Xbox has announced a multi-year agreement with AMD to co-engineer new silicon chips for the next-generation of Xbox consoles

$1000 for a console

Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson - Scream (Official Video) on Make a GIF

We hit $700 for a console (and +$80 if you want physical support) in 2024.

It's only gonna go up in 2026, 2027 for premium devices.

Why is this lady the one informing me of such news? We're talking about Xbox and AMD here. I don't see how an ethnically ambiguous HR manager is the right messenger. It does allow Microsoft to tick a lot of ESG boxes with a single person though. When I think of Xbox, I think of basement couches and gravity bongs. AMD reminds me of the most stereotypical PC gamers you can imagine. We need technical nerds back in the spotlight in the gaming industry. It's been shit since the admin class has taken a greater interest in the day-to-day operations and announcements. Is J Allard available?

I'm seriously going to call this thing the Series "Y/WHY". Not sure "why" they are even trying hardware anymore unless they are going in an entirely different direction. Since it seems like and literally every company is going away from exclusives, what's the point in this again? What will it offer besides slightly more power that you can't get elsewhere?

They said its multiple sku also. So probably a 1k one and a 2k one. Thats not outlandish for a pre-built pc. Then whatever the absolute bare minimum hardware is to carry over Series BC stuff which is what, plus $150 to production cost? And handheld will be the cheap options at 500 and 800, Play Anywhere only (for now? Hopefully) for the ROG and normal PCs.

It does seem like a fruitless endeavor, doesn't it? But the main concern of Xbox customers, especially in this forum, is "what happens to my library"?

If MS managed to squeeze Series S hardware inside a PC, something that we know can be done, then they can make a Hybrid machine that legally can run Xbox games without breaking contracts. And if that means easing their customers into being PC gamers then maybe it can work? But the hard part is seeing all that as being worth the costs.

As i said, I fail to see how they are suppose to make any money with this.

Premium devices not aimed at mass market and sold at a proft? Yup, sounds like the PS5 Pro and Xbox Next.

Welp, gonna wait it out when this next Console comes out and see what it does.

I believed the hype back at TGA 2019. Hasn't come fi circle for me.

Maybe a $1000 series upgrade called the Xbox Series XXX.

That way you can really feel fucked over by Microsoft when that thing just racks up dust from no games.

If someone is dedicated enough, they might be willing to buy it just to rescue their library. But I personally feel it would be simpler just to buy a spare Series S just in case the Xbox they had broke down. Hybrids are never efficient use of your money.

They need to offer various price points like a Steam Machine V2 with 400, 600, 800, 1000 price points or something like that but it NEEDS to play every Xbox game on top of PC storefronts, that would be huge, otherwise if it does not play all Xbox games i wouldnt consider it a true Xbox console (duh).

If Xbox is being phased out and you have a library then you either 1)move to PS6 and keep a Series S. Or 2) move to PC and keep a Series S. Or 3) move to this specific PC that has hardware BC bundled in.

All 3 options are likely at least 1k total.

besides slightly more power ? well the xbox logo and the expensive price tag I would say.

The brand is on life support as is and they are trying anything to survive

They can't keep bringing close to the same product to market as Playstation and in the same time frame and hope to get anywhere

Trust me I don't think this is the way but I also think its better for them to at least attempt something different
I would think the something different should be exclusive games (no PC), and lots of them with huge AAA unmissable releases, and remove day 1 GamePass titles. 🤷‍♂️

But I suspect they're more worried about Steam than PlayStation right now.

Bet there will be a way to access traditional desktop, it will just have simplified ui like steam big picture
But how much would they charge for this?

I seriously think $1000 is optimistic. More like $1200 fore the weakest possible configuration. This isn't a console with PC parts, this is a PC with console parts. That means PC prices+extra.

Due to using exclusive AMD chips, this ''xbox'' looks more like a 3DO with windows than a PC, which means that a PC is a better investment for those who don't want the PS6.

What a rollercoaster though with the thread a couple of days ago that Xbox was canceled and people dancing in the streets to now those people are, well, where are they now?

Confused Looking For GIF by Looney Tunes
I know This things are set way before.. but also things change rapidly in this industry.. any chance they were ready to give up and than saw Sony fucking up this gen (dont @me shills about ps5 sales) and thought "welp lets try one more time" ?? Aiming maybe to recoup some marketshare for next gen.

From the Xbox team there has never been a single peep of them throwing in the towel.

Now did the powers that be that are cutting those checks to fund Xbox consider forcing them to give up?

Don't know

Didn't Satya famously try to close or spin off Xbox before Phil convinced him otherwise at the start of the One generation?

the Xbox OS is built on the Windows kernel. It would hardly be an effort to 'rewrite' the app lol.
That's two different things, the video specifically mentions working with the Windows team to make Windows the number one gaming platform. The Xbox side will be treated as legacy.

Not sure what your point is. Whether they go with a streamlined "Xbox" OS or Windows as we know it, it's all just Windows under the hood.

I vaguely remember something along those lines but Phil especially has never wavered in keeping Xbox alive.

Even when some ex employees have taken shots at Xbox because they got cut out of the gaming industry there was not a hint Xbox was stopping hardware

Said ex employees no longer get valuable intel from them and they have an axe to grind btw :)

Sorry side rant
