Avowed: Less Diet Skyrim and more Skyrim Zero

^ this guy did a great job explaining why this style of dialog ruins the mood so badly. He was talking about ME Andromeda which came out almost 8 years ago, but it could just as easily apply to so much of the crap coming out today.

the core issue is, why should I take this game seriously if the characters in the game so obviously don't? if it is all a big joke to them and nothing is meant to be taken seriously then what's the point?

Even in a comedy type adventure, there should be some times for seriousness. Speaking of Obsidian games, you play South Park Stick of Truth and the characters in that game take the adventure more seriously than these cringe quip games do. But these games are not really meant to be comedies.

For a "modern audience" who needs the game world to know your pronouns. Nah, I'm good.

Hogwarts Legacy exclusively uses They/Them pronouns and you played it and said it was ‘refreshing’ and ‘your dream game’

Hypocrite

Seems like a lot of talented people have left obsidian and whoever is there is wearing it as a skin suit

Yeah honestly it feels like the writers are embarrassed about taking this nerdy fantasy shit seriously.

Dark Messiah is one of my favorite games of all time and still unmatched when it comes to first-person melee gameplay and feel.
It's crazy that the game never got a sequel or no one took inspiration from it. It had all the glorious environment interaction (some of which was inspired by legacy of Kain) and it had tons of cool ideas. It also had an edgy story and cool characters. Modern ubisoft would never green light anything like it.

I am a big time original might and magic and heroes of might and magic fan and was sketpical of dark messiah at first, it turned out great.

I've been playing outer worlds and I don't think that's a bad game by obsidian like 6/10. But the lack of romance, the choices aren't really scary too me, the characters are decent but its like forced platonic stale relationships with people.

Outer worlds come across very Bland, and it makes me nervous about what Avowed is going to be. Cause i wanted to experience a Obsidian game and the world could be a lot better.

Its just weird to go from Baldurs Gate 3 and be afraid of any choice you make, because the world is that interactive with your decisions how you navigate the world/relationships.....then play Outer worlds which has none of these things.
Would you actually want relationships with all the women that look like dudes? I mean they all have ugly faces and weird hairdos except for one, and she is a lesbian. So what relationships can you have unless you play a female character? I guess there is that, but go back to the my first point. BG3/mass effect, outer worlds is not.

Wouldn’t you want the chance to bone all these sexy waifus? They’re all so great I can’t even choose which one is the best.

Imagine taking the time to collate all this.... Or are you crowd sourcing it on some Discord somewhere full of gnashing teeth and adolescent rage? Does my head in how invested some people are in all this.

IDK where it came from I just googled “Outer Worlds women” and this pic comes up.

And yeah people tend to get invested in the world and characters when they play an RPG, don’t know why that’s so surprising to you.

You are unquestionably, irrevocably, 100% correct.

This really killed some of my already fairly meager interest in this game with the quippy characters thing.

I really can't stand it. Like you can have subtle comedy in a game w/o that not remotely funny "everyone is just sarcastic and arrogant" Marvel thing.

Hopefully it's not all like that.

The best game this year for me has been Fallout London for instance. Lots of funny bits, but the characters still mostly take themselves seriously and fit in the world they've created.

Or hell.. Skyrim.. plenty of stuff is more light hearted, it's not all with a "furled brow" as the writer wrote.

And beyond that it being fairly small scale is already a turn off for me. I play these kind of games with the intent to re-play them and find more stuff or new paths to completing things, not to have a "concise' experience.

I don't think anything's gonna change some minds. Even if this gets gos reviews in the 80s, some folks will say shit like 'of course it got high scores from all the dei supporting websites' or some such. 🤷‍♂️

Fair criticism is fine but when it's built on a false thing, my inner Xbox Justice Casanova can't stand it. :messenger_sunglasses:

“I think players are going to be really pleased with how fun the combat feels, moment to moment,” says game director Carrie Patel. “We wanted to take the momentum and sense of impact from more action-forward games, and add that player-driven progression and choice from our RPG roots.”

Well, I hope so, but that's the kind of thing you'd expect a game director to say.

Where Bethesda approaches fantasy with a furrowed brow, Obsidian opts for a more irreverent tone. Its banter levels land somewhere between Guardians of the Galaxy and 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons film – which will be off-putting for people for whom the Avengers style of dialogue has not so much soured as entirely curdled.

That's not good. I prefer games to take their stories seriously, with a dash of humor mixed in. I dislike the constant jokey/"ironic" tone that's become so popular lately. If the characters aren't taking things seriously, why should I? And I rarely find the self-consciously "witty" banter witty; usually it just comes off as sarcastic.

“We’re really excited for players to meet the companions that we built for them,” says Patel. We had a lot of fun building these characters out and trying to develop interesting moments between them. As you move through the world, they’ll talk to each other, giving you time to get to know them, and also to see them get to know each other.”

I hope they created some interesting companions. Outer Worlds was a dud as far as that goes. I'm hoping they up their game this time.

In many ways what I see here is less Diet Skyrim and more Skyrim Zero – not so overindulgent and without the dodgy aftertaste.

I don't even know what that means. I like Diet Coke - a little too much, to the point where I have to avoid it, because I get addicted to the stuff.

Anyway, I hope they put out a decent RPG. At this point, I'm not expecting anything great - probably a relatively short, B-grade (low 80s) WRPG with serviceable combat, okay but rather generic storytelling, and occasionally annoying characters/dialog. I would be okay with that. I wouldn't rush out to play it, but I'd get around to it eventually.

Combat looks far, far more engaging than Skyrim, that's for sure. Female characters look like shit, par for the course, dialogue's pretty good for this kind of game. Graphics look off, like it needs another lighting pass. Overall 7.5/10, good for Gamepass.

Look you're only a decade too late.
