Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

Maybe Nintendo will go the Gameboy Player router for Gamecube backwards compatibility. Just a disk drive, 4 Gamecube ports and 2 memory card ports attached to the Wii U with a USB cable.

Though even if they go that route I'm sure they will also sell Gamecube (and likely Wii) game downloads in the Shop Channel.

Nevermind. I get what you're saying now. But still there's nothing really to take beyond what he said.

I know I'm being really critical. Crysis is one of my favorite games this gen and I still don't have a PC that could run it at max settings, full 1080p & 60 fps so I know I'm being a bit hypocritical. There are instances where I can see it being done, but the problem is that 90% of the games aren't even 720p. Although Nintendo has never developed in HD, I assume that they will be one of the rare cases that will make this a priority. The excitement right before a console launch is so much fun though. Reminds me of when the GC and Wii launched - so much hype and speculation.

<--- Still can't tell the difference in resolutions besides on PC games.

=/

For BluRays and Console games... it's all the same to me.
I mean, even side by side it's hard to tell sometimes.

If your TV isn't 1080p you probably won't notice it. If it is, it's very noticable especially if you can see the difference on PC. Ridge Racer 7 is one of the only console games that supports both.

why isn't tiling used more often on the 360? Is it just because it requires effort that developers aren't willing to put in, or is there a lag/gpu impact that might affect what you can get up on the screen?

I'm sure it's been said before, but all I want is a WiiU that is "powerful" enough for PS720 games to be ported over to. I couldn't give a flying fcuk about the textures being slightly better on the PS720 or the frame rate slightly more stable etc etc.

The generation I've had to buy a PS3, as a lot of the multi platform games couldn't be downgraded to the Wii. I don't want to have to do that again.

So as long as the WiiU is in the same ballpark as PS720, I'm a happy gamer.

Yep, same here.

Can someone point me to the link where it has been confirmed or rumored that some Radeon HD 4830 type of CG was in the alpha kits ?

Tiling on the 360 is used quite often - 2x FSAA at 720p already exceeds the edram size.

Historically, for some time developers were left to do entirely 'manual' tiling via the standard viewport means of the 3D API, which was not the most efficient way, so ATI actually introduced tiling/binning-facilitating 3D API extensions. But even with those, tiling was not free (a tile's resolve is both stalling the GPU and sucks CPU cycles), thus tiling was a major pain in the ass (tm) during the first 360 year, and remained a numb spot (r) for the rest of the console's lifecycle. Basically, the fewer the tiles - the better (tm)(r).

Which is why it's good to know the Wii U can do 1080p w/ FXAA without tiling :) Granted, it won't be used very often, but it won't be as much of a pain in the ass for devs to do 1080p as on the 360.

And this is what the vast majority of consumers will feel as well.

Kinda Off topic but seems like all the tech guys are here :p Say that a developer decided to ignore the 3d on the 3ds. Could they use more of the systems power towards making it look better? Or does the 3d actually not require that much power

SMAA is an evolution of MLAA that's much better at dealing with subpixel aliasing.

Thanks. Even though that pdf was for PR, it was very informative as well.

I have a new question. Last year Nintendo renewed their license to use S3TC. Assuming this is used for Wii U wouldn't that in essence make the 32MB "bigger" or is there some hurdle(s) in the way that goes against this line of thinking?

This is where I'm at. As long as the Wii U can and will get those games I'll be happy. I don't care if the difference is the PS4/Xbox3 versions are set on "high or ultra" and the Wii U is set on "medium or high". I'm fine with that. I just don't want to and can't continue as a multi-console owner.

To say something completely meaningless. Colours. A lot of the confusion last E3 was down to the fact it was white. Platinum would solve that issue. What am I saying it will be while and black only.

This assumes the Wii U is doing Wii BC in hardware. Even if the games only run in 480p still, this isn't an indicator of software or hardware emulation since Nintendo has always been known as emulating their games as close to the original as possible, including output resolution.
This is a point I've wanted to say for a while. What happens with 16:9? Wii is anamorphic (460*480) widescreen. They've said it won't upscale but what if it outputted the original resolution correctly. It would generate a noticable improvement.

Is even USB3 fast enough to handle the disk drive though? I suppose they could go for a pre-load and have the disc drive as DRM (like Xbox 360).

No. For much of my gaming life I've had two main systems; a gaming PC, and a Nintendo system.

Majority of your typical 'next generation' games I buy on PC. I get superior graphics, control options, usually online, mod community and tweaking. These pros vastly outweigh the cons of buying these games for what I consider inferior gaming platforms that do nothing my PC can do, only less.

I always buy Nintendo platforms, regardless of issues I have with them, because it's the only place I can get Nintendo games. Given Nintendo is one of my favourite developers, and I've gamed Nintendo games for as long as I can remember, to pass on a Nintendo system would be to pass on Metroid, Mario, Zelda, F-Zero, and countless other franchises that I hold very dear. As I've said before, I am bound to Nintendo systems regardless of what Nintendo does. They have me by the balls, for better or worse.

