The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

I'm downloading now. I swear they should stop putting 2-7% in the release notes as there are plenty that are already on 11.11a or b. They better get CF fixed at least.

yeah, that should be their priority at this point. its hard to tell if a game is running 2% better when you are at 60 or less fps

UPDATE: Well, its not worse, maybe a frame or so faster but nothing really noticeable om my 5870. hope the crossfire is helped

BTW, this should be in the Steam base of knowledge. It should work for you btw unless Beth did something deeper. If that doesn't even work, you could try restoring your older exe. But the cache thing has to be in everyone's mind. It basically grabs any missing files instead of making you re DL the entire thing.
Totally worked for me. I had no idea about this but it's handy to know just in case this ever happens again or for another game.

I got my first few CTD's today, and it was right after I changed the default ugrid to 7, based of the guide. Needless to say I've had NO stability issues with any other tweaks or mods or anything, but now that i've been playing with the modified ugrids I've experienced 3 CTD's in a 3 hour span. Switched back to normal ugrids and all the load screen and title screen turned red! very strange. Fixed that by resetting the ini files, but then right after the game wouldn't even start! literally an error right away.

uninstalled, then reinstalled the game, put back everything how i had it before ugrid tweaks, and running perfectly stable again.

Anyone notice the snow in this game looks awful? I mean when there's snow covering something up like stone or something... it looks like it's just painted on.

Absolutely. There's an earlier post in this thread about it too. It makes me laugh and cringe that they would make it look like that.

Also, Beth Blog updated, saying the Creation Kit comes next month. Also, an incremental update (next week, PC first) to fix magic resistance and flying backwards dragons

Official news from Bethesda:

As of today, it’s been three weeks since we released Skyrim worldwide. We’re simply blown away by the response, from new and old fans, and amazed by the sheer number of people playing the game. It’s been absolutely fantastic hearing your stories, seeing early mods, and watching fan videos (more live music ones please, we love those).

We want to thank everyone reading this for playing our game and supporting all it tries to do. We wouldn’t have this success without you, and we want you to know we’re committed to making your Skyrim experience even better. And not just in the short term, but over the life of the game. Here’s a quick peek at what we’re working on right now:

Creation Kit — Beginning in January, PC players will be able to download the same development tools we used at Bethesda Game Studios to create Skyrim. In tandem with the Creation Kit’s release, we will roll out a new Wiki and videos to help you get started. It also features something we think you’re going to love…

Steam Workshop – We’re excited to share news that we’ve been working closely with Valve to integrate Steam Workshop into the Creation Kit. Using the Workshop, you’ll have free user content with the push of a button. The Creation Kit will bundle your mod and upload it to the Workshop, where everyone can browse, rate, and flag mods for download. You’ll be able to do this from any web device, including your smartphone. Like a live Netflix queue, when you fire up Skyrim, mods you flagged will be automatically downloaded and installed. Everyone here is really excited about the opportunities and possibilities this opens up for our entire community.

Prefer to use existing modding sites? Not a problem. You’ll still be able to upload/share/access Skyrim mods on fan-created mod sites.

Continued Game Updates – This week we released update 1.2 across all platforms, and we’ll be releasing an incremental update next week. We anticipate it will be up on PC first, and then hit PS3 and Xbox 360 later in the week. Among other things, the update will fix issues like magic resistance not calculating properly and the rare, amazing backwards flying dragon. Once the update is released, we’ll share the full release notes.

After the holidays, we’ll continue to release regular updates for the game — through full title updates, as well as incremental “gameplay updates” to fix whatever issues come up along with rebalancing portions of the game for difficulty or exploits. We plan on having a lot of these, not just a few. Overall, you should expect updates to be hitting the PC and Steam earlier and more often, as that’s a process we control. Console updates will follow, as they must be certified and processed by those manufacturers.

We all know this is a huge game, and everyone has a different experience. We’ll continue to do everything we can to make the game better and better for as many people as possible every day. We’ve also realized that with the millions upon millions of people playing Skyrim, we need to treat our updates with greater care. If we get too aggressive trying to fix a minor issue, we run a risk of breaking something larger in a game like this. To be safe, we are prioritizing code side fixes right now over data fixes. Quest and balance issues are usually data, and those will start rolling in a large way with the January updates.

Thanks again for your continued support and patience. We truly have the best fans in the world, and we couldn’t do it without you.

