Questioning the legitimacy of online chatter that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a GOTY game

Its a good game but not GOTY level imo, but who cares really. Way to much emphasis on this forum on games being 'GOTY level', or a game only being very good if it gets a 90+ MC etc.

meh.

Your post history is nothing but shitting on Xbox. Wall to wall trolling in umpteen threads. How are you any different to me? Other than your perceived morale high ground and sense of humour.

Again, stop deflecting, take.some responsibility, stop the whatabout-isms, get that chip of your shoulder, try to exit the cult while you're at it, try to have some self awareness and stop doubling down.

Also : I "shit" on everything that I have thoughts on/bother me, that includes the PS5 Pro, the mediocre as fuck God of war games and Horizon FW, the 59.96Hz stutter that the PS portal had for almost a whole friggin' year (that the fanboys refused to acknowledge) etc etc - not that someone like you would ever understand since being impartial is not one of your strengths apparently.

Gotta say, some.of you have gone full tilt since this company has been going...the way it's going lately.

I dont know what you shit on or dont shit on but people see whhat they want to see

I was browsing X during the downtime and people were complaining about the pro-Sony nature of this site when I see (and post) negative shit about Sony all the time.

*Microsoft games studios after publisher was purchased by parent company.
Pretty sure the game didn't really start production until after MS bought them which was in early 2021 and well after the announcement to purchase them in late 2020. Since the article below in mid 2021 it was still at the very beginning of development.

Didn't bother to buy this game but from what i saw it seems meh at best.
Not a fan of Indiana Jones, hated all the movies i watched including Raiders of the Lost Ark, not a big fan of this type of games the hero is always sarcastic and the villains are super dumb, you have this hollywood type of music where it sounds epic like you are in adventure star wars style and the gameplay is always mediocre and shallow.
I saw some clips and the A.I seems super dumb, stealth is barebones, puzzles are too easy, story is this weird between over the top sarcasm and some serious drama, everyone sounds obnoxious and the game feels in constant conflict within itself whether it wants to be a full fledged action/adventure or a stealth game or an immersive sim and it does nothing well.

But thats just my first impression, again didn't bother to buy it, but yeah for me i'd never consider this type of a game GOTY.

It was announced in January, acquisition wasn't complete until March.

GotY Contenders so far for me? Easy. Blue Prince (one of the best multiplayer games I've ever played - with my missus), and Expedition 33 (which still has some jank, but it's all part of it's AA charm).
I am yet to play Blue Prince yet but will dive in once I get through Clair Obscur which so far is easily my game of this year! In fact, it's better than anything I played last year as well!

Yeah, the Indy movies are an homage to the Saturday cereals of the 1930/40s. So they are going to be a bit corny. Basically Indiana Jones movies are the 1980s versions of those type of those type of action/adventure movies remade.

I liked it quite a bit, but I absolutely love the OG trilogy far above stuff like Star Wars. I am going to double dip when it goes on sale on PS5 and will definitely play a sequel. It was probably my personal GOTY last year but that is mostly because I barely played any new releases last year.

@Judge Death

What isn't clear there? That isn't saying those who liked the game are wrong.

And to clarify too, what I meant is literally that: is this the only game you played? Or was there something else that made this really stand out?

I even said I'll end up finishing it and thought the story was great (some might even say that alone is goty but whatever lol). I don't see how from a gameplay standpoint, this is a GOTY. Then again, I also found God of War 2019 to be very boring and only ever heard how great the graphics/story was. I'm just not that kind of gamer. I want a total package. But for others, just tell me why. More curious how it could be.

I didn't mean that it became a Microsoft gs game after or before purchase. I mean it was never and is not an "xbox" game.

It was a playable, enjoyable game, GoTY it was not however.

It suffered from some poor game design elements similar to Youngbloods.

They should have kept it entirely linear, The semi-open world side filler was pretty bad, take 5 photos of random fountains for example.

When the game does kick into linear set-piece gameplay, it's pretty great.

Game looks like an interactive movie. Not sure where the fun is. Throwing triple A money at something like this sure is something. Bombed hard in normal sales too.

so you basically haven't seen a single minute of gameplay is what you're saying there... because this couldn't be further from the truth

It's not a bad game by any means but yea it's firmly below most of the Uncharted games. Shame that Naughty Dog refuses to remaster/remake Uncharted 2 so that more people can experience the best Indiana Jones-esque videogame to date.

*Me as a 28 year old, actively enjoying the game, despite having not watched a single Indiana Jones film.*

Interesting notion, friend.
There's always outliers man. How many of your classmates have ever since an Indy movie?

