Crimson Desert on PlayStation 5 Pro - The Digital Foundry Deep Dive

He's talking about PSSR upscaling 1080p to 4K in Performance mode.

Oh, then he is right. For some reason I thought he was talking about the regular PS5. PSSR2 upscaled to 4k from 1080p will look close to 4k. Not quite the same, but it will look good.

People received copies of RE9 days before the street date. I don't suppose it could happen to console bros for this game? We could get some early opinions. Even if it did, they apparently need the activation servers to download that 48GB patch and the servers aren't live yet.

So I guess all the reviews are going to be for the PC version? PA are being a bit too cagey for my liking with all this. First time I've ever seen the "activation server" excuse.

I mean, tons of people were complaining in this thread about lack of AO and mediocre RTGI in certain scenes - before PC footage with RR was shown.

'tons of people' were complaining about the graphics of Crimson Desert?

Not sure where you come from, but I've never seen such thing myself :messenger_tears_of_joy:

And I certainly didn't see any of things you mentioned in DF Alex's CD video without RR :messenger_winking:

But in that video game was native 4k, so even this low res RT will look better with resolution being this high (and there still was boiling present). We also didn't know how the game looks with RR...

In this thread you can see people complaining about flat lightning etc.

So are all of the previously released videos of Crimson Desert.

The upper mentioned 'tons of people' that complained about 'lack of AO' and 'mediocre RT GI' based their opinion on those videos too right?

Or are you saying that only the Alex's video is in 4K, so he didn't notice any of these 'lack of AO' and 'mediocre RT GI'? :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Game has mediocre RTGI presentation in some places without RR (AMD or NV), and it looks much better with competent denoiser.

Why are we even discussing this? In this thread I was talking with another poster, defending RTGI because it looked bad to him (and I said it would look even worse with just raster lighting).

You'll never win an argument against Bojji, master of the moving goalpost. "Tons of people" will turn into "some people" and then maybe eventually a "few people" but in Bojji land it's all the same...

Oh yeah, there was only universal praise in this thread :pie_eyeroll:

I think he's a lot better than those who insist AI upscaled 4K is just 1080P (only applies to PS5 PRO) :messenger_winking:

When we talk about resolution there is separation between native and output. I don't believe you need to be reminded about this?

Even is output looks the same (or very close) this is important when talking about things like performance etc.

So you're telling me that I need to explain myself in posts like this that I'm not talking about the native 4K? :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

To be fair the lack of AO on the footgae shown over the past weeks was the one thing that really stood out in regards to the overall graphics quality, especially in regards to the grass and foilage. Thats why i said a couple of times in 2 of the other CD threads that i thought the game looked good but people were overhyping the graphics.

RR transforms the game though from a good looking game into a great looking game.

I don't even know what are we talking about anymore

'When we talk about resolution there is separation between native and output. I don't believe you need to be reminded about this?'

This is precisely what you told me, and.. have I ever posted anything that didn't separative these two?

If I haven't, why are you telling me this? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Because you are implying that I don't know the difference between native 1080p resolution with dumb upscaling and 1080p resolution reconstructed to 4K by ML upscaler - just to make Sony look bad or something.

So apparently they are not letting ANYONE see ps5 base footage until release.

Like, not even reviewers. No one can see it until launch. Lol

And when did I say such thing?

Fuck me, I totally misunderstood your post :

Sorry, that's what 4 hours of sleep and world premiere of PSSR2 update/DLSS5 teaser in the same day do to a man...

All because some of your pc fanboy friends desperately tried to deny such simple truth :messenger_winking:
The two guys that responded to you are hardly PC fanboys. You can check their post history if you don't believe me. I'm not one either for that matter, although my preference is PC. Most of my gametime this year has been on my Switch 2 funnily enough.

What is that statement from?

Not sure why you wanna know, but here :messenger_winking:

50 minutes?

fuck that I'm not summarizing this one.

edit: skimmed and this one seems like a typical youtuber stream, will just wait for Oliver's video where he breaks down console specs and stats.

Pssr2 isn't doing a very good job with this particular game. Outdoors it looks mostly fine although with a keen eye its not hard to see the noise, it just gets covered up well outside, but as soon as you step INDOORS the lighting is completely broken and full of nasty artifacting.

I'm NOT shitting on PSSR2. It is wonderful in most games but strangely there are certain games that it seems to do very little for! This is after testing a bunch of games. The 3 games in partucular that still have the same iq issues as before that Im referring to are Crimson Desert, CONTROL, and Dragon Age Veilguard.

Johns preview was a little too glowing for this game on the Pro. He actually undersold the RT noise issues and oversold things like water and rt reflections.

Dont get me wrong most of the time spent walking around OUTDOORS is stunning and one of the most impressive looking games but remember he was supposedly playing using PSSR1? Well the game is out and the IQ is rough at times even with the supposed change to pssr2...

I suspect John was using pssr2 and got confused by Sonys messaging, otherwise we should be seeing an improvement from Johns preview to now.

Indoors lighting has some or the worst noise/artifacts ive seen in a game. Easily as bad as Silent Hill 2's worst case areas....maybe its something only the Crimson Devs can fix? A glitch perhaps with the rtgi? Either way I find it pretty unacceptable...its broken afaic when inside any building

Digital foundry is not a reliable source anymore. They are here for the money 💰

Not really the fault of PSSR2 in this case. Just like it's not the fault of PSSR2 in RE9. The issue is very low rays with the RT implementation combined with a non-ml denoiser.

Higher resolution helps, so if you can try dropping down to balanced or quality mode.

Yeah, game can look low res in places with DLSS as well. That's because in game denoiser and resolution of RT effects is super low res.
