ROG Xbox Ally X - Reviews Thread

From IGN review:

"When it comes to actual games, though, it was always going to lean in Asus' favor just by virtue of it having a lower resolution display – even if it's a small difference (1080p on the Xbox Ally X vs 1200p on the Legion Go 2). But in Forza Horizon 5, the Lenovo Legion Go 2 only managed 65 fps to Asus' 77. That's an 18% improvement. And in the Cyberpunk 2077 benchmark, the Ally X beats the Legion Go 2 44 fps to 37 fps – another 19% gap."

Why couldn't IGN change the resolution so that Legion Go 2 matched Xbox Ally X?

Still wondering how far it is from the Lenovo Legion Go 2, since its price is way higher.

I understand the love for the Steam Deck but as a Steam Deck owner it is completely outdated, I'm still waiting for Valve to release a newer model but they use to take their time to release any product, so whatever.

By the way, this ROG Ally version is way better than the Steam Deck, there's no contest in here other than preferring a company over other, and just a reminder, this is not a Microsoft product, but an Asus one with MS money for marketing and a custom W11 Gaming Edition image mounted by default.

I need to stop watching videos on the device. I can't spend $1000+ on a toy.

For Xbox being so hated we love to talk about Xbox. 9 threads on the 1st page as of posting.

Xbox Ally (vanilla) with Z2A chip (for $600) is Zen 2 based… same as Steam Deck with basically same performance.

Xbox Ally X is about 50% more performant for 2x the price.

I'm still completely bamboozled someone greenlit the base Xbox Ally.

An absolutely shite decision to go with that chipset. No redeeming features with the RAM and battery life too. Making a product that's weaker than the OG Ally…

This is probably on Asus as much as it is on MS, but really baffling decision indeed.

So if I want a 7.4" OLED screen and Steam OS then somehow that's just me "preferring a company over other". I think that's called "projection".

Is it not? even if it's 50% (probably it will be above that) it is a better device, Valve needs to update the Steam Deck, that's a fact.
Again, are you comparing 2x priced device or actual competitor which is the vanilla Ally?

There is no point in updating the Deck for Valve till UDNA is out circa 2027. We can see that by pricing with these devices.

Nowhere near 2x the price if you baseline on the 1TB Deck for an apples to apples comparison.

And that 50% uplift will - in many cases - be the difference between 'playable' and 'unplayable'.
Again, 2x the price for the uplift. Maybe it's worth it to some folks, but the cost is quite large.

To be fair, 1TB Deck is kind of overpriced.

Still a ways to go, but it's good to see that several challenges are being addressed and they are streamlining the user experience as opposed to just slapping an Xbox sticker on it. That was the promise with MS getting involved in handhelds, so the future of Windows gaming on handheld looks brighter now imo.

now folks that buy a handheld to play at home while having a powerful PC, those I don't understand lol.
Sometimes I don't want to use my PC, especially after a long day at work, and I don't have a lot of time to play during the work week. My Steam Deck and Ally Z1E are perfect for that purpose: gaming for an hour or two before bed, and then all I have to do is power them off and put them away when I'm done.

The weekend is the only instance where I have a good amount of time to full engross myself into a game, thus I have my PC to play said titles at the highest quality I can muster. For short stints at home, and lulls at work, handheld PCs are excellent. Plus, I just like tech, so having a PC, a Switch, handheld PCs, and a Series X, alongside a couple last gen machines isn't odd for me and my personal life.

You'll understand when you have kids.

On topic - 7 inch screen is a dealbreaker for me. So stupid to have a 7 inch IPS in a 1k+ device. Steam Deck OLED is the value king and tbqh strong enough for 95% of games I want to play on a handheld.

I have kids, I don't understand it. I bought a TV and now we have two TV's in the living room. Mine is the actual good TV and the main TV is a basic TCL big screen. When I did have a handheld though it did feel better to play games like HollowKnight on it than my big screen which was surprising. I played Ender Lillies pretty much only on my deck because it just felt better to play on there.

If you needed a handheld PC this one seems like the one to get, this isn't for me but appreciate that it does what it does better than most in that space. The X i mean, not the crappy one.

"In addition to playing Xbox console games..." Yikes.

Though I suppose technically a lot of "Xbox console games" ARE playable on this, as they have PC versions. Just, not all of them.

