GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I'd say the top things for me from best to worst

1) USB Loading

I want to add how convenient it is when travelling. With Airlines' luggage restrictions tighter than ever, having your entire Wii collection on a little 1/2 Pound USB hard drive (if even that heavy) is a HUGE space/weight saver. and saved me from paying 50 dollars for a second bag/overweight

2) Various homebrew.

Mostly emulators (which I think are great if you want to play rom hacks, fan translations of Japanese titles also unlikely to be released officially, or the revered licensed titles that are EXTREMELY unlikely to ever be released on Wii VC like Sunsoft Batman or Capcom's Duck Tales) but there are a few useful apps out there. There's a straightforward Balance Board app that lets you use it like a scale. And Wii MC was great to play media files if ou don't have a PS3 or other media device.

3) Brawl Mods

If you still like playing Brawl, it's practically become like a PC FPS in terms of easy customizable mods.

My Skyward Sword disc did install a quick update. Will it still be safe to do Letterbomb in the future? My drive might die on me so I may need to back up to USB.

I got an interesting thought - would it be possible to play your backup GameCube images on the new Wii model off an external HDD, or did they really disable that functionality altogether?
Though of course it'd be pretty useless since they removed all the GCN ports...

You can't play GameCube games on any Wii off of a HDD, so I'm guessing the answer would be no.

Hi everybody

It's been a loooooooooooooong time since my last (probably first) Wii homebrew install. Now I bought Legend of Zelda SS and I can't play it because my Wii isn't updated.

I saw a lot of things to do, is there a roadmap of all the things i have to do in order to update?

My firmware version is 4.1E (at least is what I see on Wii settings menu), I only have IOS249 but I don't know how to verify the status of the homebrew installed on my Wii

Any suggestion/question in order to solve my problems is well accepted

thank you very much!

Go through the GWHT from the HBC steps onward updating everything. Treat everything except the HBC as a new install if you like. The new installation instructions work regardless of what you have or haven't installed before.

i have to say i followed the GAF tutorial religiously when i hacked my Wii and Zelda SS worked on the first try without even asking me to update anything.

gg :)

okay, updating my cios files to dx2 and such did the trick, thanks clipper!

only remaining issue is a minor one - im using the newest version of usb loader GX, works great (i can play zelda off the HDD, woo hoo!) but when i go to install the channel for it via the wad file, i get error 1022. i put the files on the SD where it told me, any idea why this might be happening?

Hey guys. I'm getting ready to hack my Wii so I can play Xenoblade. All I want to do though is remove the region lock so I can play a physical copy of the game. Is there a preferable method to the ones that are in the OP? I remember reading an article that mentioned this could all be achieved with Letterbomb? I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to this stuff, and I just want to make sure I don't break my Wii in the process :(

EDIT: Also, is a 4GB SD card big enough for the hack?

I starting to think my HDD is starting to go out (was making a clicking sound when I tried to play Zelda about an hour ago), so I'm currently in the process of backing everything up (don't feel like ripping them all again).

Here's my question, since I'm going to be starting over with a blank drive, what's the best file system to use. My current drive was still using WBFS (never had a problem with it).

I'm thinking about going with ntfs, but I don't know if Cfg USB loader will write to NTFS drives.

What's considered to be the best file system to use with CGF loader?

This is a weird thread that the information is actually in the second post rather than the OP. Click the tutorial there (or just scroll up to Mario above as I already linked it on this page too) and you'll find all the instructions you need and options open to you.

FAT32 has the best compatibility with other apps (as some only support FAT, like the HBC), while NTFS allows you to store larger files on the drive as well and also allows you to rip directly to .iso if you want to use the same drive for Dolphin stuff. Use those differences to define your choice (or partition the drive and do both if you like). Cfg works with both FAT32 and NTFS, just make sure you add the configuration options that are mentioned in the tutorial if you want to do NTFS.

Maybe it really is time to abandon this thread and start a new one.

