Crimson Desert on PlayStation 5 Pro - The Digital Foundry Deep Dive

copium.webp

I legitimately don't give a shit how it runs, if I am going to play it it will be on PC anyway 🤷 as I'll most likely get a better experience there even on my crusty old 3060ti

with Ray Reconstruction I'll definitely get a better looking game than even the Pro version as well.

I watched a vid last night that was looking at an interview with a former dev of the game. The dev said the engine had been improved pretty much every year, and their no.1 priority has always been performance. He said the dev team is obsessed with getting good performance.

The PS5/XSX versions will probably have drops like the Pro, but it seems to me they will probably also be 60fps most of the time.
I dont think this will be a Cyberpunk situation at all.

I mean the 3060ti has the power of a 2080 Super, along with better RT cores. You will def get a better experience than the consoles, probably the Pro too due to nvidia RT cores.

So it's just your wishful thinking that the game would run worse on PS5 Pro

That's another level of copium even more pathetic :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

the 3060ti sometimes gives me slightly below PS5 raster performance, sometimes very similar raster performance, and sometimes slightly better... really a tossup between them overall.

but yes, it has of course far better RT performance.
(CP2077 path traced at ~60fps, 1440p DLSS Performance Mode is doable for example)

but I think the main difference here will be the ray reconstruction, but it also seems VERY costly to turn on. so that will push my internal res probably below the PS5 and PS5 Pro to hit 60fps.
but of course I only target 1440p with DLSS and that will give me some render time back as well compared to what the Pro is doing at least.

What he's saying isnt out of the realms of possibility. In fact we already had a couple of games that actually ran slightly worse on the Pro than the base console. One of them pretty recently to.
Cant remember which ones they were but i remember the threads on here about it.

EDIT. Monster Hunter Wilds might of been one of therm?, that just came in my head.

it's not wishful thinking, because, again, I legit personally don't give a shit since I have access to a platform with Ray Reconstruction... I just think that it could indeed run slightly better or exactly the same based on the difference in settings and the really high render time cost of PSSR when going from 1080p to 2160p.

we have seen past Pro versions lose a ton of that 45% theoretical GPU advantage simpy by using PSSR.

All I want is 60fps and Pro delivers, but I don't have a Pro. *womp womp*

Wish we could see if base consolesx are hitting 60fps... It's literally the only thing preventing me from preordering.

The PS5 version will be fine. We can just extrapolate from the PS5 Pro version that already looks good with a solid IQ. It won't look like shit, you have nothing to worry about.

The big question is how well performance holds up when things get hectic, because it seems that this game has a lot going on at once, so the CPU might be taxed a lot.

but I feel so sorry for all the people who won't be able to play this with Ray Reconstruction 😭

Every single videos, every single screen shots of Crimson Desert thus far had been WITHOUT the Ray Reconstruction,

and PS5 PRO users will be more than happy to play just that at 4K 60 :messenger_winking:

weeeeell... that's not true is it?
there's a whole ass Digital Foundry video showing the Ray Reconstruction difference, and the difference is massive at times.

the game uses an insanely low ray count, and a "dumb" denoiser can only do so much to create a cohesive looking result with that. while an ML denoiser like DLSS RR can not only fill gaps intelligently, but also determine good samples more intelligently.

sure, it looks fine, but the difference we have seen is pretty damn big at times.

except that recent video from DF of course duh

Sure, the difference is massive, but is it for better?

the contrast seems way off with so much black crush destroying details making things look unnatural

to my eyes, it looks completely broken and will make my eyes bleed too lol.

People had been rooting for hours of CD videos that were not 'ray recontructed' for the past few years,

and now they suddenly all think that this short new video looks better than what they've been seeing before because DF's renowned pc fanboy Alex told you so? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I mean, that screenshot with the barrels shows completely missing AO on the standard denoiser, as the lack of rays means the denoiser just averages out what little data it gets.

not saying it looks bad with the standard denoiser, according to DF it doesn't even look bad with RT disabled, but it absolutely seems to be a big upgrade with RR

Yeah definitely looks like you are losing details in darker areas with the Nvidia ray reconstruction. Or someone went heavy on gamma slider or something like that.

You know the line moves forward everytime the console reach another milestone, you know what's funny? On Pro you are better than 90% of them PC folks, but it will never enough.. hell some of those people are still playing sub 1080p to keep the framerate stable.

it's almost like something that's in shadow is dark... and if that shadow is missing it's not as dark!

stress i need a drink GIF

I don't care what they play on their pc. I just want what I saw on the trailers at 4K 60 on my PS5 PRO.

A work friend asked me why I got it on the pro and not the series x.
I just assumed the specs were better….

PS5 pro is the best choice if sticking with consoles. The pc master race have their own thread to jerk off in but cant help themselves here.

DF talks more on CD optimizations. They didn't ship the PS5 Pro to DF. Rather they flew someone over with one for John to play on it.

That's true, but some of the areas are indeed too dark. I'm not sure what's happening with this game. Seems to be completely missing AO on consoles, but on PC, some shadows are far too dark.

They should give the option to increase the ray count on PC and have a better RT mode on the Pro at 30fps where diffuse uses 1/4 (or 1/8) rays per pixel instead of the ludicrously low 1/16.

But the CPU in base and Pro is almost the same, isn't it?
So the performance drops in the DF Pro video should be there in the base PS5 and the 30fps quality mode should be fine almost all the time.
I don't get the concern from people, but that's 2026 I guess. And I don't think it will get better anytime soon unfortunately.
I'm looking forward to this game immensely. It will be awesome. Been playing Dragons Dogma 2 from which I bounced off after about 20 hours playtime, just to get in the mood of a open world action adventure. But I don't think I'll get as disappointed with Crimson Desert as with DD2.

1080p looking like 4K due to the power of AI upscaler duh~ lol
What AI upscaler? If you are referring to the inbuilt stuff TVs have, they are hardly the same as DLSS or PSSR. It can maybe enhance a few details, but the effect is far off from a native 4k image.

I mean, tons of people were complaining in this thread about lack of AO and mediocre RTGI in certain scenes - before PC footage with RR was shown. Pro version still looks good but it's obvious that standard denoiser sucks for some things.

Tell you what, you enjoy your black crushed PC version with ray reconstruction and we'll make do with the slumlord PS5 Pro version ;)

You have both on PC. And it's not like gamma/brightness sliders exists in games...

TIL that we cheer for games to be unoptimised to own the console chuds 🤦‍♂️.

Weird narrative, everyone should be disappointed its not well optimized, brute forcing a $8000 pc to make it run well isnt what we should be cheering.

did i miss it or did they just not talk about what difference between the Ultra raytracing and High raytracing?????

i feel like they just assume ppl wont use Quality so dont bother talking about its benefits outside of resolutions, abit annoying

This game is sorely lacking higher RT options on PC.
While the RR version certainly looks way ahead of the standard the amount of black crush due to that ridiculously low ray and bounce count is really unnecessary, especially because that should be so very easily scalable.

He's talking about PSSR upscaling 1080p to 4K in Performance mode.
