Haven't tried it, but supposedly CorsixTH is a nice substitute.

I downloaded it a few months ago, the project was still far from complete.
But I hope they'll finish it, it looks great.

So, besides Syndicate (can't happen until after the crappy new game is released) and System Shock (probably can't happen ever :( ) what significant EA games are we still waiting for? Ultima 7, certainly. Quite a few older Maxis titles. Theme Park.

Populous 2 and New Beginning?

You know, at this point, I'm really not feeling these EA classics that they've been releasing. The only ones I really liked so far were Crusader No Remorse and Alpha Centauri, both games I've already had nostalgia for. At this point I just want to see more Westwood games. Even though I already have all the C&C games, I'd love to have a one click installer for these from GOG. And Dune 2000... loved that game. More maxis titles would be nice too.

But at this point, I'd love to see Microsoft have a presence on GOG, as unlikely as that may be.

Obviously what defines significant will vary (and I would consider Theme Park to be NOT significant, IMO the interface and experience is vastly inferior to Theme Hospital), but:

The Immortal
Desert/Jungle/Urban/Nuclear Strike (and Future Cop LAPD)
Clive Barker's Undying (outstanding game up until right before the end)
Theme Hospital
Populous 2/3
Wing Commander 4, 5, and Privateer 2
Black & White (fully patched may be good?)
Bioforge
Strike/Pacific Commander
Blade Runner
Legend of Kyrandia 1-3
Dune RTS games
Gettysburg!
Sim Golf
U8/9 (IMO 9 got unfairly punished for not living up to expectations of a 3D U7. It was fairly punished for being a buggy wreck but later patches allowed me to get to right before the endgame... when a scripting bug prevented me from finishing. Hopefully a fan patch can fix it because exploring the world was fun).

There are also other deep catalog games, particularly from the Atari ST days, that would be nice to see, but I'd really hope for serious bundling or GOG finally implementing that lower price point they talked about so long ago.

Early Need for Speeds (could licensing be an issue?), The Bard's Tale, Worlds of Ultima (please!), Data discs

Info from GOG forum (and has since confirmed by a staff):

From Polish resources (gamezilla.pl facebook :D) I have known that another exclusive game is coming on GoG.

Also, newer titles will be present in gog.com catalogue (from higher prices)

If I know something more, ill let you know, because the conference is still going.
In 2012 we may expect two new games from CDP Red (smaller titles) and for 2014 and 2015 two AAA+ titles

According to a staff, an official press release will be coming later today.

New release: Populous 2

I managed to completely miss 2. I've played 1 and The Beginning, but never touched 2. The only thing I've really picked up is that it's heavy on Greek mythology and stylistically quite similar to the first game.

On that note, since it's just crossed my mind: Who owns the rights to Powermonger? That's another game of that ilk of that era I never really tried.

Woah, new thread ? Or do we wait for the PR ?

Dunno. What do you think? I never made a new thread. :|

An update from GOG forum: A strategic roadmap of CDProjekt group (in Polish)

Here's a partial translation by a member (bazilisek):

GOG.com Action Plan for 2012
• Signing an agreement to offer older games to two, new, leading publishers of games.
• Entry into a new segment - an introduction to the first offer newer games (at least 20 titles) offered at prices ranging from 13.99 to 16.99 USD.
• The establishment of direct cooperation with the ambitious independent game developers and publishers.
The first premiere of a new title created by well-known foreign studio. The game will be sold on a temporary basis exclusively in the digital distribution channel, which is available on GOG.com before the advent of the competitors offer.

Digital distribution of games is one of the youngest and most dynamic segments in our industry. Because of this specificity, and still the changes are precisely the activities planned for the end of 2013. For the years 2014 and 2015 assume the broad lines of development, which will detail carefully watching the development of the market. As in the case of the Polish distribution business, which looks beyond the specific plans for 2012 years will be gradually revealed. This is to protect the competitive position of GOG.com. Given the above, have set for the company's goal at the end of 2013.

GOG.com goal at the end of 2013
Achieving the second position in the world independent platform for PC games digital distribution offers products in all price categories.
Further aggressive business growth in the years 2012 and 2013 at 100% year on year.
We want to achieve continuing our successful strategy by which GOG.com has become in three years the number one in the electronic distribution of classic PC games. In particular:
• We will continuously focus on our core values, with an emphasis on honesty, integrity and fair treatment of players, so that GOG.com is recognized as the most friendly digital distribution platform.
• We will work with the world's leading publishers and studios make up the best games, collectively building a new quality of digital distribution to customers.

Sounds great!
I wonder if they will sell new games under the good old games moniker or use a different one.
they could just add a gng.com reskin of the existing site, but have the same library on both versions. hehe

I see it being somewhat similar to Netflix thinking it would be smart splitting to Qwikster. GOG should just keep building a single brand, even if the ratio of newer titles increases a bit, as long as the newer titles are DRM-free of course.