Just got Zelda in the mail today and it asked me to update even though I was on 4.3u with d2x. It still asked me to update even after I followed everything on Clipper's guide to update everything to the latest version. I ran the update on the disc channel anyway and the game works fine. I just found it odd that it was still asking me to update. I do have one question though. This week turned out to be a busy week for my Wii and one thing I noticed was that when I ran the download covers option I noticed HQ covers started to download on some of the games I own. Setting the option in CFG to HQ doesn't seem to make anything look better I was wondering if I was doing something wrong.

My setup uses CFG 70 (release)
CFG 2011 v2 theme

If any of that matter.

Just wondering what the deal is with HQ covers.

It will ask you to update as they made a few minor changes to some IOSes without updating the firmware. They used to do it all the time, but it's been a while since we had such an IOS-only update, so it's understandable that it might confuse.

As for HQ covers, they are only viewable when you select the game, then use the thing at the bottom left to switch to those covers (HQ and RGB) and view them.

Yep. HQ covers is just that "High Quality"versions of the full covers. (i.e. covers at a higher resolution than the "regular full covers").

HQ (usually): 1024 x 680
Full (regular): 512 x 340

When Cfg looks for covers in Wii/GameTDB; if there's an HQ cover available it downloads that. If there's not, but there's a regular one; it downloads that one.

Of course, at a higher-res you can see some more details in images and text; but since the resolution of the Wii is 640 x 480 no matter what; difference in not that...noticeable unless you play on a big screen and zoom each cover...

...or something like that. :p

Quick question, I'm about to get into the whole HDD install thing later.

I have a launch Wii, and it has that fault where it can't read dual layered games (Smash Bros. and Metroid Prime Trilogy as far as I know). I'm guessing I won't be able to rip my copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy with my Wii but if I rip it on a friend's Wii will I be able to play it on mine from the hard drive?

Will Skyward Sword launch ok on 4.2E? I can see someone needed help getting it working on 4.1E but just checking to see if mine is good to go or if I need to update (been out of the wii homebrew scene for a long time now so just trying to wrap my head around it all... again!).

Sorry to be a pain requesting more SS advice but I feel kinda lost. Thanks.

Yes, that would work.

It should work, I think. Provided your homebrew setup is up to date. Just do all the upgrade steps on the tutorial pages if you are unsure, as once you've done those it's even safe to update the firmware.

...so error 1022 when installing wads isnt a common thing? i just wanted to install the USB loader GX channel, so instead of clicking homebrew, then gx, then load, then zelda, then load, then calibrate motion+, then click a, then a again, then my account and a, then play the game, i can skip like the first 2 steps.

Thank you much! That helped tremendously and I was able to get all my questions answered.

Most people here use CFG USB Loader since that's what covered in the tutorial. So you might have to look elsewhere for help with your particular issue.

I want to get a new Wii since mine is crapping out hardcore and I wouldn't have faith in it even if I paid the $75 (closer to $90 with shipping) to get it fixed. Is it possible to swap the entire fricking content of the system to an entirely new system? Like, VC, channels, WiiWare? Being able to use the same shop account would be a bonus.

I might be asking for a lot, but I'm pretty sick of my Wii breaking down.

Only Nintendo can do that. You have to contact them directly with information about both Wiis.

Just wanted to chime in here, got my new GCN innards-less Blue Wii all set up with HBC and Cfg USB Loader.

Have had an old launch system sitting here dead for about a year, finally caved at the $99 chance for a shiny new one instead of getting the old repaired.

No real problems at all. I just seemed to have to use the NUS Downloader to grab the .wad in the IOS236 step, so I went ahead and used it at each point I needed a .wad file.

Looking forward to playing titles that I have had to miss, like SMG2 or DKCR and others, and of course LoZ:SS.
Soon.

:/ I did email about it and they said it wasn't possible. I assume it's only possible if you hassle them on the phone for like an hour and seriously I'm not going to do that.

Dawn, I really thought it would be possible. Just copy over all the data...

You could perhaps set up NAND emulation to emulate your old NAND on the new Wii. I don't know if you can still use the Wii Shop if you are doing that, but it would allow you to use your current purchases, provided your old Wii is able to make a BootMii backup without issue.

Unfortunately, I still haven't gotten round to learning the ins and outs of NAND emulation, so I can't give you a simple tutorial.