I think the Indy IP actually cost this game sales vs the same effort from Machine Games with a new IP. The same can be said for a lot of Star Wars games coming out. The Respawn ones especially would do better as a fresh IP with the same budget and general design doc.

Fantastic game. Loved its imsim-lite take on gameplay. I can imagine PlayStation only gamers, used to barely interactive movies with characters shouting out and narrating what you should be doing at all times, to be overwhelmed by this game and find it bad though.

The game is beautiful, the story is good and I love Indy.
The gameplay is such a pain i stopped after the snow area asking myself why I inflicted this to myself.

I thought exactly the same too - looking extremely linear, extremely limited. I was ready for the game to be complete ass based on the trailers, frankly. A bad first person movie. That's a massive blunder in their marketing. The game is actually extremely open, basically an Indiana Jones immersive sim. Despite what the trailers might show you, it actually falls inline with the interactivity and puzzle solving of Fate of Atlantis. It's really that good. Whoever came up with the marketing should honestly be fired because they killed this game. Check my post history - I was shitting on the game before it launched, but I'm happy to eat crow when I'm wrong. And I was wrong about The Great Circle.

Presuming we're counting The Great Circle for 2025 GOTY because it launched in December of 2024, I'd say it was absolutely a real contender for GOTY... but the Oblivion Remaster and Expedition 33 have launched since then. They're both absolutely incredible. Against those titles, I'm not sure I'd say The Great Circle is gonna make GOTY. It's a great game, well worth playing, but it's not the best game.

its horrible in combat and stealth, mediocre in platforming and puzzles. has somewhat enjoyable metroidvania levels and narrative. simple as that.
overall slightly above average experience, which of course makes it goty for green-rats with the quality they are used to getting from first party

It's a somewhat immersive sim set in the Indiana Jones world.
If you don't like immersive sims (most don't I guess) then you won't like this. If you do like immesive sims then a lite version is still going to be a really great game and maybe your favorite game of the year.

I'll happily choose the immersive experience I had with Indiana vs Astro Bot. Both were fun but nothing beats being locked into a world that you don't want to leave until you've done everything.

I thought everything about this game was excellent. Only weak part was the enemy a.i. I was OK with the combat, reg fps gunplay would've made the game super easy and Indy isn't rambo. The melee was great they nailed cheesy 80s movie hand to hand combat.

Which is why they are good. Dumb fun is still fun. Not everything needs to be high art.

C'mon. Not everything needs to be a fucking diss on a fanbase. This thread is like a fucking middle school recess.

What a load of bullshit. Sony fans take the piss out of Concord and the new Bungie one. Took the piss out of the launch game, forgot what it was, with the cars. If a game looks shit, I would say so.

I'm not saying it's a bad game or anything, haven't played it and it's rated pretty well in reviews and WoM. It really could be peoples GOTY. But when you have the same group saying any old shit like Redfall is as well? I sense a pattern.

lol thats what exactly your sidekick in this game does though, constantly spoiling already elementary level puzzles.

I thought it was great and better than most of what I played last year (I played on PC). Got all the achievements too.

As a huge Indy fan and cinephile it was pretty much the perfect Indy game for me. I thought I'd have preferred it to be more like Uncharted but the Immersive Sim/First Person Puzzle aspect worked perfectly and really made it feel like I was Indiana Jones. Add in the fantastic voice acting and cutscenes and it pretty much was the best Indiana Jones has been since The Last Crusade.

I could see the combat wearing thin if that's how you approached every single obstacle the game puts in front of you but for me I had no issues with it at all. It was actually refreshing to play a polished AAA single player title that focused on things other than combat.

Really can't wait for the DLC and to see if we get future Indy games after playing it.

I'm incredibly open to another Indy game, but not this gen. They should try their hand at something else before revisiting the IP.

There is a tendency to label every exclusive GOTY on these boards. This happens with every game including Nintendo games so i dont pay too much attention to it.

The game is simply boring and it should be an insult to all indy fans to make a boring indy game. The developers shouldve been blasted for making a first person immersive sim instead of an action adventure game. The whole thing is wrong and everyone responsible for this is literally retarded. Imagine if Insomniac took the spiderman license and made it a first person immersive sim. People would laugh and mock them until the publisher cancelled the game which is what shouldve happened here.

Arkhane is making Blade. Watch them turn it into a first person immersive sim too.
I'm I the only one who thinks this is a misuse of MS's $70B+ resources?

I'm currently half done with the game and I just don't get why it's not a third person game. It's so clunky to punch precisely.
