I finished both games, and for me Silent Hill F is way better. Japan in the '60s, a mix of horror and folklore - absolutely nailed it. Characters and the narrative were great too, and combat wasn't bad at all. Adding the omamori really spices up the fights, especially with five slots.
Even with the fresh setting and folklore elements, F fully captures the spirit of Silent Hill - psychological horror, the protagonist's traumas, and that claustrophobic atmosphere are all there.
IMO Cronos starts strong and really pulls you in, but the further you go, the worse it gets. Enemies and gameplay quickly become repetitive: every area has explosive barrels to easily take out hordes, and boss fights mostly boil down to shooting glowing weak points. After a while, the game stops surprising you. The only real puzzle comes near the end, unlike SH:F, which handled puzzles much better and had way more of them overall. Some were genuinely challenging too; I often had to stop and think for a while, especially on the higher difficulties.
Survival horror? Maybe the first hour. After that, I was running around like Rambo – medkits and ammo everywhere, zero tension. Outside of the final fight, there's basically no real challenge.
To be fair, the soundtrack is fantastic and fits the atmosphere perfectly. Visually, it looks good at times too. I also loved the Eastern Bloc vibe - those Soviet-style apartment blocks (it really felt like visiting my grandma's old neighborhood lol), the hospital, the monastery... The rest of the locations were kinda dull, especially those zero-gravity sections - painfully boring.
My scores:
Cronos 6/10
Silent Hill F 8/10