This thing is pathetically overpriced and while I appreciate hardware if you want to throw your money away and burn it I cannot see the reason to spend this even for the fear of missing out for what they are asking for the high-end. You are way better off getting a gen one she wasn't extreme or an Ally X than this.

And my fears have kind of been confirmed and the performance bump is pathetic in what I expected. And I noticed that at least the linus tech review did not try to put steamos on it to see how that compares in performance. So even if somehow Microsoft made of ground and it performs better the fact is it needs to perform a lot better with a generational leap and for the stupidly expensive price of $1,000.

Yep, and this is why sticking to Steam Deck, OG Ally and alike is the way to go, especially if you get them used.
Same. If you have a PC and are playing locally, you can always stream to your Steam Deck or other portable devices for a better experience.

Shame its going to be a while until we see something really worthwhile for handheld unless you're willing to spend a lot on a Ryzen Al Max+ 385/395 handheld. There's Intel's Panther Lake devices next year which Intel states that should offer 50% more GPU performance but who knows if we'll see MSI or other OEM's make a handheld based on that. Other than that its a long wait for RDNA 5.

I think MSI will make next gen Claw since they seem to have good relationship with Intel.

If it gets 50% performance improvement on the current gen, which seems to be a bit faster vs Z2E chips, that may actually be worthwhile.

We are coming up on the 4th anniversary of the Steam Deck's release in February. It released for half the price of this (even accounting for inflation).

For the amount of time they've been able to cook with this, and for twice the price, I guess I expected much more. From most of the benchmarks I'm seeing, the Ally X (while obviously an improvement over the Steam Deck) is only getting seven to nine frames per second higher in games like Elden Ring. Or 4-5 extra FPS in Borderlands 4. Any non-demanding game like Hades II is a wash because it's playing on both devices at 60fps. Yes some of this comes down to 800p vs 1080p, but a generational leap this is not. In fact, it's feeling more like "Steam Deck Pro". While that's not a bad thing, it's something that makes a purchase hard to justify for those of us with Steam Decks. This doesn't feel like an upgrade I would personally be willing to spend $1,000 on.

And not being able to play your Xbox console game library is a huge loss for the device. I think playing OG Xbox, 360, and Xbox One games natively on this would have made it a much more appealing proposition. Along with the console games that aren't "Play Anywhere". What's even sadder is that surely that was the plan from jump with this device, until someone at Microsoft said "let's just make this run Windows and only let people play the Xbox games they own on PC" and they probably gave him a promotion.

I've literally bought every Xbox thing that's been released since the OG: Xbox, 360, One + Kinect, One S, One X, Series S, and Series X. This is an easy "pass" for me. I can't see this device doing too well at market given the price point.

Yeah hopefully. Intel and MSI did well supporting the Claw 8 Ai. Having significantly better performance will hypothetically, make it the first handheld to really be able to play current games without much compromise. At the moment these handhelds just don't cut the mustard when it comes to new heavy, demanding games. Plus Intel is always improving on XeSS so that going forward to Celestial (XeSS 3) and later architectures should they continue with iGPU/DGPU development; will get better over time.

The 20% upgrade from Z1E to Z2E isn't great tbh. Its totally not worth the upgrade for most current Ally/Legion Go (Z1E) owners. Plus still stuck on RDNA 3, for $1000 in 2025 is just bleh.

Same papi, I had my fun with the PSP back in the day as a portable media machine but I can't see myself doing portable gaming now, either.
Come on don't be negative, handheld gaming is one of two fun things you can do in a bed! 😏

Also, if you dock a handheld it can be an entry point for living room PC gaming. With modding and emulators and all that fun PC stuff. Not sure yet how a Windows handheld is with the new UI but Steam Deck essentially becomes a console when docked.

Just got confirmation that mine has been shipped, perfect timing for The Last Ninja Collection which just went live for backers! 👌

My experience holed up in Bakersfield for 6 months made me see the light on these handhelds. Ordering this as soon as I make it back to the U.S. I should've have just preordered before I left for vacation. Now I gotta wait until December the get one at the soonest.

Dang, if I had a preorder I would've sent it to you.

At least you'll get to enjoy it around the holidays :)

Just buy the open box Ally X that Topher Topher returns to Bestbuy at 40% off list. ...make sure you disinfect it before you use it.
