Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Switch 2 vs Wii Direct Comparison

I was refusing to buy this, then somebody posted the peach stained glass window..... must resist...

I think the equalizer comes down to the controller. I have a CRT and 1080 set, so I can play the original versions with the intended sensor bar aim, without feeling the res is bad or spending $70. But I probably won't just because this remake came out, maybe I will when the Galaxy movie hits.

I have never played galaxy 2...... So I might bite at some point.

I would go for it, incidentally it's the one I care more about the motion control, but I'm sure the gyro is good enough. Would suck in handheld mode though.
The Wi remote and nunchuck is just pure perfection for this game. So I am on the fence with this.

it's been that long since i played these games and if im honest i don't think i got round to completing them at the time. so looking forward to this now but since i have other games on the go this is my xmas to myself along with Metroid 4 .

we shall see if i cave and end up playing lol

i wouldn't mind a remake or sequel to the zombiU game i quite enjoyed that at the time, not that its anything related to mario

In Galaxy 1 the aiming is pretty much just collecting starbits, so whatever. But in 2, you also have to use it to join consecutive jumps with Yoshi's tongue. I did it with the first level he appears in an emulator once, it's passable, but of course nothing beats that perfect 1:1 wiimote aim

It's only £49 for the physical copy of Galaxy 1 and 2........... Might bite after all..

After watching the DF comparison vid, looks better in motion than a lot of the stills I've seen. I guess this isn't as much of a rush-job port as I expected.

Still wild to charge $70 for both games, but I'm such a Mario slut I'll probably buy it. I'm part of the problem.

You won't believe me, I was watching the DF video and it was taken down, then I went to the thread to say something about the new video and the thread was taken down. Today isn't my day.

Back from Gamestop to get my digital code for Galaxy 1&2 and walked out with a new Switch 2 and a zipper case to put it in.
I blame Mario for this. Spending money on my lunch break.
Also got a burrito for lunch. Mario will take care of that later on, bring the plunger.

Pick up my copy from Best Buy after work. I am excited to check out the improvements. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are a couple of my all-time favorites. Hate the price, but I fell in line with the other Nintendo sheep.

I'm looking forward to playing through them again.
I saw a Youtube review talking about the price. 2 games for the price of 2. :( Nintendo got me.

Just played for a couple of hours.

I still think Galaxy 2 is the best game ever made. It's obviously a fun discussion and there are so many other incredible games. But it just feels like the absolute zenith of Nintendo. A pure celebration of jumping and movement.

The soundtrack is also God tier.

Played galaxy 2 last night for a few hours when I downloaded it off the Japan Eshop, the motion controls with the switch 2 pro controller are perfect including the shake for spin, seems really accurate and not had to re enter the pointer at all. My physical at £41.99 came in the post today, keeping it sealed for now that have galaxy 2 downloaded and still got the last all stars pack, will look into whether galaxy 1 is worth breaking the seal later, came with a microfiber screen cleaning cloth with some character on it I'm not very familiar with🤷‍♂️
I think they could have done a proper celebration museum mode type thing or something, but probably saving that for the 50th

Played for a couple of hours and these both games just hold up SO well. The controls even work well without wiimote and nunchuck

That these games are 17 years old are just insane - their artstyle even hold up in 4k and looks really good imo

Is the best way to play this docked with the Joycons, or is the new Pro Controller fine?

you are controlling the cursor with the gyro on either. so the only real difference is that you can waggle attack easier with the split joycon config, but that's also just a button now, so I don't think there's much of a difference functionally

Wii-era Nintendo was so good. Such a shame they have gone the full multimedia route and their games have become a lot less dependent on old-school game design and challenging the player. Although to be fair, Mario Galaxy was always way too easy, even to 100% it, but the ideas and level design were so unique.

Got the brand-new Switch 2 all setup transferring the Switch 1 data over. It's gonna take a while to download everything.
Found out the Pro controller for the Switch 1 also works on the Switch 2 for most features including motion control.
Does the Switch 2 pro controller have better motion control? I think it is only lacking the chat button, and you can't turn the Switch 2 on using the switch 1 pro controller.

The gyro tech is definitely a lot better.

You can see some comparison in various games here:

New gyro is better than the gyro in Wii Motion Plus add-on, which was necessary for Skyward Sword, but Galaxy didn't use it. It just relies on the IR pointer to aim at the screen. In those cases, the original hardware is better than any gyro. Probably not as big a deal as a first person game, but it is better.

Agreed. Huge improvement over Switch (1) though, which was the question.

Maybe it is better in the JoyCon 2, but using Pro Controller 2 in SMG (Switch 2 patch applied) it drifts… or in other words I need to reset its position more often than I would like.

I should also try a Pro Controller 1… it might be much worse, but Pro Controller 2 is not immune to drift like that video makes the JoyCon 2 out to be.

Knowing Nintendo, they may have optimised the gyro implementation in the HW or in the game for something held and shaped like the JoyCon2 and it works a lot better with that.

Thanks, I went to Bestbuy this weekend and bought the Switch 2 pro controller and 1 more game, Donkey Kong Bonanza.
Motion does seem to be much better.
How much better for you? I guess I need to try side by side both controller during couch play…

Then again, otherwise it is considerably better than the Pro Controller 1 and you will like the DPad and the new back buttons.

They do a Pro Controller 2 test at around the 7min mark using Splatoon.

Not sure what to tell you, on Super Mario Galaxy 1 I had to reset the gyro several times. It is Not like how he makes it look in his video.

I have seen no other sign the controller would be malfunctioning. When I am actively using it all the time it works well, it does not go off on its own or anything and when I need to steer the Manta in the first special level it steers fine, but as I go through the level I think I am bringing it back to the same position but it is not centred and it is a different mechanism than in Splatoon (they are both Switch 1 games at their core).

Genuinely shocked Nintendo's lazy ass even upgraded the textures, but those differences still aren't worth the price tag.

Are people actually complimenting the work here? This is the cheapest phoned in effort. They probably used AI to upscale the textures. You could play this immaculately on emulator at high res 60fps 5-10 years ago and this is the effort that the mighty Nintendo brings? Lazy.

They also upgraded the number polygons on the models too. That may be an engine setting. I don't know.

One thing I liked about the originals is that they used the Wiimote speaker.

Really, I think this should have been half price as a kind jesture from Nintendo. The price is pretty dickish.

completed both now and they hold up

Galaxy 1 is great but feels a tad dated and has a few boring levels imo. Too much pointer stuff too

Galaxy 2 though - feels totally modern and is just a perfectly designed game. Just amazing and plays great and looks great on S2.
