Nvidia at Live GTC : DLSS 5

Insane.

2026... Unless we getting new next gen GPU this year, this isn't 6000 exclusive. And if that's the case the holy god this is so stunning if they can manage to run it under one GPU

This looks incredible, and is obviously a generational leap. If this had come out without AI slop being a thing, the reaction here would be more positive. It's got a negative association now, but I don't understand how you can look at this and not see it's next-level compared even to path tracing.

First impressive were very EWWWW but the more I watched the more I'm kinda blown away. We'll have to see more examples but if a game is going for a photo real look especially for environments, this has fast forwarded fidelity years, decades?

I predict there will be a phase where we all obsessively flip back and forth on the graphics while playing a game, to eventually leave it on.

It seems to default to looking like those GTA IV 100 mods ultra realistic reshade videos. Which are something cool, most times ugly.

It also seems to strip character on environments. Will everything converge and homogenize?

I don't think you understand the main issue here.

this is only looking into screen space. it doesn't know if theres any geometry or light outside of your current view.

you can easily see this issue in their comparison of Oblivion Remaster, where in the DLSS5 view a whole shadow is missing on the building behind the tree, because the shadow casting part of that building is obscured by a tree and because the filter doesn't know where the sun is.

the shadow of the tree is also completely gone, as it thinks its is looking at an overcast weather condition, due to lacking actually world space information.

this is also why the entire light temperature changes, as the DLSS5 view has only 1 information about lighting, and that is the background in the far distance, which is grey, so it thinks the lighting around you should also be grey, while it's actually much warmer.

of note here is that the game uses Lumen for realtime GI, shadows and reflections, so if there's a shadow there, it is not placed by an artist, it is calculated in real time that it belongs there due to the sun position. yet DLSS5 doesn't know it belongs there, so it's gone.

DLSS5 in the state they are showing it here is an absolute joke.
Not saying that you are wrong, but I think you are making a lot of assumptions here about a technology that we know only a few things so far

Lumen is hardly a benchmark for realtime GI, so it might not look correct in the first place. Maybe DLSS 5 is the correct way to light the scene using the Sun as a lightsource, but some parameters are off 'cause it's Nvidia, not actual devs giving a shit about how it should look (like changing it to a more warmer look etc.)

We shall see how it goe when actually used by devs.

It's new tech (when used in realtime games) and I can't not be excited about it, even if it turns out to be shit. We shall see,

Pathtracing is the sweet spot and that's a bad angle for Grace cause she looks amazing if she's facing directly at us

What's the point of this being an upscaler if the requirements go thought the roof?
This.

We already have insane prices where lots of people can't even keep up to a good level so most people don't even have 5070ti, 5080, or even 5060ti compared to the older days when it was easier and more fair for consumers to keep up like the gtx 1060, 1070, and 1080.

And then all those scumbags wanna increase the price to being even higher than mrsp which were already overpriced in the first place already.

And now they wanna do something that is even further then that where you'll need the most absolutely top end 32gb just to experience. Unless a miracle happens and they'll release 32gb powerful cards in 2027/2028 for a fair price for consumers at 500 or below but that's obviously not happening.

Just glad I don't like those A.I filter shits and would just stick to the settings I have now. But how long before they force games to be extra demanding because of this shit.

If you're upset about this I have some bad news for you about PS6 /PS6P & Xbox Next
This is brand new tech they can barely get working on dual 5090s. There's no way we're getting this tech in next gen. Maybe the one after (if there even is one), but this next one not a chance in hell.

But what if the developers chose how the filter was applied - then it becomes the artistic intent. People turn off motion blur, vignetting, chromatic abberation, film grain all the time - even if the original artistic intent was to have them applied.
That's why I said - if devs control the process, it might be different story. But most of what they showed there - especial Requiem and Oblivion - comes off like bad AI art.

Everyone complains about incremental gains and diminishing returns between gens and then we get this, the single biggest jump in visuals probably in gaming history and all people can say is slop. You do know its not released yet right? This is proof of concept and literally as bad as its ever going to be as they will refine it more and more. Absolutely fantastic stuff. Im blown away.
