Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

Publisher vs empty game

Built as a pvp extraction game, catastrophically flopped, and now has to be panic rebuilt with the other more popular modes it should have had fully integrated at launch.

It still may not work of course -and they have made it much harder for themselves than it would have been to get it right in the first place- but it for sure gives them a better chance than the 'just keep tinkering around the edges and pray for a miracle' approach some have been advocating for.

Great news for Marathon really. Most people called it including me.

Start with a mode and expand into a full game. Any sort of Bungie PvE almost guarantees the game won't be DEAD dead. I understand taking shots on Extraction and broken PvP mode (rightfully so) but I don't understand how can people not respect the Bungie PvE chops ?

It still will primarily be a sweaty shooter but I bet it might attract only PvE crowd also (even though it is lite-mode with 40$ tag). People underestimated Destiny Crucible PvP addicts and now undermining how many PvE casuals there are also.

OmegaGenre wasn't Omega enough so they need to tack on a PVE mode.

To everyone else, it proves that it failed as a standalone Extraction Shooter. To a Snake Oil Salesman, he'll somehow see this as a justification of his support of the game even though PvE is completely different from a hardcore extraction shooter.

Could it save the game? Anything can happen I guess. But I think they still need to address one of the biggest hurdles that hurts it as a Gaas and that is the butt ugly character designs. But Bungie will Bungie and will continue to keep its head in the sand.

How long are we looking at for them to conduct the kind of pivot away from this single unpopular game mode to more of a pve / full package deal like they're talking about? At least another year or two right?

Guy got a month long ban

I'll give them credit for this. Although, to be fair they probably wouldn't have taken action except that the video went viral and hurt the already struggling game. Anybody running Cryo would be paranoid that somebody using an exploit would just step out of a wall and ruin all their hard work. Marathon fans are their own worst enemies as seen in this thread.

It will always be a PvP at its core. but nailing a PvP game I bet is much harder than PvE which Bungie already has enough milking data on.
Even their Season 5 PvE mode will be a MVP of sorts and people will love it, in the absence of Destiny updates.

LMFAO the marathon subreddit really can't help themselves. Bungie announce a PVE mode to actually keep casuals playing and the top comments are people hoping it's insanely difficult or so hard "people would rather play PvP".

Gatekeeping morons really want the game to die just to preserve their own sense of superiority.

No, mmorpgs are mmorpgs. Extraction shooters are a weird game mode that born out of Arma 2 & 3.
You: Marathon is DOA

Me: I wouldn't bet on it. This genre is Star Trek.

Bungie: We're going to Star Trek Marathon.

(Marathon CCU go up)

You: Marathon is really popular now but Men_in_Boxes was wrong about Marathon becoming popular.

Legendary cope, my friend. Legendary.

Guilty: Marathon is DOA, unless they move away from extraction

Box men: No, PvP is king. They just need to refine it

Bungie: We're going to move away from extraction

(Marathon CCU goes up?? We don't know)

Guilty: See? Told you they had to move away from extraction

Box men: omg, bungie are a genius for discovering the concept of PvE and different game modes
Fixed

He posted a video of him using an out of bounds exploit to hide in the end portion of cryo(iirc it's called the compiler), and when another team beat it, which I guess is like the pinnacle of this game, they jumped out and ganked them and stole their loot. iirc it was said in this vid he's a bungie partnered player.

Can't people just play...Destiny? My god, its like packing up your trailer park home, moving one lot over, and pretending like you are about to live a brand new life.
They can just stop support for Destiny 2 and say "hey guys, its marathoning time now".

Heck, they can just straight up close down the Destiny games making sure no one can play them anymore, perks of live service and all that.

LOL. Well, that's a tactic in extraction games to begin with. If it's so bad all Bungie has to do it fix it in one of their Tuesday updates. That's on Bungie and their bad code.

I've been killed in COD endless times with my character's legs shown in killcam clipping through a wall while in prone. Some enemy saw it and shot me. Who cares. What's Activision going to do? Ban a guy showing he shot my leg through a wooden hut?

For sure, but in this case they held him to different standard for being a partnered streamer and banned him for a month. I think where it happened was the bigger issue.

Why the hell would you spend money just to play a tacked on PVE mode when Helldivers or any other horde shooter will do this 1000x better.

Any pve game imo is more attractive. Infact id go back and play destiny 1 all over again and love it than play anything marathon.

Whats funny is it's not even magical like destiny was with 3 unique classes all having unique abilities, being able to jump super high and slam down on enemies or float like a lock etc... Destiny had magic about it, marathon looks so bumbling and slow, weak, boring zzz, footage I watch is such a bore

Looks like Bungie is going to give it a real shot to turn it around.

I wish them luck, honestly. Seems they backed down from their initial stance and want to do some PvE content as well as making it more accessible.

It is a start. How FAST they can put out content and changes will be key, though.

It does feel a bit like "we made a half-assed release; join us as we release what should've been present in the first place" kinda deal.

I'm surprised Bungie haven't tried adding a fishing mini game to the list. They seem to be willing to throw anything at the wall in hope of getting something to stick. Such confidence in their craft and creation.

i doubt they want to. They have to.

They spent $200 million making a super niche divisive game mode with four maps. That was never going to work.

The crazy thing is when it comes to big purchases of any kind, the losses are actually more than whatever is finally stated or calculated.

Because people rarely factor in opportunity costs. Even if someone played ultra safe and dumped that money into a 3% guaranteed gov bond or term deposit at a bank, the person (or company) is losing out on this too.

Made worse when something is a loss. At least when someone misses out on 3%, as long as they are in the green they can at least say they are still up. But when something is losses, it's made worse if you tack on lost opps.

Never mind $200M+ for Marathon. Just think of the missed gains Sony could had gained if they avoided spending $3.6M on Bungie. And then all the operational losses since 2022 on top of it. Even at just 3%, that $3.6B could had gained Sony about $100M per year for 4 years.

9 pm completed hour CCU. Peaked reached at 12k at about 10:30 pm
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Today's peak at 13k is -75.3k or -85%

Today vs yesterday: 13k vs 12k (+1k or +8%)

Yesterday's low 3.7k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 4k

Thu vs Thu: 13k vs 15.2k (-2.2k or -14%). Much better than historic changes of -20%

Ratio method to estimate peaks and valleys
Mon-Thur 3.3:1. For example, a peak of 12k will have a low of 3.6k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

Steam Rankings
Daily Active Users: 151
Global Top Sellers: 229
Weekly Top Sellers: Unknown. Not on top 100
Top Rated Games: 6,146 (83.72%)

Sony messed up this gen so badly. They spent almost $4B on Bungie. That could have funded a lot of games.

It took them 6 years to make 3 maps, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Bungie is likely feeling the heat from Lin Tao and Totoki. Either they step up or they will soon be looking for another job.

The same happened to Bend, but they at least had a popular game to remaster and get some cash.
