Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Man wish I could play Crimson Desert to see for myself if it beats AC Shadows or not. As it is from just looking at screens it doesn't seem better, Shadows highs are still a bit higher for me.

But I'm burned out by open worlds and the obsession of taking screenshots. I mean just between Shadows and Cyberpunk I have 10K screens.

In half a year or so I'll play CD, maybe they're gonna fix or improve some things by then.

They didn't change engine version?
Nope. If they did, it wasnt mentioned in the blog. The blogpost simply says some optimizations were made to how they render various different effects and handle distant LODs. They added VSMs to improve performance. Not sure how that works since it kills performance in any game i enable it, but thats what they said.

They also improved their shader stutters to handle all the different materials the weapons could spawn with. Crazy that they didnt realize that their own weapons are random and their shader compilation should account for every single shader. Took them five months after launch to figure that out lol.

Google says they were already using 5.5. 5.6 is the version that CD project said improves hardware lumen performance to match software lumen performance, but borderlands 4 only uses Software lumen so not much to be gained by going to 5.6.

Yeah, im done with Crimson Desert for now. Turned off Ray Reconstruction, set everything to Ultra, and DLAA and now its flickering at the top of the screen. Tried everything, DLSS4. DLSS4.5, no DLSS and it only goes away when im not using DLAA. It sucks because i can actually run it at native 4k 60 fps with DLSS4.5 but the tearing at the top is impossible to ignore since its literally a black bar constantly flickering.

Going to wait a few patches and see if they can fix DLSS. Without ray reconstruction, the RT noise on my helmet is really bad in cutscenes.

Tried forcing v sync in the driver?

Gearbox released a blogpost showing performance improvements they have made since launch.

That's a 40% performance uplift. I guess UE5 wasnt the issue after all.

Just goes to show UE5 gets a lot unwarranted criticism for devs not bothering to optimize their game. The games with their own custom engine that ppl think run well is bc the studios behind them are top tier and care about optimization.

Phenomenal screens. What are the specs?

Also yea they trade blows together. Crimson looks really damn good but def has some tech issues. I'm really lenient on tech issues myself because for some reason they tend not to really bother me too much. Like for instance, pop in never bothers me at all. Neither do framerate drops unless it becomes unplayable. Even then if it's only a few times I don't really care.

Ass creed has about 10x the polish CD does… but also 10x less soul

I just saw a reddit thread about the Witcher 4 tech demo and the comments were almost unanimously stuff like "who cares about graphics, I would be fine if it just looked like The Witcher 3" and I shouldn't feel mad about trivial internet shit like this but I do lol

Here is a screenshot where you can clearly see all the next-gen features very well:

A simple location—but if you look closely, it's the details in the equipment that stand out. Gloves, lanterns, and so on—even the finer elements are fully textured.
On top of that, every object in the room is equipped with extremely high-quality textures. Combined with the excellent lighting, including ray reconstruction, the indirect lighting is truly outstanding. Whether it's beneath the chairs or around the notes attached to the wall, everything is correctly shaded through indirect lightning.
Then there are details like the metallic objects near the window, which produce realistic reflections due to the natural light coming from outside.
It's all these small details adding up that create such a high-quality and realistic image. It feels natural, not artificially staged.
Really fascinating how far real-time graphics have come!

Yep. This is straight up cg or path traced.

I gotta admit, this looks superb, like a pre-rendered image.

RE4 Remake is one of my favorite games of all time, but man after playing a lot of RE9. Now RE4 looks outdated next to it.

When are we going to get this ugly lighting out of gaming? Glad to see Nvidia pushing real hard via PT & AI.

Crimson Desert isn't a game where you have immaculate small objects. It's a game where you have actual insanely vast view distance coupled with good environment and world design.

And the feeling is multiplied because you know that if you see something waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay there you can go there and explore that. Crimson desert world is insanely vast. Like i spend already like 50-60hours and I barely did anything in first zone. And there are like 5 "zones". Moreover it isn't like Ubisoft game where stuff is just shat for no reason, quary you see there ? It can provide you with stone for your camp + there is ruins there. The appiary in woods ? Also stuff you can use. Cart fence ? Yes, steal a cart and fence it here for money. Since there is crafting in the game and a lot of resources are needed if you find some logging site you are rewarded with a new place to stock on timber for those shields/bows upgrades. Then there is the interaction. Pretty much almost everything can be stolen much like in skyrim. Shitload of stuff takes damage and gets scatered dropping additional drops. On top of that you see people working on fields, traveling, getting amushed, getting their stuff stolen etc.

In other words screenshots don't do it justice. Because screenshots can't show you little animations of kids playing with goats etc. you watch during gameplay.

Dunno man, the writing on the papers looks AI generated, I despise the creators for using AI, I boycotted the game for it.

Joking, I love everything that I see of CD, and I can't wait to play it once I'm done with other games.

An ancient Ryzen 5600x and an RTX 4070, I squeezed the life out of them. As for the game, it's 4K DLSS Q, maxed out with motion blur and CA turned off, no reshade or anything.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, from screens, CD looks amazing and that draw distance is very impressive and better than Shadows. Also some interior locations look fantastic.
That pop in for me is a bit of an eye sore. The distance pop in, I don't mind, but the one near to the player is jarring.
If they fix this, along with other inconsistencies and the color of grass when it's daytime, it may beat Shadows.

That's why I said I wish to play to better see for myself.

Don't care about gameplay stuff, if we were to compare these kinds of complexities for every game, then a lot of games wouldn't merit a place in the discussion.

Also, it's not like Shadows doesn't have a big ass world and a technically and visually amazing weather and seasons system that impacts gameplay and quests. It has good physics too.
Yeah, the world may be emptier and less enjoyable, but you still have lots of side shit to do.

Represent. Represent. said it better, 10x the polish… but also 10x less soul. So when or if they fix the issues, I can see it beating Shadows.

But as I say this over and over, I try to detach myself from the game, whether I like it or not when judging visuals.

Ended up double dipping for PC to use HUD remove mod and camera adjustment. Ps5Pro looked good but RR on PC is on a different level.

You're telling me I wasn't just high ? There's no friggin HUD removal in this game?!?!?

How do they not have that in there. They even added in (the most bare bones one I ever seen) a photo mode for launch

Yeah they even released trailers that show gameplay captures with no HUD, was a weird omission. I guess it was pretty low on the release build of "to-do" things to get the game ready for launch.

AC Shadows looks way better IMO.

Again, something about the IQ/image stability in Crimson Desert really kills the overall package for me. Hopefully they'll get the color grading/pop-in/DLSS/FSR issues ironed out because the potential is definitely there.

Shadows is overall better looking on consoles imo, individual elements cd does better, and it's doing a lot more stuff in many ways - but the overall thing is not as cohesive

Shadows are the biggest offender for IQ in Crimson Desert. They shimmer like crazy in open areas a few meters apart from the camera. Smaller elements' shadows keep shimmering even by standing in front of them. This game really needs RT shadows or higher res shadowmaps / better cascaded shadows. This happens with RR on and maxed out settings.

I am also not really convinced about environmental textures, which are low res and blurry most of the times. You can see the game is made to run efficiently also on lower end systems, but those who have extra power should have the possibility to push details further.