Ok, I updated my roommates Wii from 4.0U to 4.3U using the "Update your Wii" updae path on the GAF Wii Homebrew site. Used the DOP Mii WB firmware update procedure (in addition to updating IOS236, dx, and Hermes IOS222/223 and StartPatch). Now Zelda: SS shows up on the Disc Channel, but it goes into a black screen after clicking Start. Other Wii games work alright, and Skyward Sword worked on my Homebrewed 4.2U Wii just fine (Got the "Thank You for your Purchase" screen; WTF?! O_o )

What am I possibly missing here?

What's the region of the game? This is a retail disc, right? If the same region, I suggest you disable any Start Patch update blocking and use the update on the disc to update as it's possible the IOS the game uses was not updated by Dop-Mii properly.

Averted, I looked at earlier posts and saw you can allow the disc to update (granted certain things were patched). It's now working! Thanks anyway Clipper!

Is there a specific page that shows how to rip my games so I can play them on dolphin? Say I want to play Skyward Sword. My motherboard already has bluetooth support so I just need to buy a wireless sensor bar. Then somehow I need to load my wii game into the computer? I don't want to mod my wii if I don't have to. No idea if that is part of it. It's all new to me. I just want to play skyward sword in hd.

There are only two ways as far as I know:
-Modding your Wii, so you can rip the games to a USB and use that USB in your computer
-Buy some specific LG DVD Drives that are really hard to find and rare and use that to rip them.

If anything, the Wii-way is obviously cheaper one since you already have one. If you follows Clipper's awesome tutorial, you'll mod it in a matter of minutes, safely and can still use it for anything "official"; while have the "homebrew perks" like region-free gaming, homebrew/multimedia apps, etc.

Is there a way to convert save files? Now that Xenoblade is coming to America, I'd like to be able to convert my save file for the game, if I'm still playing it in April.

You mean between PAL and NTSC? I doubt it, although it's an area I havent researched that much.

Just dropping a "thank you" in this thread. My old launch Wii makes this terrible noise when spinning a disc, the games still play fine but the noise is very irritating. I had previously set up the homebrew channel to use Gekko for playing my import Gamecube games but now I've finally set up the USB loader and am now playing Skyward sword in perfect silence.

Are there any downsides to playing off of a USB stick instead of a USB hard drive? Everything seems great.

It should be possible. In the Gamecube days all you did was change the region flag in the header and hoped it worked. It worked for some games like Tales of Symphonia, Pokemon Box Ruby & Sapphire and Animal Crossing.

Its kind of similar with the Wii except you're renaming a directory (or replacing and renaming a few files in a directory) but you have to work from unencrypted otherwise it won't copy back.

I made a post on applying the theory to Wii games in the Xenoblade thread. It is here.*. It hinges on the fact I remember someone got a two hundred and something hour Japanese save over to the European version where the time displayed as it should (meaning the glitch in the Japanese version was not logging time but rather displaying it)

But yeah wait for US Xeonblade to come out as you can't test it has worked before then.

*-GAF search didn't find, nor did google...its post 1337 too so I guess its easy to remember

someone help me please...

I put hb channel on my wii a long time ago and never messed with it. I need to get the internet channel and netflix on my wii but I cant connect to the shop. I think I have it set to block updates from N so I guess I need to update stuff. what should I do first? asking so I dont screw something up. heres what I have:

wii menu 4.2U
brew channel 1.0.8
ios v21.29
cios 222 installer v4
dop-mii v12
gecko os 1.07b
startpatch v4.2.6U
ftpii
truncha bug restorer 1.12
atdm v6
ios249 2.3
wii system channels updater v0.23

also I cant play black ops on this wii, been using my sisters, obviously I need to update it.

So guys I recently purchased FIFA 12 and ripped it to my hard drive, the games runs fine except for one small problem, everytime I want to change modes it freezes with that horrible beeping noise, let me explain again, when I'm playing in some mode (doesn't matter which one) and I want to return to the main menu it freezes.

When I play it from the disc it works fine though, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the CFG loader. As you might remember I recently modded my Wii by following Clipper's tutorial so everything is up to date and it's the only game that has any problem when running from the hard drive.

Any ideas?
