See FINAL FANTASY XIII-2's new combat features in action

Today we are releasing the first in a series of new gameplay videos which show off the various new features found in FINAL FANTASY XIII-2. This first video, entitled "Enhanced Battle System", demonstrates the game's active time battle system and its improvements over that found in FINAL FANTASY XIII.

You'll see examples of the instant paradigm shift system, as well as the new cinematic action scenes that can be found in the game. Check out the video over at IGN or, if you're afraid of leaving the Square Enix Blog, pop back tomorrow to find it here ready and waiting to be watched.

That looked the same but now with "cinematic action."

I guess they forgot to speak about the biggest changes: changing leader, choosing who your allies target, blood damage forcing you to switch paradigms, monsters' big role in the battle system ect.

I was intially sore about the whole monster party thing but man, I did enjoy FF13's combat once it got rollin'. Good to see it still looks enjoyable.

I see they're still using the same monster designs. I hope they have more variety in this game. The battle system looks even better.

Those are huge changes that remedy pretty much every problem I had with FF13's battle system. Are there examples of that in this video I'm not seeing because of the foreign language?

Yea, I was hoping to see some of that in action, especially the switching leaders part. This is just regular XIII + QTEs.

Those things are pretty much already confirmed by quite some time already ;)

Actually it's not just the battle system that they changed by listening to the players' feedback, it's pratically everything else too. Pretty exciting.

Yeah, but I don't care about the game. The main characters annoy the hell out of me, so I haven't been paying attention to it. I'd heard about the leader switching but nothing else. Those are the kinds of things I would like to see in order to convince me that the gameplay isn't as bad as Serah and Noel's designs and voice acting.

As someone who actually enjoyed FFXIII enough to Platinum (although the last few hours of grinding made me sad) I'm over-hyped for FFXIII-2 now.

You should not be concerned about this considering that FFXIII-2 it's the first main title in the series to feature visible equipment ingame and during the cutscenes; maybe you'll find a design fitting your taste here and there. Also I forgot to mention it before but now when your leader dies the game is not over, it switches automatically to the next party member instead.

Did they show off blood damage or the customization system?

You should not expect anything from this video, it's just a fast review of some elements already present in XIII without going much further into details. Pretty unuseful imho.

Really?! I did not know that, but it's so refreshing. I've always wanted this in FF games.

Perfo-- I asked this in the other thread, but...

Does anyone know if you can still ATB-cancel in this? The player for this trailer was working too slowly and didn't bother to Optima Shift at the appropriate times to refill the ATB gauge. I thought ATB-cancelling was a great tactic to use in the later missions, so I'm kind of hoping that they keep it here.

...yes... this is important... :lol

The Assassin's Creed outfit is a start. Now just need something comparable for Serah. Like, say, a Lightning skin. :P

There is this one while you wait :D

@dark_schala: can't help sorry, I don't know about that. You should ask someone that got his hands on the DEMO before.

I hope QTE won't be too much invasive.
I don't mind them in general but they tend to distract me a lot from the action that is going on in the background, and in a FF game I want to focus as much as I can on the visuals.

Ah, no worries. :)

I have to wonder if SE is ever going to release a (free) demo for this sooner or later. I want to play with the attack animation speeds. >.>

Oh crap...Snow doesn't have a lifebar. Invincible guest characters confirmed?

This also means we probably won't be able to save edit to be able to play as him either like we could in ff13...FFFFF..

This.
They should've showcased these elements.
...and this is the first I've read about blood damage; what exactly are it's major drawbacks?

blood damage; what exactly are it's major drawbacks?

XIII-2 has the concept of "Blood Damage." Each time you're hit with blood damage, you lose a portion of your max HP. In the first FFXIII, if you had a healer in your party you could recover from damage without trouble. But in XIII-2, you can't recover from blood damage, so you have to defeat enemies quickly.

Hmm what (J)RPGs had a concept similar to this?
Also let's say your max HP is 500 and you got enough blood damage that your health in battle drops to 400 HP; when the battle is over does your health return to 500?

Of course, everything is back to zero after the battle. The point is that through this new gimmick players can't fight normal battles with an Healer constantly present in the lines, because in this way they don't eliminate enemies fast enough and risk that their max hp gets so low they get wiped out in few turns. They invite you in changing paradigms way more frequently than in the previous game. You can't just waste a chance to attack with an healer filling one slot of yours.

Hmm that's an interesting concept. Thing is back in FF13 there were segments/chapters in the game where I NEEDED to play through with a healer in my main paradigm.
I really hope enemies can be defeated quickly using only offensive paradigms. This would also be made easier if Sabetour is present early in the game.

I welcome all these changes. do you still lose if the leader dies though?

praise the ff lords

I've asked this several times, but never got an answer, or maybe it's still not known. But how do you require new weapons? Have they even said? I know you have like 4 accessory slots, but don't know about weapons.

If its like XIII, I'll be upset. That's one of the things that needs changed.

I was told it was a bug by a Square representative when I went to NYCC, but it was still in there. This was also the E3 build though, so it might have been changed since.
