Crimson Desert Combat Overview

Damn! Rockstar has a hard decision to make, delay GTA6 to next year or risk getting embarrassed when they lose GOTY to Crimson Desserts

Unfortunately TGAs are a popularity contest and most websites/journos will vote for GTA.
I dont see GTA losing a popularity vote for GOTY, though im sure a bunch of websites will still give it to Crimson Desert.

But unless I get another deep dive on GTA this game looks borderline fake.
Like if someone was to describe the game to me id say that just sounds like some kids wild idea for a game.
Meanwhile looking at it.....im like damn I might actually skip GTA this year to play this instead.

<--------Skipping GTA this year cuz he is PC only.....but let him have his small victories.

Combat may not be incredibly deep mechanically but looks visceral as hell.
It actually is mechanically deep, and if you check out some recent interviews about it, they actually had to tone down the complicated controls a bit from last summer's demo because mainly FGC-types like Maximillian were able to fully utilize them correctly, while other outlets considered it a negative.

In his coverage video Max even started using fighting game terms to describe moves from the demo because they required too much dexterity to pull off.

Combat looks fine, but what could really ruin this game is if it's repetitive. A map full of bloat, boring quests and stories. Let's hope it's not that.

I think that's a given.

Rarely is a game worth your time when it comes to side quests (and even main quests for that matter). The game will probably be best played by not opening the map, just going wherever your eyes take you, and doing whatever's in the way. Once you get bored, you do 1-2 main missions. Rinse and repeat.

Some gamers think being critical early makes them look informed, but that wide eyed, cant stop smiling excitement when an anticipated game drops a trailer this good is what reminds us why we fell in love with gaming in the first place. Dont lose that inner kid who still believes in adventure, because that spark is what keeps gaming magical no matter how old the game or the person. Lets save the final judgment for when the controller is actually in our hands. Looking forward to this! Pearl Abyss we're counting on you!

I have been trying to play some RPGs like this lately and when you do it really highlights how visually inconsistent some game's open worlds and sightlines are. Just some of them though, not all.

The inconsistent ones tend to use the map (or lines, or UI waypoints) as a crutch and design around it rather than trying to see if they can make a place with good visual landmarks and recognizable areas.

I'm hoping this game has multiple clear points where I can say 'Oh this is where I am' without needing to open the map. That's what makes a world feel more like a world.

Yeah, this could either be fucking awesome or complete shite. Seems like a game that should have had extensive public testing before release but you never know.

Cautiously optimistic. Will wait for impressions.
It's been to at least 5 different expo's with a playable demo in the past year, as well as internal testing in korea multiple times. Much more feedback than the average western triple AAA slop game gets. Just saying.

When I say extensive I was thinking more along the lines of BG3, NRFTW or POE2 not a hands on 30 min demo. Just saying.

My thoughts on the game:

Positives:
  • Graphics
  • Particle effects has been substantially toned down and you can actually see what's going on
  • Seemingly lots of things to do

Worries:
  • Controls, if this sucks, then this will be the deciding factor for not getting the game
  • World lore, plot, story and characters
  • Huge world and lots of things to do, but is it fun to do them and are they meaningful or will they overstay their welcome and fatigue its players?
  • Performance
  • Bugs (UI can already been seen overlapping in the menu and this is a promotional video)

Negatives:
  • MC and playable characters look and behave generic
  • Art direction is not my personal cup of tea. Lighting somehow looks flat even though it's lush, as if there's not enough shadows

Even though this game looks good, it somehow feels a bit off in many ways.
As if it's suffering from an identity crisis.
Like what is the core focus of this game?

This "identity crisis" makes no sense whatsoever. Everything the CD has shown so far is essentially a spiritual successor to Black Desert Online, taking the foundation and taking the idea to another level (the same applies to graphics and art design).

How will it look and perform on current gen consoles I wonder. We've mostly seen PC footage, right? Hopefully we get a decent enough resolution with most graphical bells and whistles intact and a stable framerate. I don't mind 30fps.

