So, I'm Coming Out....

Dawn of War, Aliens Dark Descent, Halo Wars, and Warhammer Chaos Gate

If you liked XCOM 2 then this is a good recommendation, made by the Battletech / Shadowrun guys:

It launched in a terrible state and killed its studio but it's in a great state now, with a lot of fresh ideas. Just be aware it's kinda woke by GAF standards.

This is the kind of idiotic, waste of time, mostly useless garbage that makes me love Neogaf.

I'm happy for you OP. I also like those games.

.... as someone who is actually enjoying real-time and some turn based (XCom like) strategy games.

This is a genre I never cared for and was probably my least favorite but after Dawn of War, Aliens Dark Descent, Halo Wars, and Warhammer Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters, I'm actually really enjoying the genre now.

Halo Wars was my introduction and I had a blast. I actually enjoyed it more than most other Halo games.

So there it is. Please don't judge.
Get disgaea
Nothing beats it

I'm already ahead. I own what I think is Disgaea 4 on PS3. To be honest I'm not a big fan of those games even though their turn based. The turn bases ones I like are more like XCom. In other words something that has RPG type elements especially considering RPG is my favorite genre.

I don't know if already play it or not but Valkyria Chronicles series are fucking amazing SRPGs

Idunno about the sequels, but Disgaea 1 for ps2 is really good. Highly recommend it. The systems are way more polished than any other strategy jrpg I've ever played, and the dialogue is actually really funny imo. The postgame content is for crazy people and preteens who have hours and hours to spend, but that's all optional.

The pc version adds a bunch of ugly graphical "upgrades" but fortunately you can turn them all off to get it looking like the ps2 game again. Also there's a mod to get the voice of the original Etna voice actress back in the game.

Never played it but I remember reading about the first one.
Then fucking play it.

OP, I recommend Gears Tactics. It's turn-based, and field resources aren't a component of the gameplay (except for one of the mission types). But it has the same requirements for planning and strategy. It's also very easy to learn its mechanics with a perfectly designed tutorial first mission.

+1, incredible game. Loved it

2022's real GOTY, Midnight Suns, is currently 85% off on Steam.

Ewww, Midnight Suns was a halfway decent combat engine that might've stood on its own if it wasn't connected with an absolutely TERRIBLE "social game sim" thingy.
The writing is so terrible that it is mind blowing to me that people actually enjoyed it. At 85% off I would still feel ripped off.
