MindsEye, the new game from the former GTA producer, is considered a “complete disaster”

How do I get the surprised pikachu emoji? Is that only reserved for super gold members?

Only Rockstar can deliver a game like this these days. Even if it wasn't buggy, it looks on rails.
We don't necessarily need a direct competitor for GTA and even the large publishers like Sony and Ubisoft have failed to make their own similar games. The next Mafia game is a great example here - 2K ditched the idea of making it feel like an open world and they're going for a high quality linear experience. Problem is that it still requires a good story and setting, as well as a decent budget and talented devs. Mindseye seems to be lacking on all fronts.

I do agree that Mafia looks good and I have enjoyed the previous games and the next one looks great, but I wouldn't mind some competition for Rockstar. For me, the Saints Row games were that until part 3.

Producers have no creative input on a game (or at least they should not), they are supporters, organizing other people's work and making sure everything is done smoothly and on time.
And given how different every project is from another, it's entirely possible for a good producer to be involved in a shitty project.

If we're to label every buggy game as trash, then 95% of new releases these days would qualify. A 15-hour runtime doesn't sound too bad imo- I'll definitely check it out since I'm a big fan of GTA

Imagine the private equity pitch though: "I've got a GTA creator willing to make us a game! I just need a small investment".

Baths will be taken on this one. A few poor bastards out there are already on the phone with realtors.

sounds ok. 15 hours long traditional cover shooter with driving around?
We don't have these too often.
As long as it's not complete trash, I am in for some AA game

Sounds like GTA except you take out the insane budget and visuals and attention to detail and open world activities and good feeling driving ...but you still get the kinda bad shooting and bland encounter design.

Soooo I had completely forgotten that MindsEye was originally supposed to be part of a grander plan by Benzies called Everywhere. Everywhere was aiming to be a massively online community of game creation tools so users could create their own worlds and they'd all be seamlessly interconnected. Sorta like a Roblox for adults kind of thing.

MindsEye was supposed to be an episodic game tied into the Everywhere framework that would serve as an example of what could be done within the game tools. Apparently the entire Everywhere project has been floundering so now they're scrambling to put out what they've managed to get done with MindsEye and they've turned Everywhere's Arcadia creation tools into a bullet point for MindsEye.

That explains why it looks super janky. They're trying to cobble together a complete game out of things originally designed as episodic content (and partly a tech demo) for their creation engine.

Edit: Here's a RPS article from 2023 where it was originally announced and an RPS article from March 2025 wondering what happened to Everywhere.

Edit 2: Not even a year ago Everywhere had posted a 15 minute long beta video with signups for people interested to try their beta builder program. Now, outside of these videos and a few news articles, Everywhere's been scrubbed from the internet. Every old Everywhere page link redirects you to a MindsEye page.

This motherfucker is going straight to the bargain bin.

It seems like they're trying to bite off more than they can chew. If this game is supposed to dovetail into their Everywhere game product that hasn't even launched, how is anyone going to make sense of any of it? I appreciate the ambition but this feels like a made-for-TV movie for a channel that doesn't even exist.

From what I can gather based on reading old articles from 2023 and watching some of the Everywhere videos on YouTube, Everywhere was supposed to launch first and MindsEye was supposed to be episodic content drops within Everywhere. Edit: And the episodic drops were also designed to give users new/more assets for their own creations.

Why not wait for reviews to judge it? Previews through a stream with a unfinished build? Who cares
This game has more red flags than a Chinese Victory parade.

It doesn't even look like a 5/10 from the trailers.

If it turns out great then great but from all the information provided so far this unfortunately looks like a dud.

I figured that was the case. Classic cart before the horse. I wonder if they delayed Everywhere due to lack of interest upon reveal and the strategy became putting this game out first as an intro/to familiarize people with the whole ecosystem. Just seems kind of dead on arrival.

Sounds like modern day take on a game from the PS3/360 era. This already sounds more interesting than what 99% of AAA games are today. Looking forward to the reviews.

It was obvious as soon as i heard it was created in this Roblox like environment to sell as content creation pipeline. 500 or so people employed to make crap. Utter waste
Maybe I missed it, but until recently I didn't know it was made by their content creation program which they were plugging too. I thought the game was totally on its own.

Mindseye looks exactly like sci-fi game they promoted using their tool, except it's reskinned as current day dude with rifle and some sci fi drone stuff.

this is proof that one great developer / producer does not a great game make.
It's a very media centric kind of view where a guy who works on a big game or movie seems to get easy money to make a new thing on their own. Lots of money floating around in tech and media.

On the other hand, lets say a director at Coke quit and asked every bank or investment company he wants to make a top selling soft drink and needs $50 or $100M to hire a bunch of people to make and sell it and some more money to build a bottling plant.

Nobody would give a shit he worked at Coke even if he worked there for 20 years. He'd get shot down fast.

But in gaming, any company with a lot of money to spend seems to be really freewheeling with their funds.

indeed. I always chuckle to myself when people start chatting shit about rockstar's games, when they have no idea just how to create something of the quality of GTA5 or RDR.2. From a design concept and script perspective its pretty easy, but for an actual technical execution, it is insanely difficult.

Gamers seem to think games of their size and detail are easy to make it would seem, and that one repeated quote 'we need the benz' as if he is some kind of miracle worker is really just someone directing the dev team properly, they are the real magic workers
