I'm out for Blood
They only had 3 months worth of pre-tariffs hardware shipments for the US back in May.
Yep. All about pricing strategy. Everything changes when there is a lack of competition. Folks can disagree but I firmly believe the end of the console war has as big a part to play here as anything else going on in the world.
Thanks for that update
I have known for quite some time Xbox wanted a 1-2 year window of trying to sell the Xbox 2 without the PS6 being in the picture, seems like that wont happen now
So, you believe the tariffs made them increase in Europe (2022) and japan (2024)... More power to you nial
I wouldn't agree it's always a terrible idea, but I think we both agree there isn't a corporate on Earth who'd eat the Tariffs. It's forced on them, so they pass it along. And if we were just talking about a one-off price increase on the back of The Orange One's tariffs, then I'd probably not have much to say - there's honestly not a whole lot to be done. But the groundhog Sony consult for price increases has been working overtime - citing economics, inflation, currency conversion, costs, and soon-to-be tariffs. At some point, Sony stopped passing along unavoidable increases due to market fluctuations and started toward "more profitable than all prior console generations combined". And now that the market has shown it can survive multiple unnecessary price increases per generation - defended by their biggest whales, no less - they've got a way to generate the profits their GAAS push couldn't: fleece your customers for every red fucking cent until they bleed and the market crashes. They have no competition - they can literally do whatever they want.... Either way it's always a terrible idea to ask corporations to eat the extra cost of tariffs themselves... Regular people always pay the most for tariff-increased prices. All economists have stated this.
Why?Either way it's always a terrible idea to ask corporations to eat the extra cost of tariffs themselves.
So... Why didn't they decrease the price again? I know Covid, blast from the past, but stillUnless........Sony releases the PS6 in 2028.
Something very major was happening globally in 2022. I just can't remember the name of it................
I can't wait to pay more money for stuff!Gamescom:

Are you living in a bubble? It's not just this. Everything is going up in price because of his tarrifs. And it's just going to get worse. He's hiding it by threatening Amazon and other places so they don't show the customer a breakdown of how badly he is screwing us so he can just lie and say it isn't happening.Ah yes, whining about 50 bucks when the alternative was 9% inflation that you paid every day and likely higher taxes. But 50 bucks! Oh noes!! Fuck off with that shit.
PS5 today with today tech can't be 399, let alone ps6 with future tech. 399 is gone forever I believe. Happy to be wrong but I don't think I will beI don't think any person believed the PS6 would be $399.
4500 is not 1440p pc card, thats a blender card5090 - $4500
I get your point but yeah, GPUs are expensive
Their GPU prices have become very unreasonable, they'll lose the next generation of gamers entirely if they keep the greed up too much, and they'll have to have something to fall back on should there be any kind of AI bubble that bursts.Meanwhile in Europe even NVIDIA is lowering their prices.
this is exactly why tariffs can be blamed more than not btw. Even in a scenario where sony's supply chain was not affected by the tariffs, they could just jack up prices anyway & use tariffs as an excuse. even if it were purely greed its still 47iq's fault for giving them a believable out.Tariff's are definitely a factor, but don't believe for a second these companies won't use any disruption as an excuse to jack their prices well above covering the difference.
Great point. I don't know why I was hoping for something that would be impossible to ask for. And we literally got the price increases pushed back by 3 months too.
Some truth here too.

That applies to assembled consoles, sure. And Sony noted "economic pressure" not "tariffs" in their previous price hikes. I haven't seen their financial justifications for this round, though. There are no and have never been import tariffs on vg consoles:
In the PS5 price increase thread there are pages and pages of people repeating the same misinformation ad nauseum, i.e. that Trump tariffs are to blame for the PS5 US price increase and the semi-recent price increases of other consoles.
It's just not true!
I'm not a republican. I'm not even American. But I know how to use Google and the US provides a handy website where you can go and find out what all the current tariffs are for various products you can import into the US:
The Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS) ---- https://hts.usitc.gov/
To save you all time...

It's almost as if "regular people" aren't the most important ones for certain powerful people. There's truth here. However, let's keep in mind that this particular price increase occurred after Xbox and Nintendo had already implemented their price increases in America. Either way it's always a terrible idea to ask corporations to eat the extra cost of tariffs themselves.

