Switch 2 - Handheld Boost Mode for Switch 1 games!

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

← Boost ON → Boost OFF

Old guard would not have released a $100 virtual boy shell that is only playable while your sub service is active either, yet here we are. Any higher ups that would care have higher-higher ups and they aren't named Iwata.

Switch 1: Iwata's last gift. Kimishima just had to keep the show running with all the machinations Iwata left behind to launch it, including BOTW, and he was neither great nor terrible. They didn't make very many great Switch games that were not first Wii U games though, and they're still selling Iwata-era WiiU games as backbones of the library.

Furukawa on S2: "it has the look and feel and quality you expect from Nintendo" gave me Tim Cook taking over for Steve Jobs vibes, with a tinge of defensiveness. That's where the framerate suddenly became relevant. Full-on corporate mode licensing IPs for toys and movies, building theme parks and whoring out the back catalog to an extreme. Since the only new features in 2 were more power and I guess mouse mode. That's why their "Nintendo Land" game to teach you the system was that $10 welcome tour to educate you about mice and framerates...which I think would utterly baffle Iwata. Like "you think you're trying to do what I did, but you're copying me all wrong".

It's sometimes a good thing of course like this boost mode, but the shift in corporate identity is still a shock.
Are you trying to make me so fucking depressed I kill myself? All jokes aside, I think there's something to be said about how the old guard at least seem to have trained the new developers in their development culture. Nintendo still make great games even though most of the old guard isn't active in the development cycle no more.

In Witcher 3 you can see the UI is bigger with boost. Also the mesh in Witcher's stomach area is finer with more detail.

I've been wanting to restart the Switch version, but I've been waiting (hopeful) for a Switch 2 upgrade. Maybe this is enough for me to jump back in.

I bought it on a deep discount in hopes there will be a Switch 2 version at some point (the Cyberpunk port gave me hope). I booted it up last night just to check it out, and it definitely looks a lot better now on the Switch 2 screen, but I'm still going to wait and see, I think.

Are there any boost mode benefits to games if only play in TV mode ?

No. This just lets you play in TV mode while using the Switch 2 as a handheld.

Awesome update, I've been doing this with my hacked Switch for years to get better performance. Glad to see it's possilbe on the Switch 2 now.

Yoshi's Crafted World looks sooo much better.
Mario Wonder & Mario vs Donkey Kong look like they were made for the Switch 2.
Lego Harry Potter & Burnout Paradise are nicely improved. Mortal Kombat 11 looks better... but still like ass. Don't really see much differences with Diablo 3.. *They'reTheSamePicture*

oh wow...

this just puts into perspective what an absolute joke the Xenoblade X paid Switch 2 Edition is imo:

like, how do you make a game look this shit? AND ASK FOR MONEY FOR IT TOO?

I switched back and forth a few times, and it looked the same to me. Same with the screenshots. I don't see any difference there.

Witcher 3 was "great" switch port (great as in, perfectly enjoyable despite the obvious cutbacks). However, in the year 2026 of our Lord, I refuse to touch it again unless it gets a real Switch 2 upgrade; which I think will eventually happen.

The UI size is the easiest to notice. Look near the center where the end of UI touches the background. They end more towards the middle cause they're bigger and not downscaled in boost. The differences in mesh might just be due to a slightly different animation angle.

All these are upscaled in desktop mode so should look better
  • ARK: Survival Evolved
  • The Outer Worlds
  • DOOM Eternal
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2, 3
  • Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
  • Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes
  • No Man's Sky
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Apex Legends
  • Fortnite
  • Warframe
  • Dying Light: Platinum Edition
  • Subnautica

Mario Wonder looks display-native 1080p as you'd expect. UI clarity aside I think Switch OLED looks better overall and I didn't really test a high speed level out yet.

Some of these games already have a Switch 2 version

This is just the console pretending to be on TV mode all the time
