Remedy issues 'profit warning' for FBC: Firebreak: 'Despite improved sales metrics after the update, sales have not reached Remedy’s internal targets'

Remedy's next quarterly financial report is set for October 29, but it's not waiting until then to deliver the bad news. "In its 2025 half-year financial report, Remedy reported that FBC: Firebreak's launch-phase consumer sales underperformed," the studio said in today's update. "After the launch, the company rapidly developed the game based on player feedback and released multiple updates.

"On September 29, Remedy released the first Major Update titled Breakpoint for FBC: Firebreak, which brought significant changes to the game's core experience. Despite improved player and sales metrics after the update, sales have not reached Remedy's internal targets."

As a result of FBC: Firebreak's "weak sales," Remedy will eat a non-cash impairment of €14.9 million—essentially, most of what it cost to develop and distribute the game. And while the studio had previously forecast that its revenues and operating profit (EBIT—earnings before interest and taxes) would increase from the previous year, and more importantly that its operating profit would be positive, it now expects revenues to be up but operating profit "to be negative and below the previous year."

"While we balance future investments to the title, we continue developing and improving the game in line with our updated long-term sales forecast," Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said, which suggests to me that future "major updates" may be dropped. Which would be a shame, but understandable too: I like Control, and I'd really like to see FBC: Firebreak turn things around, but pouring major development resources into an effort for a few dozen people just isn't sustainable over the long run.

For those who care about their games, make sense, don't you think?
I agree, they've made maybe 4 or 5 good games in the last 25 years so its not as if you gotta break the bank to support them.

They're just relegated to making sequels, live service games and remakes now which is what people should actually be worried about.

not sure there's a developer that's gone further up their own ass than remedy right now. between alan wake 2 & firebreak, they seem to've wandered into 'making games for themselves' territory...

As sad as i am saying this, i believe Remedy peaked with Max Payne.
After that their 'narrative' ambitions got over their head, they forgot how to make a fun game.
This game It's out of their wheelhouse..not sure what was the idea..

Yep, Max Payne pretty much carried them all the way to today. Both Alan Wake games can't go without the ultra heavy-handed references to Max Payne.

I bet they had a gigantic sigh of relief when they finally got the IP back into their hands. The remakes are gonna be their best and last chance to make their leaky boat float. It better have the best fucking hard boiled gameplay of all time.

Amazing what Remedy does without giant publisher budgets from MS, 505, Epic.

But no need to worry really. They'll find a way to parlay one of their low selling games using snazzy cinema clips hoping a big company covers it as a wow factor game to promote.

Remedy is a studio that doesn't really need to exist. Since Max Payne 2, they have not made 1 good game in my opinion. Their writers are so poor that it just drags down the game. Their gameplay is not exactly engaging. Hopefully they can close down soon and the programmers can go to better studios.

I don't think it's safe to handover the industry to genzers, I mean even now I could sense their direction, High on Life, you name it.

They should feel lucky imo that both Sony & MS agreed to the deals and gave them money. There wasn't really any hype around this project since it was announced, it's not shocking that the player peaks turned out to be so low.

At least they know now that experimenting with coop & gaas is not what their customers want.

Hope so for Max Payne, although Tps have improved a bunch since then, including the Max Payne they didn't make themselves XD

Yeah. But Remedy is a cheap whore, and made a deal with the devil (Epic).
They could technically buy the publishing rights from Epic, but knowing how vehemently Tim hates Steam, I doubt he's gonna let it go.
Also depends if Epic has even recouped the development costs.

It was a bad idea from the beginning.
I think the idea of the game was interesting, but they should have looked closer at similarly themed games that became more popular, like SCP and Backrooms…maybe even Lethal Company.

The gameplay loop for this title was wrong and they should not have followed Left 4 Dead's. There are other things they could have done in a multiplayer setting of this world.

Everyone could see this was going to bomb, from the day they release the first trailer.
Yet the people in charge of these companies are always surprised when this happens.

Lets hope to god they where able to precur the AI voice rights from Mcgafferys family otherwise its gonna bomb as well.

In this day and age you only have 1 chance. Doesnt matter if the game is much better now or not, nobody gives a shit anymore.
