Mindseye Developers Write Open Letter to Management w/ Accusations of Mistreatment - "One of the worst launches this decade"

They weren't paid overtime. Read bitch read
They were, cunt. The overtime is converted into PAID TIME OFF and put into an accrual bucket. So they can take off 8 hours, and they will get paid 7 hours of that 8 hours. Understand what TOIL is. The sad thing is, they were not able to use TOIL leading up to the release of the game and after for patching.

Do you live with your parents or something?
No idea how you can be so oblivious to the reality of the cost of living crisis and the relative lack of a safety net in certain places like the USA. Lots of devs have very unspectacular salaries.
^this. Ass of Can was not thinking when he posted.

That's not being paid overtime retardddddd

reading this thread makes me so glad I have always worked for good companies that respected my time (and In return I respect the company and gave them my best). So many bad employers out there, but also so many bad lazy workers. Sometimes I wonder how society keeps functioning.

Sorry i'm excited

The American work ethic brainwashed into some of you in here is absolutely wild.
"I happily work 60 hours with no overtime pay, a weeks vacation a year and no day off in the week LOL U SO WEAK LOOK HOW RICH IM MAKING MY BOSS". Yes I'm being hyperbolic, but still.
Utter insanity, you all deserve a better way of life than that.

From which country are these comments that are laughing at working 48hrs a week like it's normal? I work 40hrs a week and I think it should be 32hrs for an optimal work-life balance.

I would love to not work and get paid.

Reality is this: Working in game-dev is like working in a restaurant kitchen. Most people will put up with shit because a stint under a Michelin-starred chef shows that they can hang under that level of stress and scrutiny.

The problem here is that the Benz thought he was still at Rockstar North, and he was the creative mastermind behind GTA. Wrong, on both counts.

Basically, in the analogy, he was neither the chef he thought he was, and his restaurant didn't have the established rep to make it worth putting up with the bullshit for.

Classic case of a producer having more ego than competence, which has been THE fucking blight on UK dev for literally decades.

You're telling me the diverse, multinational group of developers, dedicated to making an all-new multi-world gaming experience, MindsEye are a bunch of shitlords?

You would be surprised how many game devs we see on Twitter that get laid off complaining about how they can't make rent now. Some do live paycheck to paycheck, but that is not the fault of the company. That is the fault of the person taking a job at a salary that doesn't match their spending habits, or not getting a second or third job. I literally had 4 jobs while in college to help pay rent at our apartment that I shared with roommates.
Thats indie devs and QA testers and whatnot, Mindseye is a major game backed by big money, I have never heard about a big studio like this keeping staff for pennies.

I'm absolutely proud of it because both my jobs provide necessary services. I also work less now than I did when I was in an artistic field 100%.

No entertainment job is worth any overtime at all (since it is, indeed, just entertainment), but if you bring actual value to someone's life, as I said, respect for your work.

i work 4 days a week for 32 hours. from home. i live in .nl and the office is in the uk, so they fly me over 1 time a year to get drunk in London. And i choose to work 4 days/32h , so i can enjoy my life aswell. Doesnt have anything to do with mindseye but i like telling about it.

Haha, nice deal.
I like the idea but I like money (and spending it) too much.

NOOOOO I HAVE TO ACTUALLY WORK AT MY JOB AND AND CAN'T JUST SPEND ALL DAY VIRTUE SIGNALLING ON TWITTER? AAAAA I'M GOING INSAAANE
Dont forget free food, ping pong tournaments in the afternoon, cooking and sewing classes (Bungie had), drycleaning services and any other babysitting freebies gaming or tech bros get on company time and dime.

So what you get are entitled babies. When work gets too tough or the company wants to scrape some perks back to save money (or they feel it's a waste), the employees will complain. Like Bungie employees above about cooking and sewing classes taken away when the financials started hitting the shitter years ago.

It might be unfortunate and scummy but...

It was all for the timeless classic of Mindseye.

All the pain, sweat, and tears for what will be looked back as the pivotal moment in gaming history.

I have never been so moved by the innovation, the quality, and the genre-redefining miracle of that game.

Not to be an ass but I routinely work 45 to 52 hours a week. It's tiring but these guys make it out to be like 90 a week.
If tech people complain about extra hours sitting at a desk, just imagine what would happen if they worked at a job outside needing to slog it out in winter or summer heat.

Or it's a time sensitive job like CSR and repairman needing to respond right away to customers. The avg tech bro is like..... the game is in dev for 5 years and internal tests already show it's shit. Expected to come out in 2025? Nah..... we need more time and budget please. We need till 2027. So for any store or gamer who cares, sorry bud. You got to wait another 2 years while we get paid another 2 years of salary..... "we'll get around to it"

Surely this company is pretty much dead anyway - they're flogging a dead horse.
I think they already laid off a bunch of people. But the rest are still there. They know the company is DOA, so they are trying to publicly position themselves hoping for a big severance package, at the expense of ragging on bosses and the company...... employees hoping to take the money and run.

Similar to other volatile gaming employees. If you're going to go out, might as well go out with a bang.

I sometimes worked 60+ hours/week because sometimes shit just needed to get done asap. And it wasn't in some cushy office environment sitting on herman miller chairs. I swear game dev employees are the biggest whiners of any industry. I'll always laugh when I see statements like in the OP
My grandmother worked 18 hours a day 7 days a week for 10 years to raise her 2 children and she always said we should fight for our rights and a 40h work week because spending time with your family is more important than working as she had small recollection of her fatherless children growing up.

Just because you had to work 60+ hours a week doesn't make their effort any less significant and at the very least they need to get compensated now and not in a promised better future.

And no, things do not need get done asap in the void in SE development. Someone made unrealistic timelines, repeated change requests, bad requirements, promised lies to stakeholders etc.

I am in SW development and i guarantee you a bad developer will get the boot asap. Their studio is located in central Dublin, they do not have a problem finding developers.
A bad manager will hide behind his team, push them over and beyond their limits, won't give the required time to complete tasks.

The state in which Mindseye was released screams bad management for me. It's not a case of insufficient optimization that experienced devs will bring. The game is a mess because of bad calls.

The vast majority of people on salary working extra hours get zero extra pay or time off in lieu.

Not surprisingly, a game company would offer that to keep their whiney employees happy. And they still complain. lol
Maybe they should unionise.

I was always told by my father that he worked super hard 70 hours a week, so that when I grew up, I wouldn't have to. Meanwhile we have gaffers who want others to suffer just as much as they have. What a joke.

Yup.

In finance, everyone has to work extra hours end of month, end of quarter and end of year. You got a formal deadline to tidy up all the numbers and submit to US head office. Then they got a deadline to compile regional numbers and their own US numbers into a total package, add commentary and submit earnings to wall st and the general public. If someone has to work late, weekends or Xmas holidays you got to do it. There's times the dept cant even attend offisite company functions because we cant. Numbers are due.

Every month there's a submission. It's basically circled in everyone's calendar. You just got to do it accurately and on time.

There is ZERO tolerance for quality or timeliness issues. If any company fucks up submitting data making the company tell the world they are delayed or there's accounting irregularities, the stock will probably drop 20% the next day.

But a game dev can always just push off deadlines killing budget and timing. Even pushing it off by years.
