Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

I don't agree with dismissing Cave Johnson. He's one of the central characters in Portal 2. Like Jeff said, a good character really isn't more than voice acting and writing. He's long dead by the events of the game, but he still gets a satisfying story arc, his dialog is hilarious and J.K. nails the part.

I agree, but I think they were just looking for a reason to only have one Portal 2 nomination in a category with plenty of worthy mentions.

Trine 2's music is for no joke! And no mention of Radiant Historia. Boooo!
:P

This is making me laugh way too much.

"Jeff...YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER!!!"

Oh man, the production for Ryan's top ten is so good. Wonder if they'll all be like that. Also, lmao @ Vinny on the TV.

Every time I hear them talk about SR3 on the podcast, it sounds amazing. Then every time I've seen them play the game on TNT or a quick look, it looks dreadful.

It's driving me crazy.
Yeah, I'm so lost with Saints Row 3. Got really excited after listening to them talk about it on the Bombcast when it came out, but pretty much the entirety of the story was painfully dull. I haven't done any of the side stuff, though, so maybe that's where all the good stuff is.

Yeah, their love of SR3 is questionably odd. It's a great game but doesn't seem like it's worth the hype and gushing love that they have for it. I suspect that game reviewers who play tons of different games like SR3 because it's simple and mindless action which is a breath of fresh air compared to all the other games they have to play through.

Vinny on TV is already great.

Yep, all 2 minutes of it, then cut to 30 minutes of Saints Row 3 footage as Ryan fumbles with infinitely respawning Deckers.

But really, as far as disembodied head performances goes, Vinny may have topped his Wii Play QL. I hope this will be featured everyday on the recaps.

I really hope Vinny's videos are just his disembodied head.

Where was mad dog? I obviously wasn't paying enough attention...

/edit oh right, the gunstringer stuff. I thought it was Jeff's crazy Nintendo Download Express buddy for some reason.

I received SR3 360 for Xmas, but now I'm hearing it's better on PS3. More friends have it for the PS3, and I could exchange it tomorrow. But I really wanted to play it tonight. Is the difference worth trading in?

I'm fully expecting it to come down to SR3 and Skyrim. I think Jeff and Ryan (Ryan especially) will probably argue for SR3, but Brad/Vinny/Patrick will argue for Skyrim. Jeff seemed to really like Skyrim, and Brad/Vinny/Patrick seemed to sour a little bit on SR3 so I think Skyrim is the most common ground. Ryan not having played Skyrim at all (?) I think is the only thing that even casts any doubt at all on Skyrim.

That said assuming that's the case, I'm not sure what the other runner-up would be; maybe Bastion? I think everyone kinda soured a bit on Uncharted 3 and Batman which would have been my guesses beforehand.

Side quests are basically shit if you do them more than once.

Was Witcher 2 really that hard? (Talking about the Eastern Bloc award) The prologue was tough, I admit, but by half way through the game I felt like almost a walking god. I think it's because they locked away a lot of the basic combat mechanics behind skill upgrades.

Seeing that people are confused by Mad Dog McCree references makes me feel sad and old.

I'm on board with Deckers Die being level of the year, even though I died myself several times on the level. The wacky parts and the QTE at the end of it more than outweighed the frustration for me.

I'm really glad my discovery of Zimos and Burt Reynolds talking together showed up during the podcast today. Seriously, if you haven't done it yet call both of them up at the same time and drive around for a bit - it's incredible.

Do Brad and Patrick not realize that Nate never intended to go to
the ghost town and it was not where he was headed to at all? He went there when he saw it because he was hoping there was some water. That's it. And someone did beckon him to go there, not Elena but instead, the Sully mirage.

Not that I'm saying that Uncharted 3 should win best level, I thought the desert wasn't that great honestly.

There are like four separate parts in Uncharted 3 that are better than the desert stuff. That constant fading in and out and grinding up against an invisible wall at the top of a sand dune really spoiled that for me.
The convoy attack from horseback, running around inside a ship rolling as it sinks, the shipyard fight (that they mentioned hating on the podcast but screw those guys it was awesome), that game had so many worthy contenders. Hell, you fall out of a plane while fighting dudes!

I'm surprised by the lack of Skyrim in Ryan's top 10. I didn't think it would win, but it's a way better game than anything in his back five. I thought the recent You Don't Know Jack was horrid, and I loved the original games.

I just had one of the most fun sessions of videogaming in awhile with SR3 and Skyrim sucked away days of my life and still does, so either way I'm probably behind whatever they pick.

Anything interesting go on down on the podcast? Also can I get a full list of categories?

The personal lists so far have been quite dull and I expect that to be a trend. Though Tropico 4 being that crazy dude's top 1 game is pretty funny.

I'd like to hear them discuss/dismiss Dark Souls, The Witcher 2, Shogun 2, Serious Sam 3, Ghost Trick, and Catherine(even though I know some of these will be negative). I'd appreciate it if people told me if they get brought up.

Hmm, the best mission/level and best character discussion on the podcast were pretty interesting. The rest of it was less so because it seemed like they pretty much knew who won immediately and were only debating runner-ups really.

wow, I really thought Ryan would go for Skyrim. I guess I don't know him that well. His top 10 list was pretty good.

Jeff said Skyrim was his game of the year at the gt.tv show thingie before the vga's. Maybe that was between the games that were nominated there I guess..... I dunno.

I'm shocked how Deus Ex: HR was completely absent from their discussions. It at least deserved a mention in the best character category for Adam Jenson and best music. =/

Was a bit surprised to see it not get a mention for best music, for me this year it was Deus Ex/Ghost Trick and Bastion for best music.

I really enjoyed Saints Row 3 but I do wonder if it had come out early on in the year and say something like Portal 2 had come out in mid November would some of the talk for GOTY be different.

I've finally gotten around to playing Saints Row 3 and it's pretty good. You guys should play Saints Row 3.

Not liking it, shit shooting, dumb enemies, radio stations humour that is a blatant rip off of GTA's (You can't parody parody)

Also one missions was bugged, a door wouldn't open (in a fetish bar) so that was that.

That's one game they didn't spoil. The rest is pretty much spoiled.

Oh thank goodness. I've played the rest. :P

I'd agree with them on Nate stumbling upon his destination, and how badly coincidental that was, but it wasn't Sandlantis, it was just some random ruined town. So that made better sense to me. It was weirder how he didn't pass out as soon as the first shoot-out started.

Yeah, I feel like Deus Ex: HR is really being overlooked by the guys over at Giant Bomb. Even when it came out it seemed like most of them didn't really bother with it. That's okay though, I don't go into these things expecting to agree with most of the picks, I just enjoy the personalities. It's all good fun.

Jensen was obviously the missing link in their character discussion (Johnson, Johnson, and Jensen).

The Uncharted 3 nomination for best level is kind of funny to me because it's basically implying that the entire bread and butter of the gameplay is worse than a cinematic moment where user input is completely unimportant. If that really is the best part of the game than that's probably not a good sign.

Yeah, you have to go in understanding the tastes of the guys and what they have played. As someone who plays a lot of JRPG's it can be very frustrating, but it is what it is.