Is Populous 2 any good? I've only played the first one and that 3d reboot thingy from a few (many?) years back.

I never played the Crusader games, are they worth it? They seemed somewhat cool back then (though magazines just covered the console versions iirc)... I see screenshots with NPCs and stuff, are they adventure-ish on top of the action? Like, top down Deus Ex? Which one is the best and why? Can you play them with a gamepad?

Great release, now both of the Crusader games are available again. Theme Hospital next please! :) Hope these EA releases go straight through to the end of the year, and GOG gets both publishers they're going after early on in 2012 so they can keep the bar high for next year.

Tank controls + awful aiming + jumping & puzzles for a lot of frustrations, but once/if you get past the controls, they're awesome games.

Oooh, now here's a poser. I have my christmas list through from my parents, and one of the items on it is Myst: Masterpiece Edition. I remember Mum & Dad liking that somewhat (After I'd finished the game on the Saturn, we had one evening with a bunch of people around the telly; me controlling it and offering hints, but not guiding them too much, as they discussed and contributed to puzzle solutions.)

I'd love to get it for them. However, it's an Amazon wishlist, and so it's a disc copy; relatively pricey, at that. I could pick it up much cheaper at GoG.

They're not inherently opposed to digital download of titles - Mum's done it with a few Hidden Object games recently - but it's awfully big, and they're on some quite stringently metered internet. Still, it'd be nice to get them using GoG, and I think I could introduce them to some other titles they may like (I suspect Broken Sword would go down well)

So two problems spring to mind: Firstly, how do I gift it from GoG and still make it something nice for them to unwrap on Christmas Day, and secondly, how do I actually *get* the data to them without overwhelming their internet connection?

The thing that's bothering me the most is that the best solution I can think of is to gift it to them on GoG and then give them a burnt DVD with the game on it. But while that's entirely *morally* reasonable, it *looks* incredibly shifty.

Any thoughts?

I think this is probably your best bet:

1) Setup an account on GOG for them and buy/gift the game to them.

2) Download the game file yourself and either burn to a DVD or move to a thumbdrive.

3) Wrap and present DVD/Thumbdrive as gift, with login credentials for the website in a nice card, or something.

Did you like the first one? P2 is basically that with more gameplay variety and more of a campaign. I'd argue that P2 renders P1 pointless, and was surprised that P1 wasn't sold with P2.

It's hard to answer without nostalgia creeping (and although I bought No Remorse I haven't played it since way back when) in but:

Worth it: probably. They were good action games when that kind of action game was still in vogue, so it should hold up. Keep in mind that the game was impressive at the time for the sprite animation and environment destruction, but even a middling game now in 3D (like the Raven X-Men games from the PS2) would look far better.

NPCs, Deus Ex: No. Both games (I think) had a hub where you talked to people in the resistance and got your next mission. I think you bought new weapons there, too (or at least got them there). There isn't any decision-making, though.

Gamepad: I doubt natively but possibly with something like xpadder. Check GOG forums for that. I don't know if it would work to well, though, as IIRC the aiming is performed with the mouse.

Which one: Like most Origin games story is important so start at the beginning. No Regret is almost an expansion pack (and I think it was sold for slightly cheaper than a new retail game when it came out) and does not contain notable gameplay enhancements.

I believe that you can aim with the keyboard but it doesn't work very well. Should be able to get Xpadder working, I just don't think it'll be that great.

Without fully going through the game again, I can't say that it's one of those timeless releases but it sure is nice to try it out again. In any case, it still controls far better than Little Big Planet which made me want to die.

Oh, if it was mouse aiming then that's great, I assumed it's real old style, just shooting to the direction you face, that's why I asked that. Might get after Lands of Lore.

Damn, beat me to it: Leftfield, but *AWESOME*

Is there any link between Starflight and The Bard's Tale? It may just be coincidence, but that windowed engine looks very similar.

Starflight, now there's a blast from the past. I vaguely remember playing these when they came out, but could never recall what they were called until now (kept confusing them with Star Control 1, but I knew that wasn't right). I'm having trouble placing what they were like besides landing on planets and trying to get cargo without dying which wasn't easy, but the game was pretty entertaining at the time.

NEW RELEASE: The complete Ultima 7

Ultima 7: The Black Gate
Ultima 7: Forge of Virtue
Ultima 7 pt 2: Serpent's Isle
Ultima 7 pt 2: The Silver Seed

*FINALLY* some expansion packs for an EA title.

(Small aside: Have *any* EA games hit the $10 pricepoint, yet? I was kinda expecting this one to do so, but no, it's still $6)