Tariff's are definitely a factor, but don't believe for a second these companies won't use any disruption as an excuse to jack their prices well above covering the difference. The PlayStation 5 has made more profit than all other generations of PlayStation combined - and Sony is still raising prices. They don't want to cover the difference, they don't want to deliver value, they don't want happy players - they want every single fucking cent their customers have and they're done playing nice. Tariffs or not - if Sony can get away with it, everyone else will follow suite and they'll all keep going until the market crashes.
That applies to assembled consoles, sure. And Sony noted "economic pressure" not "tariffs" in their previous price hikes. I haven't seen their financial justifications for this round, though.
With that said, console components - including controllers and even packaging - could be subject to US tariffs.
And because of globalisation, tariff changes anywhere can ripple out, causing exactly the kind of unstable market conditions we're seeing in a lot of industries. The Orange One's tariffs might not target video game consoles directly, but it could still shake out here none the less.
Yeah It's pretty much on sale every quarter. The only saving grace in Europe is that the PS5 is frequently on sale. The normal price for the Digital edition is 500 euros, but you're a thief of your own wallet if you buy it at that. You can get one for 399 now.
Its more like xbox top heads wanted dead xbox for the most part, us console gamers love competition, coz its good for customer, ps2/og xbox/gcn/dreamcast gen was most competetive and it was amazing for the players- consoles were dirt cheap, all consoles had plethora of high quality exclusive games, companies were fighting recklessly for customers, unlike now unfortunately...100% agree this has way more to do with Xbox being dead and greed kicking in more than anything political
People wanted a dead Xbox, this is what happens

It's only PR talk for now. They have done nothing to produce their consoles in US yet. They may well be happy with keeping China to assemble their consoles instead of making expensive investments in US. Current Sony is not known for having any kind of long term strategy.Sony already mentioned that they are moving away from China, and in a few months we shall see that price will stabilize possibly next year. It is even possible for price cut this coming Christmas season.
Once all companies have move away from China towards other countries with lesser tariffs, and more factories are build in USA, the supply and price will stabilize, due to better negotiations with the government, which will receive more tax incentives, and easier source of raw materials. It will be better in the long run.
Can't say i'm surprised, that's a long wait for the green rangers2027 is looking more and more likely tbh
Companies have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders. Why should Sony absorb these dumbass tariffs when they can pass them along as companies have literally forever. Especially when there's a convenient scapegoat in the form of the dude who literally made the shit decisions to implement said tariffs?
I'm just saying that people naively look at such issues from a one-sided perspective, just exactly as the corporations want.Explain why MS and Nintendo raised their prices in the US then if it isn't about tariffs and inflation.
Not even remotely true. Which components are taxed and tariffed and at what rates isn't a generality - often subject to a myriad of complex trade deals and agreements - which is why controllers are tariffed while the consoles you need to use them aren't.... The mere fact that the whole console has no tariff tells you the same is true for the constituent componentry...
You've failed to understand the point: tariffs on product A creates ripples which impact the pricing of product B - whether simply due to opportunistic pricing, or the long chain of modern global economics. You're you're pretending you can simplify something which isn't simple - which is why you're being told you're wrong in more than one thread.... None of the raw materials going into console parts that are fabricated and assembled in China are being imported from the US. So, any ripple effects from unrelated US tariffs on non-console related materials and components would affect the console supply chain...
No, I think you quoted the wrong person. I declared Sony's price hikes a matter of greed, not international trade relations. In my response above I said that while tariffs may be a factor, companies will use it run away with their pricing. Because of greed. Because that's all it is. Better luck next time.... You're looking for a boogeyman in US tariffs that isn't there.
Haha, came here to post this. Warriors on strict observation!Meanwhile in Europe even NVIDIA is lowering their prices.
In fact, I'm close to doing that... If Xbox, Nintendo and Playstation continue with this nonsense.
In fairness that's true of all consoles this gen, even the series S of all things.Sony may start selling the PS5 in wine shops; the older it gets, the more expensive it becomes.
