The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

FUCKING Bethesda..... :? I click play and it goes back to the launcher. :/

Just highlight the game in your Steam library for Skyrim and do the cache and integrity stuff and it should work again....I had the same thing happen earlier today(I have zero mods).

So now we're trying to bypass official patches because Bethesda is so terrible that their patches actually make things worse.

Seriously, what the fuck?
If you don't a backup exe, try looking at the new exe and hitting properties, then version history. If you have a restore point it should predate to the exe before the patch. THen just copy it to the desktop or where ever.

Interestingly, if you replace it with the old .exe, Steam doesn't seem to download anything when you start the game even if auto-update is on (which, by the way, it seems to automatically revert to every time you quit the game).

The only way I could get it to re-download the patch was by verifying integrity of game cache.

I just said screw it and disabled auto updates for Skyrim. It worked all the same. I don't want to chance it.

So wait, before i rage quit this game into the trash-bin, how do i install this LAAfix and make it work? (yes, i have the latest pathc, unfortunately).
I already have the file/exe.

LAA is absolutely essential.

Fucking Bethesda could just make their own 64bit Skyrim version instead. This is 2011.

Without LAA I cannot use uGrids=9.

Well shit. I was right the first time. :P

Just tested it. Steam did NOT update for me with auto-update disabled for Skyrim when I started the game. I've reverted to the old .exe, patched it with LAA, and I can start it up in Steam just fine in Online Mode. Doesn't download anything.
Well that's bizarre but...one key thing. Did you update the game and THEN replace the .exe? If so, then that makes sense. Steam presumably won't scan all the files unless you asked it to verify file integrity. It will probably just say "Okay, the game has been updated to hidden version XYZ, no more updates needed now."

Yep, that's what first made me wonder about what the autoupdate setting actually did. I tried to disable it for Mirror's Edge when I was doing mapping/editor stuff with the Steam version, and it kept reverting. Fortunately Mirror's Edge was never patched as far as I recall.

Thank god I still had the old exe. Worse performance and having to go through the launcher every time? And people were excited that the game used steamworks. :lol

I find it hilarious that Bethesda releases their most stable PC game ever, and then proceeds to break it with their first patch (not counting the day 1.)

If you have the original .exe, use some LAA patcher (look on nexus) on it and then replace the current .exe with the patched original one. If you don't have the original, you can try to find it somewhere on the internet. Shouldn't be too hard.

Yeah, it's immensely stupid. Good thing it's revertible.

What they should do is just release a LAA'd exe as "patch 1.2", would probably fix more issues for more people than anything they'll do :P

I never had LAA and I did get a few crashes but nothing serious.

Don't see any issue with this. Can understand why others are annoyed though.

So, I did the large address aware patch that was posted in the OP. Is there any way to reverse this? I'm not home yet, but Steam is always running in the background so it probably already downloaded the patch. Am I just screwed for now?

Reverted to the LAA'd exe, quick traveled 20 times in a row all over the map, everything seems fine.

Close one.

If you used an LAA patcher that creates a backup, just patch that backup again (since it's a backup of the original unpatched exe) and replace the .exe. Otherwise you'll need to look online for the original .exe, shouldn't be too hard.

Just check the new exe in properties and look at the version history. If you have a restore point before this patch and game installation, you should be able to retrieve it.

So I would like some feedback on my new water update. My goal was to calm the water and reduce specularity. Anyone care to test and report back?

I.. don't think so.
Version history doesn't have older versions though.
With LAA the exe doesn't boot up, gives me an error 3.something.

What in the living fuck. I just started the game up and it auto-detected again, reverting my SkyrimPrefs to default. I had SkyrimPrefs - Copy backups, so not a problem right? Except the fucking backups are somehow now versions from 11/10/11 that aren't the actual backups.

lol. Anyone have an .ini they can share, for good rigs?

I can't figure out why they'd patch the steam wrapper. Isn't the cracked version already out there?

That's the joke!

:/

Luckily I was able to use my restore point exe from the 18th so crisis averted. As I said, performance is better by 3-5fps with LAA.

Sure, no uGrids shenanigans though.

Thanks Durante. It's actually just SkyrimPrefs for whatever reason. My Skyrim.ini backup is still intact.

How could it possibly have modified config backups? I've never seen anything like that.

I'll give it a shot!
Ok, from what I've seen, it looks nice and calm. Obviously the cut to rock/land is still not great but it looks fine to me as a whole.

Nice work man!

edit: it may be a bit too clear (from the lakes I've seen). Not really an issue. Just preference.

edit 2: actually it's not too clear. It seems a bit jello like but that's an issue with natural Skyrim water too

Where are you seeing reports of massive improvements? Almost everyone in that thread is saying little to no noticeable improvement.

A quick test reveals RAGE is working perfectly, which is the first time since the 11.10P2's for me, so no need to add the atioglxx.dll from an older set.

Skyrim running really well, maybe slightly better even, but its not easy to say, but a quickish run around in a dungeon and outdoors saw a constant and unflinching 60fps... the only thing I noticed was some flickering in the steaming pools, from a distance, but I'm not sure if its the driver or the water mod I'm running, so I need to check that out.

This is the first set from Marthand that I will not be removing straight away... so thanks.

PLEASE run the game with current drivers before so you can see if there is an actual change using the same save, i dont want to install them if its just placebo :(, thanks

I didn't run a bench but performance was definitely better. I would say, and you will have to take my word on this from starring at locations A LOT, I went up anywhere from 2-18fps depending on location. Only 1 area on the brige overlooking Riverwood gave me the same fps. Everything else was definitely smoother. I should have tested the Whiterun city view. i would say these are the best driver for Skyrim as of today.

single card or Crossfire?
wondering if I should install them with my ati 4890.

so would it be ok to ignore using the LAA fix at this point if we're updating the drivers?
