Chris Dring: Sales of Xbox consoles were down 39% in the UK during 2025, making it comfortably the worst year on record for Xbox consoles.

Worst year so far

Does anyone REALLY think Nadalla, Phil and Sarah give a dam? Doubt it.....Someone should ask all 3 of them, seeing these sales figures, what makes them think their next console will do better than these figures? What have they got that the competition doesn't...

The return of favourite xbox franchises and their debut on playstation. Things might not improve this year.
They're done with console exclusives. All they care about is revenue growth after Bethesda and Activision.

They should put GamePass on Switch 2 at this point.

I think the real question at this point is: Does it actually make sense for Microsoft to launch a new Xbox branded device in a year or three? Before all this crazy shit with the hardware prices, it seemed like a sketchy idea. Now, I think it seems unlikely. They can't just let the brand die, and then try to revive it with this console/PC hybrid that's likely to be high priced in a couple of years. That's not a strategy.

Pushing the Xbox PC store is a non-starter. If Epic can't make a dent in the market with one of the biggest most popular games and also giving away free games for years, Microsoft has less than zero chance just encouraging people to sign up for PC game pass.

So does Microsoft Game Studios just get rebranded to Xbox and they're fully a third party publisher a'la SEGA after the Dreamcast? I'm having a hard time seeing how their future is anything but that...

They 100% give a damn but can't admit it publicly.

They can yap all day about MAUs and miles driven in a Forza game, but the cold harsh reality is without console sales they're fucked.

People still need reminding that Microsoft is a SOFTWARE company. Always was.

Most didn't say so when they launched TWO consoles at the same time 5 years ago to spend Sony out of business via GamePass and buying publishers for 80 billion dollars

Now that they failed, the music changed....

How convenient

Xbox 2025 was almost like Nintendo 2016.

It was a blanck year with pathetic sales across the board.

The difference is that at least Nintendo ended 2016 with hope for the futur.

For Microsoft there is nothing that put confidence and that's terrible.
At least if a new hardware was anonced with an original vision, why not ?
But currently we barrelly have any concrete view beside a new Forza confirmed for this year...

Also Nintendo 2016 was a bit saved by Pokemon meanwhile Microsoft have the worst selling COD in ages in addition to it's underperforming console ecosystem.

As long as they have a job, they won't care.

Which after ruining the Xbox brand, none of them should have a job.

Not surprising.
Do we ever get any data from Mexico? IIRC outside of US/Canada the UK and Mexico were the next biggest markets right? I might be mistaken.

God it must suck to be an Xbox fan.
It probably really sucks for a lot of Xbox fans that came from the SEGA camp. They're gonna get some deja vu soon.

Cool seeing you back on here Giga.

And I totally agree

MS is WAAY wrose than Nitenndo in that regard... Nintendo had and have franchises that always bring money like Pokemon (like you said), Mario and Zelda. Specially Pokemon, i was 'in denial' when i discovered that pokemons brings more money than Marvel...

MS, in that regard, has ZERO franchises that you know will bring money and sustain a business.

As I said in the older bumped thread:

Why would they? They're all going to other more preferred platforms for gamers and the price of their boxes are to now condition you for their more expensive box that's coming.

We are saying that 2 years after Microsoft brought one of the 3 biggest 3rd party publisher in the world.
Yes, I am saying exactly that. Do you really believe Call of Duty, at this stage, will sustain xbox as console business? Or any bethesda game for that matter after Starfield (im suspicious on that, i never liked bethesda games, so...)?

"making it comfortably the worst year on record for Xbox consoles"

Or the best. When the consoles sales don't matter and clearly Is an obsolete business model, selling the worst is actually the most successful strategy........right?

Not even as a console business, the entire gaming division is living on borrowed time.

Perhaps if they scale down the cost of the Xbox PC hybrid and make it a supplemental piece of hardware to the GamePass experience if they offer it across storefronts... It could be a companion piece or even alternative form of gaming for the more casual crowd? I don't know, I'm just spitballing. (I ditched Xbox when they announced the One, despite loving my 360.)

You make many fair points and raise excellent questions about the brand moving forward. I agree with your point that they are still sitting on a brand that has viability in its industry and it doesn't have to nor should it die; but they haven't truly capitalized on their attempts at whatever digital cross-brand strategy they have. Is it it simply taking too long to implement? I don't think so; I think the Xbox division is run by a bunch of rich dudebro fratboys who inherited Daddy's wealth and decided to try their hand at gaming. They just simply haven't known what to do with the brand since the 360. Blame Mattrick and everything from there. Add in Sony and Nintendo's stodgy antics and I'm amazed we've seen Xbox exclusives at all. I do not think the market will bear a premium hybrid at the prices that power and convenience would command. Where does Xbox go from here?

No data from Mexico. In NA (Canada, US, Mexico) PlayStation has been #1 for over a decade now.

If they're still taking a huge loss on their hardware, then selling hardware actually creates a bigger loss for them to overcome. Since they have to achieve profitability to fuel Nadella's AI addiction, selling less hardware makes them more money. Welcome to corporate accounting.

If their goal is to achieve long term profitability, their immediate goal should be to sell as few new Xboxes as possible to minimise hardware losses. Then, they need to sell as many games on other platforms as possible to make up for the loss of sales on their own hardware platforms, while working to get new, profitable hardware to market to rebuild their exclusive platform as profitable venture, which will stabilise their P&L statements. Lastly, they need to extract as much money from every aspect of their business as possible to minimise the pressure on these key fronts. No Christmas parties, no employee perks, no customer "thank yous". A ruthlessly efficient business that does one thing: wring as much money out of every customer you have.

Unfortunately, key hardware components just doubled in price, and the market is buying up hardware orders literally years in advance. Getting new hardware to market may not even be possible anymore.

The whole point with PC hybrid is that MS has washed their hands on the production and sale of console hardware to someone else. Even if it fail the loss would be minimal.

As for Xbox Series... I don't see any point for them to make any more hardware, especially since the price of the parts went up. I have been suspecting that the sales decay means MS had enough stock of Series X for the rest of its lifetime.

They're going to go timed exclusive on a few of their releases most likely. Doubt anybody is going to buy a Series X because of it though with how dead it's looking. They might try with the next xbox instead depending on when it releases.

Spinning in their graves
This makes it sound like Peter Moore and J Allard died 😄. They're still alive.

It's a pretty gloomy outlook for hardware, but on the flip-side they are bringing VR to FS24 this year, so my personal estimation of Xbox is only going up. It's the one of the few things I'm genuinely excited for in 2026.

Yeah but I remember Mexico having a bigger Xbox fanbase then say Europe where PS is sometimes 10x Xbox and Japan where Xbox might as well not even exist.
I believe there was rampant piracy with the 360s which helped with demand. Much easier to burn DVDs and mod the consoles. PS3 with blu ray was much harder.
