Tencent punches back at Horizon Zero Dawn lawsuit, says game isn't that unique - Aloy isn't central to brand

Yes, robot dinos aren't new. But look at the picture again. They didn't just make any random robot dinos. They made some that look almost exactly like the ones designed specifically for Horizon. And then they put them in promo material that blatantly rips off Horizon. All this after Sony rejected their pitch for a Tencent made Horizon game.

These are very different situations.
Creative rip-offs, such as designs, are not going to win in court, especially in video games. That's why the Pokemon company is going for another route by suing gameplay elements instead of design.
Horizon has different gameplay than Moritan, which is closer to Monster Hunter games and survival games.

nah dude. I vividly remember that the concept art got leaked, and people didn't even believe a game like that was possible, especially coming from Guerrilla. ... too bad the narrative and design execution ended up being Ubisoft-esque. Such a waste of technical and artistic talent.

Tencent is literally larger than Sony Corp. More than than twice the market cap.

Lol Horizon being "boring and forgettable" has nothing to do with the problem here. Tencent asked Sony if they could make a Horizon game. Sony said no. So Tencent ripped off the game and made their own.

Unless you're suggesting theft is fine if it's stealing from someone you don't like?

Reminder of what Tencent is trying to defend here:

Look like Pokémon and dragon quest. Everything is fine

What's your view on Palworld vs Pokemon?

Embarrassing plagiarism, I can't believe how people think it's not and "Nintendo bad" like any business in the world they and Sony will protect their IP.

I'm not arsed what happens as I don't have any relationship with either company but blatant plagiarism sucks.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I don't see Sony winning this. It's almost certainly heading for a settlement, with Tencent making some minor, largely cosmetic changes so Sony can claim the lawsuit wasn't a waste of time and money.

Neither are cute chibi monsters by Nintendo. This is why this whole IP conversation is retarded.
yep, but Nintendo even has a stronger case than Sony since the whole assets were ripped from Pokemon creature's assets. While Moritam is just a similarly looking design without any stolen assets.

Many things can be true at once.

Alloy isn't unique and is bland and derivative.

Horizon isn't that crucial to the PlayStation brand.

Tencent blatantly copied Horizon.

For most instances, I would agree, but this is clearly blatant. Tencent literally went to Sony, showed them the game, and asked them to license the Horizon name to them so they can release it as a Horizon game.
Please, sony just feels threatened by this since they know if tencent releases an MMO with a setting remotely similar to horizon, whatever chances they had of making a horizon MMO goes down the drain. We all know which of the two have better chances of releazing a successful live service game of this type.

I hope that Sony will make a couple of games full of loli girls with boobs and ass so that this kind of topic full of hope they fail will end

Jesus, this is incredibly blatant.

I'm no fan of Sony, Guerilla or the Horizon games, but the fact that most people who watched the trailer for this game a while ago immediately clocked it as a HZD rip-off is telling.

Horizon itself was a rip-off from another franchise, so it's okay for another company to do exactly the same.
Genshin Impact, Palworld, Lord of the Fallen, Starcraft, etc.

it's still better than letting gigantic corporations sue who they feel like. I don't trust sony nearly enough to make this a one-time thing.

If we look at what Nintendo is able to patent its already to late anyway. And tencent is like 5 times bigger than sony, there is no fucking victim in here.

They'd have a good point if:
1) They hadn't asked Sony to license it, and
2) Not changed anything about it after being told no.

It's a fun bit of PR pushback but ultimately in a court of law, intent matters and that's whats going to lead the decision.

It's no secret that a good chunk of the designs in Palworld are, let's say, heavily inspired by Pokemon.

But I think at least the last gif was from a series of tweets that were later confessed to be manipulated in order to make the models look closer.

I don't like Horizon at all but come on……it such on the nose obvious copy.

You have to be blind not to see it.

They are different cases.
Nintendo is not suing for likeness, it's suing for game mechanics.
Sony is not suing for in game likeness either, only for likeness of marketing materials.

I can't believe we are almost a year later and people are still saying this nonsense. The models have absolutely nothing to do with the lawsuit. Nintendo's lawsuit is bullshit as are their, after the fact, patent claims. The only reason they are getting away with this is because the lawsuit is in Japan.

Because suing for likeness isn't going to win them a case, so they were going for another element instead of likeness, while Sony is suing for something that was never them to begin with.

So you admit that it has nothing to do with likeness, which means it can't make their case stronger, so why say it? And the fact that they are pulling these idiotic patent claims just shows what a shitty company they are. This literally would not fly in any country other than Japan and they know it. I hope they lose their asses, because if they win it hurts the entire gaming industry. Some of the shit they are claiming they now own are literally features in games like Final Fantasy and Elden Ring. It's disgusting. Not only should they lose, but should be heavily punished financially. It should make us reexamine patent law, because it's so obviously broken that a company can claim rights, even after the fact, to mechanics that they didn't even invent in the first place and that are used in hundreds of competition products.

Second horizon has some monster hunter mechanics, you need to detach certain specific parts without broken them to upgrade weapons and armours, if sony want, they can push this aspect in the lawsuit to make it look like horizon is partially similar to mh.

That's not gonna stick. On Palworld worked because they used throwing the ball to dispatch pals, the same as Pokemon. That's why they changed it to no throw the ball, but just summon directly the pal.

On Horizon/MH wont work because you have in many other games the mechanic of stripping NPC of they armor to detect weak spots.

This is not about weak spots tho.

To upgrade weapons and armours, you need to collect monster parts, and when you fight them, you have to detach these parts before destroying them with explosive weapons or kill the monster and lose them, you still get some materials by killing the monster but not all you need, very similar to mh where you need to destroy legs, or mouth to get some specific parts, and if you kill the monster before smashing a body part, you get less chance of getting that specific loot.

It is not about doing damage, it is about collecting parts of monsters to upgrade loot, if you ask me that is very similar to mh.

They even share the fact that disabling some monster parts make monsters attack weaker or downright erase a particular move from the monster.

Maybe it's not gonna stick all the same, but you don't really have many AAA games where you strip piece of enemies to upgrade loot, most action rpg where you get materials by killing monsters don't require you to physically detach parts from monsters.

Closest thing is dark souls asking you to cut a tail to get a weapon, but in horizon it is more expanded than that.

Oh come on, all you've got to do is look at the promotional image in the article and watch the video. This is a blatant fucking ripoff. It's fine to be inspired by games, but this is just taking the piss.

WTF I love Tencent now...?!

And while I wouldn't call Horizon derivative (at least when it comes to its universe), it was boring and forgettable as hell. Which, at times is even worse.

Guerilla should just stick to doing Decima and license it out to studios that can actually make something great.
People mostly just hate them for being Chinese.
