VGC: Fallout 3 Remastered is in Development

I really hope this is true. Fallout 3 is amazing but it's really tough to play nowadays with how dated the visuals are.

Also hope it's not far off. A release before, during, or right after season 2 of the Fallout TV series would be awesome.

This has reportedly been in development for a while, it was first mentioned in the same breath as the Oblivion remaster in the Zenimax docs circa 2022.

Let's see how far this is. I was hoping they would have announced it and have it ready by the time of the show's second season, but it looks like that ain't happening :(

When I think FO3, Grey, Green, and Brown comes to mind. Hopefully they add a few more colors.

Bro .. you *know* there will be a very loud vocal minority complaining about it here if they see a single color more than the original's color palette.

Well, Oblivion was a shadow drop and Todd Howard just said it was a success and they'd like to replicate that. So the idea of a Fallout 3 "out now" announcement isn't crazy.

Maybe The Game Awards...

"Similar to this year's The Elder Scrolls Oblivion: Remastered"? So another UE5 remake running on top of Gamebryo?

I can smell the stuttering from here.

It still blows my mind that we got Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Skyrim in the span of 5.5 years. A new open-world Bethesda/Obsidian game every 15 months or so.

But honestly, Fallout 3 is really begging for a remaster. It was a GREAT game in 2008, but it has not aged well. It's ugly as hell and doesn't really play on modern PCs without serious modding. Plus, only being able to properly shoot via VATS is annoying.

I loved it in 2008 and it's been long enough since I played it that it would be like a totally new experience for me. Especially with newly updated visuals. I just hope they give it a little more visual flavor than the Oblivion remake, which looks so bland and is devoid of any art direction.

It's an ok fallout game, not the best in the series. The sense of desolation is strong in that game.

I would have proffered New Vegas. Maybe after Fallout 3 remake, they can asset flip the New Vegas remake.

Gamebryo magic for ya. It's basically the "same game" with a skin over it. nop, Skyrim was already on CE

They are probably going for the UE5 graphics with gamebryo running under it again.

I replayed it sometime during COVID BC on my S and thought it ran and looked great still to me. Bought some of the DLC as well. I think it holds wonderfully and have always preferred it to 4 and even NV.

I too hope they keep that original color palette as well. Something about all those browns and greys and black just gives it that certain tone and character (not to mention the nostalgia rush).

Fuck I love it. Have the lunchbox and bobblehead still too. Definitely would be another situation where I'd fake sick and jet out of work the moment it was announced (if they dropped it just like Oblivion).

Where does GAF stand on the rumors that this is gonna be shadowdropped at the end of the tv show season that have been popping up all week? I feel like this game has been rumored forever now. GIVE IT TO MEEEEEE

Let's hope it's not as badly optimized as Oblivion.
I think if they can avoid it getting a reputation of it being a stuttery mess it will do very well.

F3 was my first Beth game, and it drew me in with its world building and choices. YouTube essays and RP purists made it cool to hate F3, but it was excellent fun with so much explore. The Liam Neeson led main story was little more than a side story in the end. Everything else was the main draw for me. If we can get that again with QOL and other improvements I'll be tempted to make a rare full price purchase.

Oblivion played great on the consoles, but Unreal 5 doesn't play nice on Steam Deck. I'll probably play it on consoles, but I would love to have it on Switch 2.

I've been replaying FO3 and NV before bed almost every night since I got my Steam Deck over a month ago, I'm approaching 3k hours combined since FO3 and NV 1st came out. It's pretty safe to say that these two games are my favorite of all time. The gameplay loop never gets old, for me.

Please, please, please, Bethesda, don't fuck up the remasters...

I'm replaying it right now and I freaking love the atmosphere. It's way, way better than the boring yellow of the Mojave in New Vegas.

So hopefuly they wont fuck it up

There are rumors we're getting both, it's just a question of which drops first and when. I guess play the waiting game at this point.
Getting a graphical remaster +gameplay update for both New Vegas and F3 while at the same time only getting Oblivion but not Skyrim...would be quite the interesting decision made by MS/Bethesda.

Virtuous is definitely going to change the color scheme based on their previous 2 releases. However they'll probably toss in a green tint option post-release.

Almost zero chance. With the Oblivion Remastered, we have rumblings of it's arrival that eventuated with Virtuous updating their website ahead of schedule, leaking the first images. As of right now, we're not seeing those rumblings for Fallout 3. It's just blind speculation as to what people think will happen. In all likely hood, purposely dropping it after the show is done doesn't make much sense in terms of how these trends generally go. Launching it alongside the show - like with the recent Avatar DLC - is what drives the synergy.

Should have been New Vegas.
We're getting both, though community rumours suggest Fallout 3 is intended to launch first.

Boy, I pray this shadowdrops like Oblivion did next month. That was such an exciting reveal and it ended up being one of the best remakes I've ever played. Can't wait to play Fallout 3 again!

A beloved industry titan and lover of beans had this to say:
Article:
Some have been wondering if a mysterious countdown on the Fallout TV show's Amazon Prime website is hinting at a shadow drop for a new Fallout game or remaster. I'm told this is not the case. However, we are eventually getting a Fallout 3 remake in the vein of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, as well as Fallout New Vegas on top.
