Yeah, Unreal guy has grown on me in this game.

I am a bit surprised at how buggy this patch is to be honest also.

Needs a female version, like the WC3 mod.

I would like for Valve to make a voice that actually fits the game, ideally. rac just shared an idea for the Radiant and Dire to have their own respective voices. That'd be cool, too.

But still... to actually be the one getting that triple kill with my Weaver's last germinate chasing the enemy into their base, as I Skoochy into safety? It is exhilarating.

Speaking of Avatars, is that the OVO OWL in yours?

Nope! :D

I would honestly be surprised if anyone could identify the source of my avatar.

Resemblance is uncanny

I don't want to harp on much because as I mentioned I'm pretty much new to the genre, but hearing the turret voice tell me I was silenced seemed really out of place. Some of the one liners from the heroes are pretty silly, and they get repeated ad nauseum. And yeah, never really been a fan of that style announcer voice.

Wasn't a huge deal, but it just didn't seem to mesh with the artistic direction for me.

Dota has always had silly lines.

I love the random quips in Dota 2. "Now that's a Fail Boat!" when Kunka's boat hits nothing, "I meant to do that" when pudge hooks a creep, "Well, this is Redundant" when Riki activates and invisibility rune.

Yeah those are great. I'm a huge fan of the one-liners.

Owl avatars #1 heard it here first

everytime i hear that i die a little inside

Yeah. I hope these are things they'll get to eventually, because it's a really nice touch. Like the creeps having several different running animations, so they don't all look identical all the time.

Some character have no special things they say when killing certain characters, while people like Alchemist have stuff for like a 4th of the cast.

When do people on GAF usually play together? are the games noob friendly? I've never really played DOTA.

anybody know where I could go to read up on how to get into dota?

Just got a Key a few days ago and have been slowly getting back into it. I loved War3 DOTA and probably played it for 10000 hours back in high school. I've gotten in 4 games so far (wish I could play more but I usually play at 1 am pacific and there are no gaffers on at that time and it takes forever to find a game), lost 3 won 1. I've been randoming lately to just try and get a feel for it again. I know a lot of my suckiness has to do with my lack of practice and that ease of use will come with time but that being said, I do have a few gripes with the overall game.

The first is that there is no attack move or follow attack as there was in the War3 DOTA. For example I was playing beast master and I wanted my boar to keep attacking the lane creeps while I took down some creep in the jungle. It wouldn't do it. I had to manually select each creep I wanted it to attack or put it in the general location. But once that first wave was cleared it would stay there since Attack Move isn't possible. The other thing I wish they added in was Follow Attack where I can set my pet to follow me and it will start attacking if I attack and then stop once I stop. This was a pretty useful feature.

Second issue is with the overall pointer. Maybe I haven't gotten used to it yet but I feel like when I click on something, I can't really tell if I've selected it. I had a really hard time selected my bird as beast master. The other thing I wish happened was that the mouse would change shape with a spell or move is selected. For example, in War3 DOTA hitting "A" would change the mouse icon from a pointer to a sword with a red cross. Just makes things easier to distinguish.

Third: The shop layout. Maybe I'm just wanting nostalgia from the old DOTA but I really wish it was separated out into sections instead of tabs on one dude. Being able to access the shop from battle and not having to scroll back like before is quite nice though.

Forth: This may be just me but I feel like the entire game is zoomed-in a little more giving less total vision of the field. like the heroes seem bigger.

Fifth: While I'm loving the art style I wish it was a little brighter overall like War3 DOTA was. It made things really easy to distinguish and separate. Give the heroes colors to keep them from blending in with the landscape. Also, the goddamn trees. I almost hope they change it to all trees being exactly uniform and short. Right now, its distracting and its very difficult for me to discern paths.

Sixth: Over all HUD seems to be a bit too large and wish they would stream line it more. When I click on a hero I really don't need to see/shouldn't see which skills they've picked and stuff. And the game menu system seems clunky. The whole watching games, finding games, with all these news feeds.

Seventh and lastly, and this is probably because I haven't gotten used to it, but the overall game seems slower. Almost like its a bit laggy. I feel like spells take .25 seconds to go off. I don't think this is lag with my computer or ping because when I tell my hero to move, it does so immediately. I only really run into this problem when casting spells or attacking.