I hope they give us options for that.

Jor Raptor says that the mech is an end game upgrade that is obtained from a side mission 1:14

That's what I was thinking, we can also see other type of mech as enemies so it's probably a little faction. I'm assuming it's gonna be the same for the dragon, probably a late/end game reward.

Can't wait honestly !

I want to try a demo cause peeps say the combat is like a fighting game, not a souls game . . . not sure exactly what that means without trying it myself.
If the gameplay clicks with me, I can see this being my GOTY.

I'm just in it for the open world, personally..

It looks unreal 😲

I loved Elden Rings vast vistas but this is bonkers.

You just made me realize that they need to nail the musical front of the experience. They haven't covered it at all in media, so I really hope they do a decent job.

Not many gamers really take music seriously enough until it's too late, but that's completely vital to open world games like this. Feels need to be felt.

I do. All my favorite games (Nier, HK, original GOW trilogy, etc) have incredible music, it's an essential part of the experience. Not only its quality but how it's implemented, when there are silences and when plays a new variation depending on whether conditions, lore events, etc. This is one thing the AAA Chinese gachas nail at incredible level (Genshin, Infinity Nikki) and people barely give them any credit for it, being one of the key elements why people spend hundreds of hours in those open worlds.

In the recent interview you posted the guy also addresses the soundtrack topic, he says they are giving it lot of attention too.

All I need are about one to three really memorable tracks. For me, Dragon's Dogma 1 had 3 and they were all memorable enough for me to add to a playlist.

I'm not expecting Skyrim or Nier, especially not from a first timer in this domain. I think those two soundtracks are rare anomalies.

I've been assuming some big streamer gave that opinion at some point of this game because of how often I'm seeing variations of it repeated lol

Some of you in this thread saying ridiculous stuff like "Personality Disorder" cause this game has planes and mechs need to play more fantasy games than Skyrim, plenty of fantasy games and other fantasy media has concepts like Magitek, but you're right, I guess Final Fantasy 6 is also suffering from a "Personality Disorder" :pie_eyeroll:

It has literal beat em up controls for moves.

This is the type of game that benefits from having a gamepad with 4 programmable back buttons.

I hear in black desert it's more like tekken combos. This doesn't look like that.

My controller has 2 back buttons but I never use them. Never got into the back button thing. Not even sure what I'd program them to.

Just watched this video and the previous. The combat look really varied and reading this thread, it sounds like it isn't like Batman/Shadow of Mordor/War/ which is a good thing. I'm guessing you'll be forced to do all the main quests as Kliff and not the two other playable characters which is an interesting choice. I'm with others in that having a mech is a "what the fuck moment". I'm not familiar with Black Desert Online, but from what little is shown, the hook isn't going to be the story or narrative. I'm curious about the exploration and how hidden points of interest are. The map they showed was littered with points of interest, but those could have been just what the player has discovered and I don't recall seeing any question marks. That's how open world games live and die for me these days. If everything is mapped out for you, I will not have much interest.

Imo it was down to the early reveal.

Even for me, i thought the developers were trolling us when i saw the first footages. They threw every mechnics into it.

But with these last few videos, i see the game is much more grounded and real. I just wish the combat is closer to NGB, with tough AI that attacks you rather than prance around for you to style kill them

From my understanding you play far more aggressively than a souls game and you have fighting game combos with different input, like to chain wrestling moves is gonna feel much more like using king in tekken than just pressing a button and seeing a 10 sec animations.

This is old, they said they simplified the controls so that pic is not true anymore.

It is still gonna have more depth than most open world combats but the controls changed.

Neogaf: we are bored of cinematic realistic games, give us old school gamey ass videogames like the old times.
Also neogaf: what the fuck is this? I can do wrestling moves AND fight robots AND mount a bear? Shit looks whack.

🥲 🥲
