Leak Reveals New Details on Halo Combat Evolved Remake: Hybrid Unreal Engine 5 and Blam Engine, Sprint Mechanic, Co-Dev Studio, and More

Because it's not like every Halo game that's had sprint (sans Reach) has underperformed or anything.
I don't think sprint made the games under perform. It's more the fact that 343 have never delivered a complete package.

4 was the closest they got but missed the mark completely with the MP.
5's MP was excellent but the campaign was dog shit.
Infinite had bones but no meat in any mode.

Sprint

Peace Out Goodbye GIF

The hybrid engine using a mix of UE5/Blam! similar to Oblivion remastered
Seems the typical approach of most remasters: they keep the layer of the game logic, gameplay, world etc basically the same but with some adaptations, tweaks changes, and then separatedly use a modern engine for everything related to the assets, rendering etc.

Another Halo 1 Remake? Halo Anniversary wasn't enough?
I assume that engine wasn't ready for PS5 and would have needed a major engine rework to support PS5, to the point it would be faster and cheaper for them to move it to UE5, which pretty likely will be the engine of the future Halo games.

It's insane dude. I could write a book on why it
a. Conflicts with the core game design of halo and
b. Is Microsoft misreading the market
But we've been doing this for 15 years.
Simply put MS and the teams in charge of this franchise since 2010 never understood where the magic was coming from. Nobody under the age of 25 gives a f about halo, I don't understand why they keep trying to appeal to that audience.

I would much rather they double down on the classic arena shooter design even harder instead of trying to blend in sprint and ADS like infinite, but making them so neutered as to be *almost* useless. It feels like it's driven by playtesting with people who don't even buy this franchise.

yup I don't get it either. it's insanity that they still try to go down that route.

for me it's simple.
if the game has a movement ability that at any point lowers your weapon or limits the usability of your weapon,
it's not a Halo game.

if the game makes one direction of movement faster than the others,
it's not a Halo game.

in short:
if I can't make every trick jump in the game while moving backwards or sideways, and while being engaged in combat,
it's not a Halo game.

Trouble is they can't win over Halo players either. Sprint at least makes any new attempt more appealing to potential new players from a broader audience.

The old guard is still thriving on 15 year old content while the latest game can't reel people in with weekly/monthly updates. Sprint does a lot more damage to Halo's original design philosophy than people think. Including it simply turns it into every other shooter on the market. It completely gets rid of all the beautiful little nuances that peak Halo gameplay looks and feels like. It slows down the gameplay, completely wrecks the skill ceiling and also changes map design philosophy entirely.

I actually liked Infinite but it was a shell of what might have been. If they expanded on that with actual proper levels and decent set pieces as well as the "open" world then we'd have a winner.

Shame they'll toss it all out and fuck it up again.
Infinite was a shell due to more than just lack of content.

The game's feel, sound, and even art all felt like a decent copy of Bungie's, but that's it. A cheap copy.

I wouldn't want to see it be the foundation of future Halo projects.

the only time I played Infinite in the last 2 years was when the Halo 3 playlist came online.
no sprint, no clamber, classic maps... it felt like Halo again... it's crazy what difference these small changes make. the game instantly felt more unique and like it had an identity.

play any other playlist and that identity is just gone, and the game feels like something that wants to make everyone happy, and by doing so, makes noone happy.

We'll have to disagree there.

Problem is nobody wants a true Halo game these days, the market and gaming in general has moved on.

The best thing for mainline Halo would be no more Halo, it carries too much baggage.

you can't make that assumption if noone ever tries it.

the only data we have is that as soon as 343i took over the series went into a nosedive, and that classic halo maintains more players than new Halo.

Game took a nose dive with Reach. The retention on that title was awful compared to 3, because it was shit.

If classic Halo gameplay was popular then MCC would have a much higher player base.

Halo Reach was the first game to mess with the Halo formula... so another data point that is in my argument's favour.

also still Halo 4 was such a shit show that Reach overtook it in players after a month or so, and remained ahead until the end.

MCC isn't popular because it's an old ass title that has even older games within it. on top of that it is very convoluted and very off-putting for new players.
imagine being new to Halo and having a matchmaking system that mixes 6 games together, all with different gameplay changes, weapons and mechanics.

noone has tried a true Halo game since 2007... not a single new true Halo has been released since then.

We'll have to disagree on this one.

