Speaking of which...

If LiD: Inferno is still kicking around with those numbers, I expect Marathon will be with us for a long, long time.

These are the weekend posts I live for.

Theres many games that I dont think are good, but they score well or sell millions. Sometimes I'll know/think the actual gameplay sucks, and others times its just not for me or doenst gel with me. I hate Mario Galaxy but its great. Hades and most rogue likes arent for me.

The actual core gunplay, combat, strategies and gameplay is great in Marathon imo. So do you dislike the gunplay, combat, or the genre of extraction shooter aspect of it?
You say its ugly and weird, and thats fine. Thats a reason enough. I enjoy the lore, and look. It reminds me of the weird old PS1 ads, mixed with Black Mirror, Squid games and Mirrors Edge. Theres not another FPS that looks like it or has the atmosphere. Not the biggest fan of the character designs, but that doesnt bother me much.

And you say, its non stop sweaty, yes for sure, so Im guessing its the PVP extraction shooter part of it. And understable thats not for most people. Theres was times in RE9 with the stalker characters that I told myself, i hate this shit…. I kinda hated marathons sweaty moments at start too. But the good extracts and finishing missions gave that satifaction when you finally did it or went on a roll.

Only the last week, I feel more confident in the map, instead of sprinting into fights or running away, I can scope it for a second and see if its worth it. But still, just when you get overconfident, you get reminded you're never safe. After I hear the exfils and think, ah theres 5 mins on the map alone, and I get a bunch of stuff and extract, sometimes theres still a motherfucker that was close by.

Im not the biggest fan of challenging games or even PVP. I enjoy Fromsoft, Returnal, and can play COD pvp etc. Out of my 1000 hours of Destiny, PVP was probably 10-20% of that. But for some reason, despite me being pissed off and frustrated at times in Marathon, I prefer the PVP overall to Destiny or Cod. I can be a sneak, strategise, run away and come back lol.. And with a crew, revives and comebacks, different tactics make for some great memorable moments.

Imo, if they launched this along with a Marathon remake, announced D3 before the release and added some training mode, and PVE with PVP zones as options to the core game, there would be alot less hate, and people complaining about the extraction part. Its just people are unhappy they didnt get what they wanted. But imo, its still a top extraction game and great FPS. Im glad they made it and Im gonna play it. Right now I just want an easier Cryo, or less PVP in it, because its insanely hard for me lol

Anyway, Im off to finish some work and then guilt free be able to play for a few hours

Yea it's definitely subjective, like I said I'm the same I love from games and platinumed a handful but finished them all, love pvp in so many formats been to the lighthouse many many times in destiny for trials, solod my Lunas howl and not forgotten etc.. I like sweaty but I don't seek it out meaning if it's there in a game I love I'll handle it but I don't seek out 24/7... I don't fun from difficult stuff but I don't need it to enjoy myself.

So for me I hate the look of marathon and I hate extraction, two things that are a total kill for me ultimately. I absolutely love bungies gun mechanics and i will give them that, but it's not enough to carry me anymore it's why I quit destiny it all got stale and their lack of pvp updates, maps etc was so bad I had to finally roll out.

I tried arc and if I were to play extraction it'd be that but even then I come to realize I hate extraction, I just don't like the loop for it one bit so it'll forever be something I don't seek. But it's bungie so I was automatically interested, if this was another dev team I wouldn't even give it any attention at all.

The only thing that could motivste me is adding modes like TDM or domination etc give me a place to take my gear without the constant idea of losing it. I just personally hate the concept of extraction it really boils down to that, bad gameplay loop imo

Edit : and to note I gave bungie about 7 to 8k hours since 2014, was dedicated beyond words.. So it's why I'm a bit bitter with bungie basically letting destiny 2 die for this game.

The current state of the game does not have to be the final state of the game. Live Service is about building before release AND after release.
Obviously not and it wont be, Its a live service game. Changes will come, probably around season 3.

To answer you earlier question, they need to sort out the onboarding, the UI icons (functionality is fine) the performance on PC and impliment some form of hidden MMR or loose gear requirements/limits on the maps.

The core game is super solid.

I don't play multiplayer games so for me it's easily fixed with a single player campaign. Change the design too. Concord could've been saved too that way.

That's not a fix that's a different game.

Bit like me saying I'd fix crimson desert by making it a battle royale.

No bunny hill pve. There needs to be a fully featured, start to finish PvE mode with full access to progression and gear.

I'm not playing a game like this with sweaty pvp players. Doing a raid where I can be ganked by a no life pro sounds like hell to me.

When Halo released, people were game planning how to save Halo

Or sometimes a game sucks, you fail, and your company folds. It could have a chance if they redid all graphics in an anime style—prove me wrong.

Eggs-act-lee.

I'm with Fess. I like Bungie games. I've played all of them since Halo: CE, but nothing about Marathon speaks to me. :messenger_confused:
Then its not for you then is it?

I've also played all the Bungie games. PVP is in their DNA, it speaks to me.

Said it earlier, the problem is the budget (if true). Think this started out as a smaller side project, then because something bigger. Blame the management and Sony. The Devs did a great job.

Few of us said in the test thread last year this was super niche and would settle around 20-30k CCU doesn't look like that was two far off.

Okay but that's still how it is. If they had something for single player gamers then more people would play it, targeting just one type of gamer is always risky.

This clip seems to be making the rounds and is tangentially related to this topic.