But even with these two systems, there is always a library of games I can get on neither, and that is where a third system fills the gaps. Last generation it was the PlayStation 2, this generation it is the PlayStation 3. I didn't get my PlayStation 3 until late last year because the console exclusive library just wasn't enticing enough. Now that I have it my library is still quite small, and surprisingly my favourite PlayStation 3 titles are also available on the Xbox 360.

Going in to next generation I will be buying a Wii U for sure, for the aforementioned reasons. But I'll also have my gaming PC. If a game comes out for both, I will be getting it on PC, for the superior gaming experience. There is always the chance I will double dip if the Wii U version gets some seriously interesting tweaks, changes or additions to accommodate motion controls and/or the touch pad, but they'd have to be pretty damn fantastic to warrant a second purchase. Then I'll no doubt get a PS4 down the line. As for games that bridge the two, if I don't own a PS4 right away (which I probably wont) and I can't get them on PC, I'd probably get those games on the Wii U, but again may double dip for the better looking version once I pick up a PS4.

Console gaming value to me is entirely hinged on the exclusive games. Despite the 360 and PS3 having great value for most gamers, and for good reasons, they by large don't have a lot of value to me (until now) because 90% of the 'must buy' titles are also on PC. That's why I'm not really interested in the Wii U being a port machine, or having strong third party support in the form of getting every bloody game that appears everywhere else. I love the exclusives, the quirky games, and the unique titles I cant get anywhere else. It's why I love the Wii.

Nintendo is lucky they make great games, because if they were only developing hardware and didn't have those great exclusives I'd struggle to think of a good reason to buy the hardware.

You *are* me... this is an uncanny post.

It's crazy because I agree even though I love all facets of video games and this generation had almost proven to me that in order to get the most out of it, I need to own multiple consoles to catch everything. At the same time though, the lion's share of "big" releases see PC release enough that I'm strongly considering going Gaming PC/Wii U/Vita/3DS next gen and leaving it at that. If oddball things like Bayonetta, (Ultimate) Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Journey and PS2 HD Collections hadn't happened this generation, I'd be pretty content with that setup.

I'm hoping PS4 is enough of a leap to mothball my PC for a few years and go PS4/wiiU for a while. Then as the PC catches up I'll come back to it

If you keep your gaming PC current there will be nothing inside the PS4 (or WiiU lol) that will give it the need to "catch up"

I wish someone with actual credibility could just crush that rumour or anything about it and offer some solid info right now. Guess they gotta be tight.

Even 90-128MB is still a pretty ludicrous number for edram. None of it really matches up with dev kits rumors we have heard since E3 anyway.
There are no solid rumors regarding the eDRAM. It's supposedly "a lot" and "enough for 1080p", and that's it. I heavily doubt it'll be anywhere near 90MB, but I guess between 32MB and 64MB are a possibility.

Since this rumor got brought up again, I would like to ask some questions about memory and it's use in consoles. Although 96MB - 128MB isn't unrealistic - we know IBM can do it - I'm curious what that eDRAM would do and at what point it would be wasteful or unusable. I know there's a sweet spot for optimal performance when building a machine so I'm curious -

How much of a difference does more ram really make? What are the different types of ram used for? At what point do you think too much would be? I guess a good example would be Xbox 360. We know it was originally going to only have 256MB of memory but then got increased to 512MB. It also has 10MB of eDRAM. As an example, if everything else stayed the same in the 360, what kind of difference would 1024MB of memory and 20MB of eDRAM make?

Should have clarified that I was talking about the processor part of the rumor, which is supposed to be tri core not quad. As for the edram, I would imagine all the next gen systems will top out at 64MB and under.

On that side, there are (solid) rumors: 4MB. All L2 cache, like with the A2. Considering IBM is most likely responsible for CPU and GPU (even though it's based on an AMD design), it's quite possible that IBM's eDRAM technology is used on both sides.

wasn't lherre at one point saying he knew nothing just worked in a building with one, to suddenly knowing it inside out.

You're thinking of a different poster. lherre never said anything till I quizzed him on it.

I'm really warming up to the idea of buying a Wii U at launch.

I think it's a combination of Skyward Sword, Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 giving me confidence in Nintendo continuing to be the highest class developers in the world, the fact that two screen play really does seem to be innovative and I think will see more tangible benefits than motion control has and also the fact that it'll probably be good value for money now that Nintendo have gone through the 3DS experience.

E3 2011 will ultimately be the decider but it just seems like the stars are aligning.

All devs for WiiU games have to be under really draconian NDAs, if still we are not able to get exact specs of the console.

Specs this
Specs that

I'm more surprised they are able to keep people quiet about any and all games they may be making for the console.

Though with this latest Ubisoft news, I believe we now know more of their games for the Wii (Killer Freaks, Ghost Recon Online, Assassin's Creed and possibly the MMO) than we do of Nintendo's.