So whats the consensus on SMAA? Is it all its hyped up to be?

What is the best settings to use with it, should use use any AA, AF, or FXAA in the launcher options?

dont use msaa unless you have the gpu to spare its simply too expensive for its inconsistent edge smoothing tho it is the most accurate and also accounts for subpixel details, use 8xAF for best visual/performance cost. FXAA should only be used if you're also using a post sharpening filter to mitigate the loss in detail.

SMAA could potentially look good im going to test it when i get home.

16xQ Control Panel AF is the recommended value, it's far better than Skyrim's AF.

January? Sheesh.

Sounds good though. Not sure how well the Steam store will work but could be great.

We're gonna have 404 errors and you know it! The traffic is going to be killer at first since many will be downloading it just to see it for themselves. Pretty exciting. Lets hope the game is not broken as much by then.

And for kicks, I set processor affinity in RadeonPro to only use 2 cores and I got almost 90% usage at peaks. Going back to 4 cores makes it less optimized. Not that we all didn't know this but makes you wonder what if.

And I think I won't go too crazy on the mods if this is coming. I don't want to over invest and have to delete tons of content. Plus, we don't know if all the current mods will just magically work with this new method. I hope it's as smooth as possible.

Yup.

Smooth isn't a in Bethesda's vocabulary. Gonne be crashes all around. I'll stick to Skyrim Nexus (even though that will probably crash too). Give it 1-2 weeks to settle so mid January :/

I, for one, can't wait to finish the vanilla version and then come back to play an even better game in a year.

Tell me about it! in a year this game is going to be a completely different beast! Will be amazing to play it all over again with so much new and prettier

Is the very start when you are in the carriage and looking around on the ride indicative of how the game is going to run, or will it take huge dips once I actually start playing?

I was troubleshooting my new (old) hand me down video card until late and I only was able to get to the char creation.

I was surprised by how nicely it looked and ran on Medium and I'm hoping its not going to just get wrecked when I'm actually running around the world and stuff.

Should be fairly indicative. Might dip when you're getting around wide open fields.

Yay!!! I was so scared it wasn't going to be playable!!!!

Question - If I were able to very cheaply get another one of the same video card, would SLI'ing it give me a nice boost, or is it not even worth looking into?

Not if he turns down the LOD sliders or just adjusts the ini. For the most part, the bigger slowdowns come in towns or areas with many trees and complex geometry.

Even on low, the game looks pretty good.

On Medium they seemed quite low already.

If I got 800X600 I can run it with lots of stuff turned on!!!

Lol, I'm playing on the comfy couch though, so I need better rez than that. I take solace in the fact that no matter how much I turn it down it should still look better or at least as good as the console versions.

could you post the settings you are talking about and a screen?

This please.

i havent tried this mod but maybe something like this?

Them shaders look good enough for me to put in the OP. I'm gonna try them myself.

Wait, are those just ENB based? I'm looking into it right now but I'm not going to post redundant shaders if they're just ENB with custom settings.

What mods are you guys using at the moment then? I've got:

4GB
Detailed faces
Night sky
Realistic smoke and embers
Realistic water
MSAA

Any more I should check out?

ya it is redundant, i just pointed these out because they have better night contrasts.

All I can say is FUUUCK YES But the only thing I want between all the mods and everything DLC..... I want to use my same (one) character. I only play this game once. So I'm looking forward to mods that will make this game really hard.... I loved hardcore mode in NV with mods to make it fucking stupid hard. I've always played these game like that. one character only so I hope they take that in too account, everything. PLEASE Beth please don't brake the game... anymore..

I've been lucky with beth games sooo but I'll probably get the next few patches... beth knows they fucked up soo please be more careful. But seriously really lucky... 1 crash from a mod in 74 hours... the only problem was the controller on 1.2....

But still I love beth even though they fuck up alot... their games are amazing.
<3

Just to clarify-

If I had backed up my TESV.EXE before steam downloaded the new update, I can just copy that .EXE back and everything will revert back to 1.1, right?

Confidence man, did you download the shaders with the ENB stuff? There are two versions.

It definitely makes the game look better but the menus and steam overlay look like crap :/

So I haven't been keeping up much, sorry if this has been posted a million times.

Can someone help me get my Skyrim large address aware after the 1.2 patch? At least I'm assuming the patch is what broke it. Thanks.

Saw this on a steam post:
