The Last of Us (Naughty Dog): Hold One Second

Really hope it ISN'T open-world.

Would hate for ND to go the boring open-world route and also have to impact their incredible graphics.

ND can make fairly open world games with amazing graphics and bags of character, see Jak and Daxter series. I really hope that is the case here. Not totally open world but a huger and explorable environment, kind of like in Crysis. They can do that here, its a new IP, they can switch up the formula

Wait, where was it confirmed that the game was worked on for two years already?

Usually pre-production can take up to 8-12 months depending on the game, with only a small core team, so I think it's been in full production for a year. If this is true, and if they can leverage the expertise they've accumulated from the UC3 team, the release window COULD be 2012.

However, if they are coming up with a lot of innovative gameplay or new gameplay mechanics they are unfamiliar with, a longer dev cycle wouldn't be surprising to me.

2013 is too far away though, and who knows what state PS3 will be in by then.

What is the point of making this game neutered, corridor and linear like Uncharted?

To make it more cinematic or focused in narrative and set piece splendour?

I'd personally want something that's a happy medium. Definitely not open world, but not corridor linear either (which I don't think Uncharted 2/3 is a lot of the time). Perhaps Uncharted like but with more open ended environments and a little bit more room for exploration or choice, though I wouldn't be disappointed either way.

Pardon?

Are you asking 'what is the point of linear games' when the majority of video games are linear? I don't think you could describe Uncharted as a corridor shooter, especially in the latter two.

Sorry, not everyone likes playing 50 hour games, with little quests that you can decide to do, or not. That unfocused, potentially boring style of gaming is not for me.

Hell, I'm open for a game with more and bigger worlds - but not an 'open-world' game. I couldn't even enjoy RDR.

Since arne is reading this I hope this game will have more control given to the player, something which UC3 sometimes seemed to lack, particularly at the start. I think UC2 struck the right balance between control and cinematics, but a few games recently just seem to be press a button at a certain time while the character goes through some motions and it's a worrying trend. Games should be more about the player controlling the action and determining outcomes.

I hope it's linear and the focus is on surviving attacks of small packs of zombies. Make them a real threat.

The girl seemed like she will be a good character.

Looks amazing, basically. I want it now!

I think you're right. There are lots of moments (especially Syria) where the player should be in control. If you're making a cutscene where the player could actually be doing it, please don't.

There's a bit where you climb up to look at the top of (is it Yemen) - it's turned to a cutscene. In Uncharted 2, you climed the Hotel to have a look over the city all by yourself.

Make it in-game, make the player be in control, and have the characters talk around the player. You can even play around with in-game camera angles (as ND already does) - just try and cut down the amount of cutscenes.

I'd argue that UC3 offers some of the most open and tactically diverse shooting segments in any shooter out there. The ship graveyard segment in particular. About the farthest thing from a linear 'corridor interactive movie' as you could possibly get.
That stretch of levels is why I say U3 is better than U2...so amazing. On topic it seems like some places look to be on U3's level graphically, then gifs like the one above are on another level.

Aren't most open world games just filled with linear missions?

Having a developer good at linear experiences isn't exactly a bad thing.

Not everyone likes open-world. Some people like focused, shorter experiences. We don't all have hours to play games. A game with more options and choices, yes. Open-world with lots of quests. No.

I imagine that Naughty Dog will try to make the game not-Uncharted so I remain optimistic that while it won't be sandbox, it will be more open. And not all sandbox games have to be 50+ hours....

The recent, and underrated, Dead Island is a good example.

This guy gets it.

The problem with a game full of linear missions is that it doesn't feel like it's going anywhere. Everything is so sharp, short and unrelated.

Zombie apocalypse? Not the most creative idea for a video game at this point...

But it's still more interesting than Uncharted's Indian Jones-like premise in my personal opinion. It's nice to see Naughty Dog trying out new things, I just hope there's a lot more to it than shooting things though.

It is a bad thing if the world is boring. I'd argue that most open worlds in games are boring. I wouldn't want to have to push through a boring world in order to get to some exciting missions. That's how I felt about several open world titles this year.

a good example of a game with a bunch of stupid sidequests? I sure hope ND wasn't looking at Dead Island when designing this, that'd just play away from their strengths.

Keep the story strong, no sandbox.

Seems like the hints were out there for a while but we just didn't know where to look!

Who needs PS4

I seriously thought it was CG(missed the beginning of the trailer) till Gaf started talking about how it was in engine. It's pretty mind-blowing what Naughty Dog can do.

What? I was stating that most openworld suck because they have linear design philosophy. I think you read it wrong.

Can't wait to get a good close look at the cordycept victims. I wonder if there are different fungi or different mutations or maybe stages to infections. I find the real life fungus incredibly fascinating and seeing the videos with the lifeless skeletons of insects spawning these strangely beautifull is so haunting.

I'm playing Dead Island at the moment and it's just a bunch of boring fetch quests. I'm three hours in and I haven't done one unique mission yet.

Terrible example for a good open world game.

I will never not be sick of trailers for games that show absolutely zero gameplay or really even any indication of what the game will be like. This trailer literally means nothing.

try to look at images of cordyceps, fascinating, imagine if they jump species to humans lol

So, this is in-engine, but not real-time. Ugh, I wish they'd stop using this loophole.

He he you're getting mixed up.

It's real-time run on a PS3. But it's not 'in-game' as in, it's not gameplay.

It's a real-time cutscene rendered by a PS3 (it's NOT pre-rendered in-engine - it's more than that).

I, for one, love pretentious trailers. It's only an issue when there is a massive emotional disconnect between my initial exposure to the game and the game itself e.g. Dead Island/Gears.

I wonder how they are going to handle spores. With the real life fungi they release spores after they have fully grown from the bodies. Obviously we can already see that ND has taken liberties with the source material but I do wonder if that will still remain an aspect of the gameplay. Metro 2033 gas mask style maybe?
