Kinda wish Safari had the same gesture feature that Safari on Mac has, where you can swipe back in your browsing history.

Might be a RAM issue on iPad tho, I dunno.

not sure if it's still free, but I just finished operation Ajax and man, what a great way to get a history lesson. get it if you haven't yet.

friend didn't even want any cash with the trade? holy hell

Nope. She's a loaded college student who's mom and dad pay for everything and doesn't understand the value of a dollar.

I don't feel bad. Her parents bought her a new BMW while I'm stuck in my '94 Accord.

$199 iPad 2 for me!

ah, OK. that puts things in perspective.

It's like if I drop a penny on the ground by accident. I'm not picking it up

That's a damn good trade.

Meanwhile, I wonder if Apple will pricematch tomorrow if I bought something today? Their return policy seems to say they would but it's a little unclear...

It's still free... Grab it while you can. This is the first motion graphic novel to really show the potential of the medium.

Hopefully it'll be a success and push digital comics to follow suit into motion effects. This is the future of digital comic storytelling, IMO.

definitely. though it's crazy to think they spent 4 years on it. with the cash that marvel and DC have, I’m assuming dev time would be a lot less.

Man you found a gold mine, you should smash and get her pregnants while you can./

Friend wanted a Kindle Fire, I wanted an iPad 2. We traded. I think I won.

Now to read up on iOS. First device on this OS.

haha I did the same with a rich girl in high school. I had a £50 MP3 player I got from the states she wanted so I swapped it for her £250 PSP.

Blink more?
Try bringing the iPad up to a comfortable angle instead of staring down at it in your lap.
Maybe turn on black on white mode in Settings>General>Accessibility

What's your list of requirements that will make you upgrade to the next iPad?
Personally I want 1gb of ram, a quad core processor and the retina display. If it doesn't have at least two those I won't be upgrading from the iPad 2.

I've had an iPad for about 2 days now, and I'm just getting terrible headaches from using it, even during short periods of time. I tried setting the brightness all the way down, but that didn't seem to help.

I'm well aware of eye fatigue and all that, but I've never had this problem before. I sit in front of an LCD monitor for hours each day, use smart phones, etc. without any issue.

Any suggestions?

Get better eye balls?

Kidding. In all honesty, I'm not really sure. Is it the screen brightness? You turned it all the way down, so that shouldn't be an issue. How close are you holding the iPad to your face?

might be an obvious point but please make sure you aren’t reading the ipad in completely dark rooms just because it has a backlight

keep a light on like you would reading a book.

if you have good ambient light and you’e still having issues, I’m not sure what it might be. sorry.

If you're using it in a well lit room, is the brightness too low? Perhaps your eyes are straining to see it properly because of the brightness?

You're already dead.

Yea, I'm not sure what the problem is. As I said, I never had this problem with LCD/LED displays before. I'm using it in the same well-lit room as my computer, and keeping it roughly the same distance away as my monitor. And I don't use it for long periods of time either (I have an ebook reader for marathon novel sessions).

I got a good deal on the iPad, and I can see myself enjoying it a lot if I can get past this issue.
Any glare/reflection issues that might be messing with your eyes? Otherwise is the text size comfortable?

Yeah this is a good point, going too low would mess your eyes in other ways beyond just the light level (like reflections become more noticeable too).

I have an iPad 1. Would it be crazy to buy an iPad 2 right now (apple have some middling discounts today), considering the iPad 3 is 3 months away? I mostly use it for games, and I've never noticed a lack of pixels so retina wouldn't be a killer feature for me particularly. And if it goes retina I'm concerned about lack of grunt pushing that many pixels.

so, yay/nay for an iPad 2?

Why would they release a product with a resolution that the hardware couldn't handle?

ok, phrased badly.

Ipad 2 has a much faster CPU and GPU. If they release a retina iPad 3, my expectation is that the CPU/GPU is not likely to scale accordingly. They'd need a 4x GPU just to stand still in terms of performance for some games.

Well, the iPad 1 to iPad 2 GPU speed increase was 7x, so....

The iPad 2 can already handle a filtrate 4x larger than its screen. Of course games would suffer at that resolution with the iPad 2 hardware, but they've had a full year to make it much faster.

