Do you have a ‘go to’ game?

Something that you just default to in the evenings?

In the past I've had a pretty strong rotation; Rocket League, Halo MCC, Gears 5, eFootball/FIFA. I'm bored or Rocket League now and don't own an Xbox anymore so I've gone from having some pretty safe comfort food games to practically none.

Medieval 2 Total War.

19 years old and it is still my favourite game ever made. I even have the Android version, which is actually smoother than the PC original.

I pray they release a remaster like they did with Rome. 20th anniversary next year would be the perfect time to do it.

It used to be Path of Exile - I have over 1,500 hours in that game, but I've skipped the past few leagues because I can't bring myself to play the campaign yet again. It's just so monotonous at this point.

Trying to actually play through my backlog, so I don't really have a "go to" game right now

As of late, those have been DOOM, Quake and Sega Rally

Crypt of the Necrodancer. I try to get in at least 3 runs daily at the start of a gaming session to stay sharp. The levels are procedurally generated so it feels fresh everytime, I liken it to someone doing their daily brain teaser or crossword puzzle.

Once I'm warmed up in that game, pretty much any other game I start feels easy.

Borderline heresy here. What do you incorrectly believe the best is?

It was just more epic. It wasn't just the better graphics, but it had bigger maps, bigger unit sizes, an insane number of units, defense options, nukes, anti-nuke missiles, defense cannons that could launch base destroying payloads half way across the map, flying units that you can customise the patrol paths, naval battles, submarines........

And the Krogoth "death" unit.

The fact that this game has never had a remaster is a crime against humanity.

For the last few years it has tended to be some kind of rogue-lite, because they're fun to replay, carry forward some progress, and they fit into any time session.

Historically it's been Dead Cells, Slay the Spire, Heat Signature, Noita, Risk of Rain 2, Rogue Legacy 2.

Lately, it's been The Rogue Prince of Persia, Windblown (early access, Dead Cells devs), and also throw in Ball X Pit.

With friends, Call of Duty and lately, Battlefield 6.

On my own, my desert island/go-to game has become XCOM 1 and 2. But I'm usually cycling through old games I enjoy or new ones as they release.

World of Warcraft. I'm enjoying it again now, but for years I just played it as something to do and would stop when a new game came out. Finish that, maybe some others, then just find my way back to it.

Days Gone. I'm on my 4th playthrough and I will probably play through it many more times. I grew up in the PNW, but moved away. So the setting is very nostalgic for me. I also find post-apocalyptic games to be comforting for some reason. It's a perfect combination.

No. I never switch between multiple games either. I slam one until it's finished (or until I nope out) and then 99% of the time never touch it again.

It was WoW, then Destiny 2.

I can barely play either for more than 5 minutes now: both so tired.

Missing that go-to-game is the main reason I'm drifting away from gaming.

How's Helldivers holding up? I checked out the Steam reviews yesterday and it's getting panned in the 'recent reviews'.

Fine imo. I actually just checked the Steam reviews in response. The most common issue I see is performance issues so bad people can't even run the game, and I don't know what to say: I haven't had a problem (on my <year old, brand new PC). Helldivers has always had performance issues, usually stupid bugs of some kind or another, but right now it's in a relatively stable state. Supposedly Arrowhead's slowed down content releases to address them.

If the game's usually run fine for you, I'd say my biggest criticism right now is the lack of new content. I have no clue when even the next warbond is coming (and have accumulated a treasure trove of super credits in the interim). Second biggest criticism is that they still haven't fixed city POIs to even be able to show as completed. This seems like it should be really basic considering the game already tracks POI investigations perfectly in other biomes, but I have no clue what's going on in the spaghetti code for this game.

Monster Hunter. I even bought an expensive as hell tablet so I can play portable MH Wilds without lugging along a heavy gaming laptop. First trip with it is going to be over Thanksgiving break.

Nice choice. SupCom eventually overtook it for me (mostly because the variety of having 3 factions is nice). I'm also one of the people that actually enjoyed Planetary Annihilation. I've still yet to try out BAR.

SupCom was great. Yes, TA does suffer from just the two factions. Both the Core and Arm are also very similar as well. TA however holds a special, nostalgic place in my heart.

Speaking of SupCom and TA, how do they handle on modern systems? Do they play well on the Steam Deck? TA plays fine on my crusty laptop, but I'm thinking of the Steam Machine and would love to be able to play both SupCom and TA on it.

Not sure about SupCom but my GOG version of TA works fine on most anything. SupCom probably works using the FAF client.

Rotates between Elder Scroll/Fallout/Hearthstone/WoW/Warcraft Reforge. I'll spend months on one of them and switch over to another for a few months.

Warcraft Reforged has been my go to game for the past few months either editing stuff with the world editor, or playing custom campaigns. With some WoW here and there.

Star Citizen. Despite all the frustrating bugs, the game is pretty chill to wind down with and take a spaceship out for a 'Sunday drive' every now and then.

I'm currently hooked on playing Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on my SNES through a CRT TV using an sd2snes. On days when I'm lazy, I switch to some shoot 'em ups instead.

MS Flight Simulator (it's been decades, this is the king of my gaming hobby... the only non-chill part of it is all the labor involved with gearing up with VR, yokes, throttles, rudders and shit)
Gray Zone Warfare (my new shiny goto, 400+ hours just in a few months now...)
Star Citizen (It's a surprisingly chill game)
Pinball FX (I actually have all the tables for it)
COD (Zombies and Resurgence for chill)

MMOs, specifically Elder Scrolls Online.

The game is just beyond massive, maybe bigger than all other Elder Scrolls games combined aside from Daggerfall, which is why I try not to play it too much as it takes away from other game time.

I'm currently at level 217.
