I'll be first to admit I was way too harsh on this game on launch, and more so on my overall rating of what I played.

A lot of that had to do with:
-Not knowing it was more of a melee game
-Glen calling it AAAA
-The shimmy sections
-Performance issues at launch

I've been going back through it now on ps5 pro, and I have 0 issues with it. My major gripe is I wish it had more bosses, and had learned more from dead space.

All of its core issues are minor and fixable with a sequel. One which we will never get. I think as a third person survival horror fan, and any other fans out there of the genre, we kind of fucked ourselves by being overly negative on this one.

Glen likely will never rear his head again, and while he's a semi douche, he did build a great game with some talent.

I mean, this is still the best facial tech out there to date isn't it?

Second playthrough id raise my 6/10 to an 8/10 here.

RIP the franchise before it could even take off.

One of the greatest visual of the last gen, easily.

Played it on pc and it was a breeze (not on launch, though).

First playthrough is a melee game.

NG+ is basically Resident Evil 4 / Dead Space, game is a complete 3rd person shooter, no melee ever needs to be used.
I do not see myself replaying it ever again. I did not enjoy the journey in the first place. I can take only so much crawling and squeezing between sewer pipes. It is too long and automated. If it started with snow section I might see differently but I do not want to crawl through shit again just to get to a moderately entertaining section. The setting for most of the game just sucks.

Bumping this because I just finished the main story- 9/10 for me. I want more!

Loved Dead Space and really enjoyed this. No open world, proper gore, acting and models top notch, great environment and fun melee action.

Thanks PS Plus for this. Too bad they won't make another.

Cronos is your next stop when you need another banger!

The game was too lineair to my taste. There was no real exploration, every door was locked except the one leading to the hallway you were supposed to go through.

It had potential for sure.

I snagged this when Epic gave it away for free a few days ago. First time I had ever heard of it. I'm a few hours in and I got to say so far it has been a fun experience. The graphics look amazing and are definitely better than a lot of games released today. I got everything maxed out with RT on. I've really enjoyed the gameplay. The only gripe I have so far is the default HDR settings was/is terribly washed out. But I was able to fix that with the sliders in the menu. I was hoping there was a Renodx mod, but unfortunately there isn't.

It has a lot going for it. The visuals, the audio, the atmosphere.

But that combat is just so dang bad man. I can't.
If you take the time to practice the combat, it's way more easier, even if multiple enemies are on you. Just takes time to practice and sort of memorize positions so you know how to react on the fly. I used to be annoyed by the combat, but I just took 20-30 minutes to get familiarized with it and how things generally work. I think it plays a little better than Dead Space when facing enemies up close. There is more to do than just shoot, swing and stomp. If you get the dodging down to a T you can slip out of some dicey situations, too.

I am trying to play this on steamdeck via epic store version but no buttons responsive. It thinks I'm on a keyboard for some reason. Putting steam input in control settings does nothing. Either does selecting different proton versions. Anyone have any idea how I can get this working?

I agree, and I even played it at launch. I think it was very harshly criticized. I didn't go in expecting Dead Space. I also went in fairly blind because I love horror games and didn't want any spoilers. I thought the combat flow was fun, and it gets better after some upgrades. I was pretty confused after seeing all the negativity surrounding the game. I thought it was pretty good! Definitely recommend to anyone who likes horror games.

I like horror games and Calisto Protocol is shit. The combat is the most stupid thing. Unlogical and unnatural. The story makes no sense from the start. Tried to like it but rather drop a hammer on my toes than play this again. I feel stupid for grabbing Calisto when it was free and glad I didn't spend 5 eu on it when it was dumped at my local store.
Play Cronos The New Dawn instead.

Playing this again on my PS5 Pro. In RT mode it looks amazing. One of the best looking games this gen by far IMO. The asset quality, lighting, color palate, design etc.

Im playing it on dissmemberment mode just to get the spectacle.

Gameplay wise I think it suffers from many flaws on a fundamental level.

They seemed to have gone for "looking cimematic" over "feels good to play". The camera being so close, the fov, the slow way the camera pans when looking around. It does look good but it makes interacting with the game somewhat of a constant chore.

The melee is just hold stick in one direction until enemy hits, change direction, hit him 1 time, 2 times if he only have one arm - repeat. Sometimes that cross hair comes up and you can shoot him for bonus damage. But its just press button - watch animation with no real agency. It looks really cool but thats not how we interact with games, they´re different from movies.

The jump scares reflect this to. Sometimes a monster bangs on a window or something, but theres never the "oh shit, I will have to fight this thing later!". Its just a visual effect.
There are alot of ambient scary noises, but since they are just ambient you dont think "this thing crawling in the vent will jump out behind me, I better pay attention".

Then there are all the litte things that add up: too little space in inventory, healing taking too long, the shimying through tight spaces, changing weapons work really badly, etc. And the heads that bite you or the snails in boxes. You have no agency, like wtf?

Navigating and level design is just off. I have no idea where Im going. Is this door to the main objective or a detour? If I jump down this chasm will I find some extra loot or is this the main path and will lock me out from going back?

Amazing production values, but could have been so much better.

I'm definitely enjoying my replay of this with my upgraded rig. It could definitely use some more monster/enemy types, which I believe was a major thing that was cut due to time.

I played it almost a year after launch and I enjoyed every single moment of the game. It's looked fantastic. I enjoyed it more than Dead Space Remake

Played some more. God damn this game is awful besides the production values.

I got to the place where "start the engine so cogs starts turning and fight off enemy swarm". Your FOV is so narrow, the camera soo close, you turn soooo slow so you arent really playing a game. A couple of times an enemy was just next to me and hit me, theres no way to play to avoid that, its just luck.

Compare this to the combat in RE4, its like light years apart.

Then there´s the part with like three biting heads in a row. There´s nothing you can do. Anoying music cue - tap triange - lose health. Repeat. Who the f**k thought this was a good idea??

I also met the first robot again. A text prompt instructs me to shoot the robot in the head. I died on my first playthrough when the game was new. But ok, Im playing on dismemberment mode, I have the skunk gun. Might be fun to shoot the robot in the head. Try skunk gun. Fire two shots, robot kills me. I test my normal gun. Robot kills me again. Why would the game give me instructions that doesnt work? Amazing.
Also its not like the robot fires and you can like move behind a crate or something. No, it just switches to an animation of the robot killing me. Just like everything else theres no real gameplay, just precanned stuff.

Another little anoying thing. My run command just stopped working randomly. I realised next to the cocoons there are these little puddles of goo, and if you touch them ever so slightly you stop running. And you have to press run again after you´ve left the little puddle. Its not like the animation changes to show he´s slogging thru goo, no. Just switches to normal walk. Im glad they did this. The game is so much better when you stop walking if youre near one of those little puddles. I cant image if he could just run over small puddles, would break the game.

Dead space 1 and 2 were awesome.
