Why is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is not even in the conversation for Game of the year?

I am talking strictly The Game Awards which ends eligibility period in November, it is actually frustrating to think Indiana Jones is not even in the conversation for a nomination, same thing happened with Smash Bros and it will also happen to Metroid Prime 4, it will be interesting to see what Geoff will do about GTA 6 next year though if it meets its current launch date it will probably not be eligible for next year and he either going to extend the period or what? Skip it and put against Intergalactic in 2027?
 
It released in December. Which means it might as well not exist when it comes to The Game Awards.

Some open world slop will take its place. God forbid games that at least attempt some kind of level design be considered for GOTY.
 
For me? Because it was advertised as a stealth game, but I couldn't find a way to get past the first guard in the first level undetected. Fuck that.
 
Aside from Troy Baker doing an amazing job and some very few nice set pieces, it's the most game I ever gamed. It does nothing interesting, combat was done better many years ago by other games like Chronicles of Riddick, as a puzzle game it's super weak, so whats there to praise? It's corporate safe game, takes 0 risks.
 
I'm a total nutjob of an Indy fan and was dying to play this since it was announced. Was hugely disappointed to learn it was a first person immersive sim but I played and completed it anyway, it was alright. Tbh I was mostly bored. It may have been a big critical darling, but I think that's smoke blowing. Everyone wanted a Naughty Dog style third person action adventure with spectacular set pieces and production values, and that's exactly what it should have been.

Because it has an 86 on metacritic. Which means it's not going to win the TGA's. The lowest metascore for a TGA GOTY winner was 88, the average metascore of the GOTY winner is 93. After all the same outlets that are mostly responsible for the metacritic scores are responsbile for nominating the games for the TGA's also.

It's release date doesn't help, but It's critical reception wasn't high enough to be in with a chance for a win anyway. A token nomination at best.

Hades 2, Clair Obscur, Split Fiction, Hollow Knight & Death Stranding 2 are all the types of games that the TGA's skew towards and Indiana Jones wouldn't stand a chance.

Immersive sim adjacent games are now corporate safe. I didn't get the memo, good to know.
 
It's just a good game that peaks and hasn't anything more to offer after the initial section in the Vatican.
Actually it gets worse with botched gameplay ideas like the boat.
It's good overall but nowhere goty material.

You could play the game "free" on Luna (Prime Gaming) and it was kind of boring, it doesn't have a high enough score to be considered, and it released last year.
 
MS should just stop releasing first/2nd party games in December. Or anything after November 15th.

All major third party publishers should do the same.

It doesn't matter. The keighleys isn't and should never be considered the de facto goty awards.
 
It did nothing new or particularly exciting..?

Apart form great voice acting, what was great? The story - nope, the gfx- nope, the exploration - nope. They were all good, some very good but not great.

They shoudlve taken risks with it. It wouldve had a very high chance to hit with gamers but they went the easy reproducible route.

Name one good thing it excels at. Stealth mechanics? Very subpar. Melee? Serviceable. Shooting? Laughable. Puzzles? Weak. Exploration? Barely decent. It's the jack of all trades master of none and it's corporate safe because they were too afraid to elevate either of the mechanics mentioned. It suffers the same fate as Outlaws, games that want to be immersive sims, but just dont bite the bullet, and take the safe route, mixing a bit of everything just in case someone doesnt get bored of it.

Atrocious gameplay, animations and writing. Not "mediocre" but bottom of the barrel bad.

The game is ok because it has very good graphics and ambience, but the bad aspects are hard to ignore.

Also, the competition is great this year, with three of the contenders at masterpiece level.
 
- High system requirements and expensive to own, most played it on GP
- Not replayable, it's a one-time play game.
- Indiana Jones was popular a decade or two ago, it's not really popular now, especially among the current gen of players.
- Gameplay isn't that good.
- Too many high quality releases which are cheaper to own, are more fun and re-playable and don't need high end hardware.

I feel like most MS games unfortunately fit the above points. They are fun and great but after a few hours you kinda loose interest and because you have not really paid for the game but the subscription, you quit and go back to your comfort game.

Games released after November of the current year are eligible for nomination the following year. Why are you saying Smash wasn't in the conversation when it was among the nominees in 2019?

I feel like it did many things right, but for some reason it just wasn't very captivating. I have played it like 30 times, but I'm not even half way through because it's just not very compelling. Just a tad too slow or too boring for what you would expect of a game like this.
 
Aside from looking incredibly good, it does nothing extraordinary. Actually the combat is very basic. I doubt people would've liked it as much if it was a random non-licensed adventure game. Sure, that's not really fair, but sadly it is the reality.

Level design and exploration was pretty good.

Jack up puzzle difficulty to high, turn off objective markers. It was pretty good after that.

I solved all side quests by simply exploring.
 
It released early in the year and it is hard for a game to maintain relevance for 9 or 10 months.

IT is a really great story. I would give it best story.

I only played it for a few hours, but I found out that everything fell apart almost immediately as I was trying to explore everything by myself, without being told to. And nothing made sense. Entire places you explore with enemies but nothing happens, because you haven't started whatever mission so the required NPC simply isn't there. This happened while exploring some sort of barracks as well as an excavation site. The site was just empty (no one to talk to), still had enemies, but nothing to find.

If you are going to make an open game with liberty of progression that is up to the player, you HAVE TO manage the fact that he is going to do things in whatever order, and still give some sense to it. Like still meeting this guy even if it is too early (or meeting someone else that tells you the guy will be there later), or getting the item and just having it along even if it has no use yet. Here, you are greeted by empty places and people not being there. A world needs to be consistent, otherwise it is a very poor experience.

But I can't stand games being inconsistent so maybe that's me.

I actually liked the game quite a bit, but it didn't have the GOTY vibes, IMO. It was a very solid, very good game that didn't excite.

Also, I think lack of 3rd person option during gameplay and late release last year hurt them. If this was 3rd person and released Q1 this year, it would have had a much better chance even if nothing else changed.