Aside from these issues, I'm still loving the game. I'm not going to go into the merits of the game because they've all been said before, ditto. I get that this IS beta and most of the issues I have will hopefully be fixed.

1) I had a buddy complain about this issue last night. He hated how it felt like he had to micro manage if he had any control of any secondary characters.

2) I haven't had this problem but I get the complaint. I'll address the more bellow though.

3) As I stated a few posts above you in my UI complaints. Everyone I know who's played thinks the shop UI is a cluster funk and a half. Poor job and very un well Valve like.

4) It's not really bigger heroes, but how everything seems similar sized. Creeps, Hereos, Trees etc... all seem to be the same size.

5) That leads me to your 5th point. I really like the graphics and the art style, but as I complained like a day or two ago I'm not a total fan of the washed outness. Supposedly it's done to make things stand out. IDK I don't see it. With everything in the world being the same size things not stand out enough for me to much stuff in crazy battles blends into one another. They need to highlight heroes better to distinguish them from the rest of the creeps and the world in game (not talking about the map).

6) Hud takes up a shit ton of needless space, and the lobby UI is atrocious in general. It's early though and I forgive Valve cause it's beta. It's obvious because certain things aren't even filled in yet. Getting a party together for a practice match though makes no earthly sense what so ever right now though.

7) Haven't really had any problems in terms of spells being slow to go off. Only issue I've had is running away and sometimes my character will randomly try and turn and fight.

Overall the actual gameplay seems to be really far along. It's all of the other stuff that still needs work. This is all IMO of course, and I couldn't really tell you how the balance is going yet.

After getting a general feel for the game in a few bot games I jumped online. I chose Viper because I heard some positive things about him for beginners somewhere, and found it surprisingly easy to last hit with him compared to the other champions I'd tried. Was kind of worried but I guess it was unwarranted, the other team were at a pretty low skill level and my team pretty much walked over them.

There was a Nature's Prophet on my team who really seemed to know what he was doing, and in my solo lane versus Dragon Knight I would up building up well enough and grabbing some kills here and there with his help. Went 18/3/8 by the end of the game, and felt kind of bad because my XP and gold rate were absurdly high compared to the enemy team, so I just kind of spiraled out of control in the end and was level 21 when the enemy team was still around 11-14. Definitely made me want to really learn the game.

When do people on GAF usually play together?

I'm wondering this too.

I agree. The issues we have can be fixed pretty easily. The core gameplay is still really good.

Oh yeah, just thought of an eighth gripe.

I hate how when you select another hero (enemy or friendly) your entire bottom HUD turns to the perspective of that Hero. The problem with this, the way I see it, is two-fold. 1.), You lose control of your own hero when gathering information about another hero since your bottom HUD is flipped to the hero you are scanning. You can no longer move, attack unless you have done so beforehand. And most importantly, you can no longer cast spells. 2.) In large battles or chases where you are constantly clicking. It is very easy to misclick and select another hero without meaning too. Sometimes you don't even realize you no longer have your hero selected until it is too late.

My idea, which I did suggest on the dev DOTA forums was that they make it so whenever you click on another hero to see what kind of items they have or to scan their mana or something; you have a little info box pop up at the top left or right of the screen. Once you have read all you needed know, you can quickly hit ESC or some other hotkey to close it. You can only view one other hero at a time and clicking another hero while a Info Box is open simply overlays the newly clicked hero on top of the old one.

We play throughout the day. Just join the NeoGAF channel and see if there's anyone who's free to play. I played for about a good 6-8 hours with GAF people yesterday.

Wow Viper's last hit animation is god-like. I feel like I'm playing a HON hero. My only two games with him I've gotten rampages, godlike streaks, and carried my team to victory.

You are on the Top Live Games, guys, better step it up.

I still think this game should in theory get easier as more and more people enter the beta. The smaller pool means it's harder to match up 5 on 5 with the appropriate skill level balancing irregardless of how much you know/how good you are at the game. Well maybe not easier, but at least better balanced and less lopsided in one direction or the other.

So after 5 games, For all the hype/psych-out from coming over from LOL to DOTA. It seems to be very much the exact opposite. Its bad for whomever I've been facing. 4 out of the 5 games, I've been holding down 1v2 lanes like aces, racking up 2-3 dozen denies and normally a solid farm.

What did you select for experience level? There's a chance you're just getting matched below your skill level, as soon as you hit the tryhard teams you'll see games become a lot closer in matching.