I own both ipad - 1+2. Its not really worth it outside of smoothness in use. I got ipad2 for my reading/pdf refresh. Games; outside of a small handfull, the extra grunt in AA+graphics bump, isnt really worth it. wait for 3.

that said, I'm not going to buy ipad 3. I will get ipad4.

and I think.... the resolution nonsense is just rabid fanboy nonsense. Retinapad? lol no way you're going to get a chip that will drive graphics on a panel that size. and not to mention the impact on battery life

This will be a funny post in the near future.

Apple's software has been ready for this jump for the last year:

As I understand it, it wouldn't take as much processor muscle to use pixel doubling to achieve the 2048 x 1536 resolution, which is why they're choosing that exact resolution (i.e. twice the current 1024 × 768 res).

Don't Xbox & PS3 games do that all the time? Internally render at a lower resolution that doesn't kill the cpu and then pixel interpolate to 1080p or whatever. It's a pretty common technique.

I'm sure for print/media consumption it'll be fantastic, just not sure for games. Feels like it'll need to be iPad 4 to get an actual performance increase, with the natural performance increase this time being absorbed by the higher res.

Interesting to hear that there aren't that many games that take advantage of the iPad 2's increased power. So might try and hang on until next year.

WSJ: Sharp to supply Apple with LCDs for iPad 3, already supplying iPhone screens
This is something we’ve heard before from analysts, but the Wall Street Journal is now saying that Apple has tapped Sharp to supply the LCD displays for the next version of the iPad. This new iPad is expected to launch early next year, with dates from all the way to the beginning of the year to March being floated around. This new iPad is rumored to include a Retina Display – the super clear screen technology that was pioneered in the iPhone 4, as well as a faster processor. Earlier this year, reports claimed that Apple struck a billion dollar deal with Sharp to supply displays for Apple products. The WSJ says:

The person also said Apple is also investing in facilities at Sharp’s panel manufacturing factories in Japan, without specifying the amount being invested, highlighting Apple’s plans to work with multiple component makers to ensure that it can secure enough parts to make its popular iPhones and iPads. Osaka-based Sharp makes liquid crystal displays, which are widely used in tablets, smartphones and flat-screen televisions. Sharp already supplies LCD panels for Apple’s iPhone smartphones, according to the person. The company will be supplying panels for the next iPhone, which is also expected to launch sometime next year, the person added.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the WSJ report is that they claim Sharp will not only supply LCDs for the sixth-generation iPhone, but is already powering the display of current iPhones like the 4S and maybe the slightly updated 8GB iPhone 4. The next iPhone is already rumored to pack a 4 inch display and an aluminum casing, both of which are rumors we’ve heard before. The WSJ previously said this iPhone 6 would be a dramatically new design and would introduce some new way of charging the iPhone.

It seems Wall Street Journal too, is reporting Sharp to be the ones behind the screen for iPad 3.

I would wait, in fact I'm holding out these remaining four months or so for the iPad 3. Now that I have waited this long, I ought to stick it out.
On the other side, I'm considering buying the iPad 2 as a Christmas present for one of my family members.

Question about putting videos onto the iPad:

Is there any way to do this without the use of iTunes? I'm on a new computer and I don't want to lose all my photos if I synced it with this computer, or is there a way to keep my photos and put videos onto my iPad through iTunes?

Try FileBrowser or FilesConnect, two apps that let you wirelessly browse a computer or network-attached storage. You can then copy the file over wifi and use the "Open In" function to transfer it to the desired app.

I never use iTunes for putting media files onto the iPad.

As for streaming the video directly, try BuzzPlayer HD. Unlike AirVideo, it doesn't require any software running on a host computer (or a host computer at all, you can stream from a NAS). It plays all format videos, locally or streaming.

i've held off on buying an ipad since it was originally announced. it never appealed to me as i was always hoping for something more prior to the announcement. but the more i play with them the more i want one. plus, i told myself ipad 3 would be when i finally dive in, no matter what the specs/features are, but i am finding myself REALLY wanting one now.

I have waited this long, should i continue to wait for 3's release or buy a 2 now and flip it when 3 comes out?

Won't give you advice (I caved and got one last month), but the Apple online store has them at $45 off today.

there are apps that can download videos from your local network and play them - e.g. 'air video'

I have Air Video but don't you need to be connected to wifi to watch those videos? I wanted to put some videos on it to watch on a plane as I won't be connected to a network.

I also have AVMediaPlayer but I've heard it drains batteries more than just using the standard video app.
