviting you to explore for collectibles and skill points.

I recommend playing through Chapters 2 and 3 (there are 14 chapters) to get a better understanding.
But as mentioned above, only because the art and visuals, the story, and the interesting characters, and it only lasts 11-12 hours... Personally, I'm grateful for a game of this type after several 30+ hour games.

Finished it.

This game should be taught in school, the gameplay. It is a great example what to how not to design your game.

This would be better as an animated film than a game. 5/10

Finished till Chapter 8.

Some really good music and usage of musical cues in the Rougarou boss fight. Kind of like a southern US version of how Nier Automata uses music in boss fights.

Also, it is a very pretty game to look at.

I looked at the achievements list, there's one for getting every single one in the game, lol.

I don't think I'll be 1000G-ing this game at this time, maybe later :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I think I only missed like 8 readables and 200 floof. Must have missed at least one tin flip.

There are achievements for beating each boss without taking damage, seems like it'll be impossible but maybe they're easy to get on lower difficulties.

Started Chapter 3. I think I'll keep the combat where it is. It's not that hard and I've already got several 'spells'. I've gone back to look for Floofs. :)
The game is gorgeous to look at and I love the music. Maybe I can do a Chapter or 2 a day.

Appreciate the responses guys. I'll stick with it. The game grabbed me straight away and then when I started walking around it felt off. I don't quite understand the camera or if it's an issue with my 8 bitdo ultimate. If I turn the camera with a hard lock to the analogue limit it turns slowly. If I gradually press it and get like half way it suddenly zooms about. I guess it's acceleration I can't turn off?

I'll deffo give it a go to chapter 3 and hopefully it clicks with me 😀

Stick sensitivity by default is far too low.

Its at 100. I had to raise it to 120 to feel good. Dunno why they did that. Game is 60 fps. This makes it feel quite a lot more janky.

Yeah, up the mouse sensitivity. That's the first thing I had to do when I started it. The default is too low.

The lack of Photo Mode for such a graphically special game is incomprehensible.
The studios should have understood by now that Photo Mode isn't just an extra option; it also serves as a platform for games' visibility on social media. Even more so in games with limited advertising.

How old is Hazel supposed to be? Because she looks in her late teens at the youngest, yet she's crying about being left alone by her mum as if she's 6. I've only had enough time to play the first chapter so far but my god she's a whiny irritant off the bat. Hopefully that changes.
The game also suffers with that character talking every single second nonsense. "The voices are getting louder, they must be close". Yeah, I understand how sound works. Just be quiet for 5 seconds and let me soak in the atmosphere.

The game looks absolutely beautiful.

Yeah, she never shuts up. I don't know if there is an in-game setting or not to keep her dialogues down, but she talks A LOT.

If people thought Aloy from Horizon talked too much, they wouldn't be able to sit through this.

So many fucking negative people here.

It's a new IP and it's a lot of fun. Combat IS good, game looks amazing. Music is amazing. And just because she's mixed, doesn't make it a 'woke' game. Who gives a shit. It has a lot of atmosphere and is very different.

Haters are likely Sony fanboys shitting on yet another MS released game.

It's a weird mix of console warriors and bigots in here

Eh, I disagree on combat. It's not bad but I just finished Ch 3 and it's just ok. Love the setting, story and art direction though.

7/10 for me so far

Finished it. It was a great audio visual experience, but pretty bad as a game. Still enjoyed it, because i like games like this, but i skipped the combat after chapter 11, should've done it earlier, its just a chore at that point. Also the final boss fight was a huge disappointment. Did they run out of creative ideas or what? Characters were great, VA and music and art was top notch

I still don't know what the point of the combat is, other than just purely padding the game to make it longer.

Reminds me of the Prince of Persia game, the one with Elika girl. I really loved the look and traversal in that game but the combat was just a irritating time padder. Luckily the fighting can be turned off SOM.

Yeah just finished chapter 3 and I don't see a whole lot of the criticism as valid. Part of the negativity might be that gamers have been conditioned over the past decade to expect everything to be 60 hour open world slogs with lots of useless systems and upgrade paths so that you feel like a big special boy for wasting your time learning it all and completing every braindead fetch quest.

Specific to fanboys, it's wild to me that such a thing still exists. 70% of PS/Xbox gamers are over 25 years old now. It's really time for a lot of these guys to get a life.

I wrote in the shitty Steam thread that this game is pretty much like the original Psychonauts. It's very creative, has some slightly janky controls, and will be a cult classic pretty much.

Finally got to play it today. I am at chapter 5 and I really like it. A bit simple in terms of gameplay, but the beautiful world to explore and the sublime OST make for a great experience so far.

Will play more tonight.

Ok, chapter three was pretty epic - nice little story too.

Im finding a groove for the combat now, but it's still pretty basic and I can see it getting repetitive quite quickly. Definitely not its strong point thus far!

you can turn off combat in settings?? then you play the game without enemies?
all the fights are in set places so it's not like there are enemies wandering about. From the description in settings it looks like you just can just go to the menu and choose skip in those encounters if you turn it on. Didn't use it myself. The combats is simplistic and easy but I can see people getting bored of it for sure.

Finished chapter 6 and man I am loving it. Its extremely beautiful, creative, atmospheric game with a very interesting setting and good enough story. Yes the combat and platforming is barely OK, but its fine by me.
For some reason it reminds me Banishers: Ghosts of new Eden every now and then.
And the
Bunny story in chapter 6 kinda wrecked me. As a father of a 2 year old little girl it was hard to digest.

Looking at buying this on my Series X but if fighting can be turned off, then what is the main crux of this game? Does it then become a walking sim with platforming elements?
You can turn off the boss fights and chase scenes too. So then it is pretty much just a walking sim. Running from scene to scene. Not worth buying. If you have game pass, then maybe run through it if you're interested in the story.

Just beat the game. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Combat was fine but repetitive, however, you can definitely find a flow.

Would love a sequel, shame we likely won't.

Hopefully, it gets ported to PS5 and Switch 2 so more people can play it.

I'm really enjoying it. I needed a game like this that was simple, straightforward, and visually stunning.
I'm enjoying the stories and tales, these were pretty creepy 😅

One of the most beautifull game I play this gen. Sadly HDR level can't be show. I LOVE the lighting in SoM