But I think the biggest hurdle is the game isn't appetizing to look at. Destiny whether your a pve player, pvp, love or hate raids.. The game looked cool, felt cool, had a cool premise of building characters.. Not losing your gear endlessly. Most people don't want that.

Be real here with us, bro, u think any of the leftists toxic positivy bungie devs in charge of how game looks/plays arent some deluded and entitled af creatures who love smell of their farts?
Those guys were stoopid enough to think marathon gonna do somewhat decent numbers, they got 0 actual reason and logic behind them, only thing they deserve is the_professor treatment.

Full disclousure if i wanted to save bungie as dev studio(coz marathon cant be saved) i would cut off all the cancer cells(very overpaid devs who have 0 talent) and basically form new team with core veterans who had based mindset and made halo-like singleplayer campaing as main focus with multiplayer component kinda like gta5 did it.

That way u get 5m+ sold copies from hc gamers halo enthusiast crowd from the get go and on top ofc u can build community/get additional value from mtx in multiplayer mode.

The game needs to be way less hardcore. Right now it appeals to the sweatiest of the sweats, and that's not a terrible thing, but there aren't as many of them.

The PvE enemies are actually challenging and fun to fight. Lean a lot into that. Figure out how to weave PvE into the PvP in a way that's closer to what they're doing with Cryo Archive.

If you die and no one takes your stuff, you should get to keep it.

Build a jump gate between Milky Way and Tau Ceti. Bring NPCs in and have them set up bases on Tau Ceti 4.

Have the extraction portion be a high risk high reward mode where it exists as it does today, but it's the only ay to get certain gear.

There's a million ways to save this. There's 0 reason to give up on it before they try.

WTF

I think the game is great, amazing even. But for me it is a bit too hardcore to reach the endgame stuff. I would prefer a casual optional PVE mode where you could progress but not get any of the best loot or weapons. Basically play most maps but not get everything - to learn the ropes and for casual players

They could then level up and play the "real" mode later

Disagree. Obviously if they had a campaign then more people might play it but would you say Resident Evil is risky because it targets one type of gamer?

Deadlock seems to be doing just fine multiplayer only same when Overwatch released. Seems to me that Bungie targeted a very specific audience and wildly overestimated how big that audience was.

You can think this. I'd argue the opposite. I think Marathon is way more attractive than Destiny.

That said, you were never really the target demo for Marathon. If ARC Raiders didn't pull you in, I'm not sure how valid your feedback can possibly be. Marathon needs to attract the people who stopped playing and the people who were on the fence...not so much those who are allergic to the extraction genre.

Pretty much this.

After Barrett got fired and they put Joe Ziegler on the project as director, the game seems to have shifted hard towards PvP.

Ziegler created Valorant, and that game is also mostly hardcore gamers and has a huge dedicated player base, so they probably thought he'd make a game that would bring in a similar crowd. But Valorant benefited from the already huge CS crowd.

Well, too bad. Its a live service game after all. If they want to change it into something you dont like to try getting more money, you can do fuck all.
Whats too bad? Ill play it until i get bored or it turns into something i dont like and move on.

Or ill just continue to enjoy a great game. Either way I've had my monies worth.

Is it so hard to understand big budget AAA game from veteran established western studio has to have mainstream appeal? Marathon doesnt have that, example of a game i gave u for bungie to make would have mainstream appeal, if u want bungie to survive it cant make games that only appeal to super niche non mainstream audience, does it makes sense or not?

Bungie is fucked: from 850 employee to 400 after another round of layoffs or close studio in 2027

Worse studio bought by Sony

It sold relatively well at launch. It clearly has a degree of widespread appeal. The problem is that it has too many rough edges to keep players playing. Rough edges that will be addressed in the coming months. You have to remember, this genre is taking off like nothing we've seen since Battle Royale.

If you can move on from marathon so easily, guess the game isn't that great after all. Which i guess explain a lot about its current popularity.
Resident Evil Reqium players are hilarious.

"You only played Marathon for 200 hours and spent $40 dollars, what a disaster for you."

We're doing the same math on your $70 dollar games bro.

I want to be able to respawn so I don't have to wait 5 minutes between getting killed and having to play again. My play time is already limited by real life.

Allow me to keep the weapon and its attachments I am holding when killed. I want to feel some attachment to the things in the game I am busting my ass to find. I feel like a walking piñata.

Go to Steam and look at the top 10 most played games on the platform. Then go look at what their numbers were when they initially launched.

I don't think Marathon has Fortnite level potential because it's DNA is too niche, but f*** outta here if you think it can't stop the bleeding and modestly grow over the next year or two.

Any of these had 30k players during their first month?

You can fool yourself all you want, but the game will be dead in less than 2 years from now.

And I can bet you on that

Nice way to try and twist it to fit your narrative.

Let me wipe those elitist single player tears from you eyes before i go play some Marathon.

I'm not a resident evil requiem player.

But theres a big difference between dropping a game out of boredom and because you've beaten it. Not to mention i can come back and replay some game i liked whenever i want, years later if so. I've certainly done that plenty of times.

Cant do that with live service, as even if they're still operational, they prob arent even the same game anymore. Though i guess it doesn't matter since it appears these games are so boring their actual fans have 0 problem with them blinking out of existence.

wait... so if players are willing to pay more for a game that lasts less... DOES THAT MEAN SP IS MORE PROFITABLE THAN MP??????🤯

This is boring me I'm out. Just play shit you like guys. Quit hating shit you don't. Things would be a lot more palatable around these parts.