Its a relic of the past. And I love the game.

it's not a relic whatsoever. it literally has not been tried.
you can't make an assumption like this when not a single developer even tried to test the waters.

what we do know is that nothing 343 tried worked

I simply disagree. Presumably like yourself, I too have been playing Halo forever. System link between couple of Xboxes in adjacent rooms, huddled around the old 28" TVs. 4v4 CTF on sidewinder... those were the days. Years later, I remember -our whole group- being mildly disappointed when they still hadn't implemented sprint in Halo 3 multiplayer (some moved onto CoD:MW, which was a faster game). In Reach we would all pick the sprint class and sprint being permanently added to Halo 4 was the best thing about it. Sprinting makes Halo engagements much more opportunistic and exhilarating, imo. But this is all besides the point anyway, as sprint will never not be in Halo again.

As for the SteamDB comparison, I don't understand it. Are you saying Infinite multiplayer failed because it has sprint?

Sprint I don't mind, but the clamber is kinda a pain in my ass, not so much I want to write a petition, but enough to wish a functional version of normal CE still existed online sure

The original brought new ideas and pushed the fps market in new and interesting ways.

It was called Combat Evolved for a reason.

Audiences expect certain things these days. ADS, Sprint, Clamber, low TTK. remove these and you get Combat Regressed.

There's a reason what you are asking for doesn't exist, it wouldn't sell.

Sprinting and clamber in modern fps are mainstay components of the genre now, they're as established and as expected as only being able to carry two weapons. Games feel downright annoying when ledges cannot be grabbed when intuitively leaping out to them.

Exactly. You try sticking them in a Halo game though and what's left of the player base freaks out.

UE5 has been such a monkey paw game engine. Everything looks great but not a single open world game without stuttering. Seems like a cancer and I'm not sure if we'll ever brute force our way out of it

Counter Strike 2.
no sprint, no clamber, no ADS.

Apex Legends.
high TTK.

it has not been tested. noone knows if it can work or not.
also all these additions aren't improvements on the genre. just differences

Sure you can find element's missing from some titles. But none of those titles play anything like Halo.

You basically want a game that plays exactly like classic Halo, what's the point when that game already exists? Some new maps?

We all have that one shitty opinion brother. Just know you're part of a very, very vocal minority (about 800-1200 people large)

I don't see how you an attribute the difference in player population to the presence of sprinting, when there are a million other differences between Infinite and the classic games. Not to mention, the addition of a classic movement playlist did basically nothing to Infinite's numbers.

I don't want a game that plays like classic Halo, I want a game that follows the original Halo formula.

very simple:

-Equal Starts
-Diverse weapon/item/vehicle sandbox
-Movement that does under no circumstances inhibit your weapon use and vise versa
-Omnidirectional movement
-Coop Campaign ON LAUNCH
-Fully Featured MP at launch (no tricklefeed bullshit)

you can experiment with new things while also adhering to these principles.

Just sounds exactly like Halo to me. What new things would you suggest to fresh things up? Grappling Hook? Equipment?

Im strickly talking about MP here. Campaign is a different story all together.

Sounds very un-Halo like to me.

We had thrusters in 5. Great MP game, just not very traditional Halo.

we had also sprint in Halo 5. and the thrusters in that game felt like ass and lowered your weapon.

trusters that are quick, don't lower your weapons and are fully 360° omnidirectional, would be an ideal addition to Halo to make it more dynamic.

sprint and clamber quite literally make it less dynamic due to locking you into a single direction and locking you out of combat.

Think we'll have to agree to disagree. Both Bungie and 343 deviated from classic Halo and its never worked im not sure why you think adding other mechanics that have been done elsewhere and probably better would make any difference.

Infinite is probably as close as they got to it as it played quite well but they utterly fumbled the execution.

Like i said before Halo is done unless they throw everything out and truly evolve into something new and fresh.

Just my opinion of course

Edit: I've not played it but didn't Splitgate do something like what you are asking for?

Its going to look like this:

So a game with all the soul sucked out of it, with added stutter on top.

Have to wait and see. I can think of more IP worth remaking for the 25th party, but it be on GamePass and will be ok to play through again.

I would rather a remake of Rallisport or Crimson Skies myself

Bungie and 343i deviated by breaking previously established rules.

adding armor abilities broke the equal starts.
Halo 4 broke EVERYTHING.

Halo 5 had the most awful clunky controls. broke omnidirectionality with sprint and clamber. broke lowering your weapon rule with sprint, clamber and Thrusters.
and it had ADS for no reason.

Infinite also violated the lowering weapons and omnidirectionality.

Halo feels unique and different due to the fact that your weapon is always ready and due to the fact that it's completely irrelevant where you look towards, you can still perform every jump, trick jump and evasive manoeuvres.
it makes the way you engage on combat completely different to other games, and it feels unique.

they literally never made a Halo game since 2007 that adhered to these rules set by the original trilogy
