Crimson Desert Combat Overview

Damn! Rockstar has a hard decision to make, delay GTA6 to next year or risk getting embarrassed when they lose GOTY to Crimson Desserts

Unfortunately TGAs are a popularity contest and most websites/journos will vote for GTA.
I dont see GTA losing a popularity vote for GOTY, though im sure a bunch of websites will still give it to Crimson Desert.

But unless I get another deep dive on GTA this game looks borderline fake.
Like if someone was to describe the game to me id say that just sounds like some kids wild idea for a game.
Meanwhile looking at it.....im like damn I might actually skip GTA this year to play this instead.

<--------Skipping GTA this year cuz he is PC only.....but let him have his small victories.

Combat may not be incredibly deep mechanically but looks visceral as hell.
It actually is mechanically deep, and if you check out some recent interviews about it, they actually had to tone down the complicated controls a bit from last summer's demo because mainly FGC-types like Maximillian were able to fully utilize them correctly, while other outlets considered it a negative.

In his coverage video Max even started using fighting game terms to describe moves from the demo because they required too much dexterity to pull off.

Combat looks fine, but what could really ruin this game is if it's repetitive. A map full of bloat, boring quests and stories. Let's hope it's not that.

I think that's a given.

Rarely is a game worth your time when it comes to side quests (and even main quests for that matter). The game will probably be best played by not opening the map, just going wherever your eyes take you, and doing whatever's in the way. Once you get bored, you do 1-2 main missions. Rinse and repeat.

Some gamers think being critical early makes them look informed, but that wide eyed, cant stop smiling excitement when an anticipated game drops a trailer this good is what reminds us why we fell in love with gaming in the first place. Dont lose that inner kid who still believes in adventure, because that spark is what keeps gaming magical no matter how old the game or the person. Lets save the final judgment for when the controller is actually in our hands. Looking forward to this! Pearl Abyss we're counting on you!

I have been trying to play some RPGs like this lately and when you do it really highlights how visually inconsistent some game's open worlds and sightlines are. Just some of them though, not all.

The inconsistent ones tend to use the map (or lines, or UI waypoints) as a crutch and design around it rather than trying to see if they can make a place with good visual landmarks and recognizable areas.

I'm hoping this game has multiple clear points where I can say 'Oh this is where I am' without needing to open the map. That's what makes a world feel more like a world.

Yeah, this could either be fucking awesome or complete shite. Seems like a game that should have had extensive public testing before release but you never know.

Cautiously optimistic. Will wait for impressions.
It's been to at least 5 different expo's with a playable demo in the past year, as well as internal testing in korea multiple times. Much more feedback than the average western triple AAA slop game gets. Just saying.

nah im no longer staying cautiously optimistic, this shit looks awesome. Even more BOTW+Witcher 3 vibes now after watching that. I can't wait.

When I say extensive I was thinking more along the lines of BG3, NRFTW or POE2 not a hands on 30 min demo. Just saying.

My thoughts on the game:

Positives:
  • Graphics
  • Particle effects has been substantially toned down and you can actually see what's going on
  • Seemingly lots of things to do

Worries:
  • Controls, if this sucks, then this will be the deciding factor for not getting the game
  • World lore, plot, story and characters
  • Huge world and lots of things to do, but is it fun to do them and are they meaningful or will they overstay their welcome and fatigue its players?
  • Performance
  • Bugs (UI can already been seen overlapping in the menu and this is a promotional video)

Negatives:
  • MC and playable characters look and behave generic
  • Art direction is not my personal cup of tea. Lighting somehow looks flat even though it's lush, as if there's not enough shadows

Even though this game looks good, it somehow feels a bit off in many ways.
As if it's suffering from an identity crisis.
Like what is the core focus of this game?

This "identity crisis" makes no sense whatsoever. Everything the CD has shown so far is essentially a spiritual successor to Black Desert Online, taking the foundation and taking the idea to another level (the same applies to graphics and art design).
