Giant Bomb's Game of the Year Thread: Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skyrim? Skylanders!

Just got to Portal 2 vs. Bastion
Opinions and all but...I thought Portal 2 was a faaaaar better game. Bastion is just kind of forgettable to me, from a gameplay perspective. Their arguments didn't really convince me either.

There were no arguments really. They put Bastion in, say it's a better game than Portal 2 (lol) and that was it.

Man

The only thing I really had an issue with was Ryan voting for Skyrim for really, really spurious reasons.

Abstain if you haven't played the game and don't want to elevate what would be your other choice. Don't just go "Haven't played it, but Game of the Year!"
Or, I don't know, be a professional and play the fucking game because it was obviously going to be Skyrim vs. Something at the end?

I can really respect Ryan for deferring to the better game game in the end, he was able and willing to step outside himself for the sake of the voting process, despite his immense love for SR3. Whereas Jeff was just insufferably staunch and sort of a passive aggressive dick about it and made really no particularly great arguments for SR3 (Saints Row numba 1 y'all, Burt fuckin' Reynolds mayne, let's wrap it up - yeh, you can only go to that well so many times, Jeff) and some very poor arguments against Skyrim (like, every dungeon is sort of the same, and the motivations to be in those dungeons are always... sort of the same - really Jeff, reeeeeeeeeally?)

I thought Brad brought forward a strong case for Skyrim, argued it very well, conceded to the flaws, but ultimately did a much, much better job of convincing me (someone who wouldn't necessarily have Skyrim in his top 2 or even 3) why this should be the number one game of the year, he definitely made reevaluate some decisions and swayed me. Whereas I think Jeff ended up further souring me on Saints Third by the end.

No fucking way, Brads arguments were terrible, and Jeff was right about dungeons being the same shit over and over again.
Yeah, I actually went from being indifferent to the game to almost despising it because of some of the things Brad said about it.

Jeff at some point said that Brad must be on some pre-release patch schedule because he seems to be playing an awesome game. I wish I was playing the game that Brad was playing, but that's simply not the experience I had with it.

Maybe I got a magical PS3 version, I played an imperial w/heavy points in archery & sorcery and my dungeon enemy encounters were almost always varied and interesting. I didn't keep running into the same 2-3 enemy types, so I can't really understand that complaint from Jeff, as it was definitely not my experience.

I platinum'd that thing ffs. If anyone who should have a serious nord axe to grind with that game's tremendous failings, it would be me. But here I am, content and happy to see it number #1.

The game is absolutely unbelievably awesome despite itself.

I 1000'ed Saints Row, for what that's worth. lol

I almost Platinum'ed Skyrim if it wasn't for a glitch and still think that game falls apart after about 40 hours; and I'm not even talking about the terrible technical problems the PS3 version has.
Still a good game overall, though.

As did I, and I was very underwhelmed by the game on the back of Jeff, Vinny and Ryan's glowing reviews and impressions, I wanted to fall in love with this game, I really did. I agree with Brad wholeheartedly that a lot of the things those guys love about this game is very surface, and it is great in parts, but scratch past that surface and underneath is something not as great, I'd say it's very, very average.

I think the lesson for me here is, I love those guys and their sense of humor and the perspective they bring in the context of talking mad mess about games and the industry week to week. But maybe what they, themselves find humorous and the writing and comedy that resonates strongly with them on a personal level might not hit the exact same chords with me, actually they rarely hit any and I feel Saints Row: The Third is definitely one of those things that didn't please in the way I was hoping for.

Nope, Giant Bomb has it right. Now only if they didn't have LA Noire on the list. :<

I would agree that Uncharted 3 is disappointing compared to Uncharted 2. But Dead Space 2 ugh... So much wrong with that game imo, but see so many people enjoying it a lot, so it much be doing something right. But from playing it all I got from it was a cheesy game with constant cheap scares, which is just not good enough when the main gameplay is just one big gimmick of shooting of limbs.

Yeah pretty much the same for me. There's a few people there that I usually agree with but I am mostly on there for the great bombcast and videos, rarely even read a review over there.

I was very pleased to see Dead Space hang as long as it did. I thought it might get the new year's game shuffle, but glad it was not forgotten.

I just wish Alex would have been there for once, to pimp to the moon. That's the only game I was really hoping would win something and thought might get something after the good review on there.

Odd, since he made me look back on Skyrim in a worse light than I did when I started listening to these podcasts. I simply don't understand the argument that it offers some sort of unparalleled gameplay experience.

How can someone making positive arguments toward a game make you like it less?

Skyrim does a lot of things and excels in none of them barring exploration.

When playing a stealth characters the AI routines are absolutely dreadful.

Bandit: There's an arrow in my back and all my friends are dead. I must be hearing things...

*goes back to sippin on mead*

I'm very surprised Skyrim beat Saints Row 3 for GOTY. Also, did anyone else think Dead Space 2 was too high based on the individual lists? I didn't watch Drew's, but no many people placed in on their lists.

I hope they never do those short skits between games ever again. They were kind of funny at first, but than become tiresome.

The video content they put out this year for the awards is goddamn fucking amazing.

That said, the GOTY discussion is absolute fucking horseshit. Skyrim is my personal GOTY and I haven't played SR3 yet (but want to) so it's not like I'm upset that it won, but it literally makes no fucking sense. SR3 was #1 on 3 lists, Skyrim wasn't on two of those people's lists AT ALL, Ryan hadn't even played the game but voted for it over his #1, and Brad's arguments for Skyrim (again, a game that I love) were complete bullshit and are actually criticisms of the game. And likewise his complaints/criticisms about SR3 could be levied word for word against Skyrim, and usually even worse for that game.

I'm just genuinely disappointed, and unless they specifically address this (they won't) I find it hard to muster any excitement for next years awards at all. The GB guys are some of the very, very few people that I respect the opinions of usually when it comes to games, but now why should I listen to Ryan when he tells me that I really should play Saints Row 3 when he now says a game he has never fucking played is better? Just shaking my head here.

I love how Rayman is one of the roadblocks cuz Brad wanted to cut it. I dunno why but the way Brad kept trolling the guys was kinda funny.

Brad: it's like Bubsy.

Ryan: You are a shitty person.

LOL

B-b-b-b-but Jeff Gerstmann and Kane and Lynch means they're right forever.

I think 4 out of the site's top 10 have no place there. No Nintendo games as well is utterly disgusting.

I think Patrick gave up on Skyward Sword too early. He may had been able to get it into to the top ten as none of the others were really qualified to talk about it, similar to Witcher 2. Also can't believe Mario 3D Land didn't even make the shortlist.

You sir are too easily amused.

It's a small little thing to make their lists a bit more interesting. Maybe a minute or two per video, varied based on their personalities and sets them apart from the crowd. Makes sense in the context of the site due to the Random PC Game feature too.

Give me something unique like that over a boring top 10 list just for clicks any day. GB are the only ones who do GOTY in a fun way.

Patrick said he wanted to play more Mario 3D Land before the end of the year but just ran out of time. Offhand I can't think of any other two Nintendo games that came out this year that would have had a reasonable shot at most people's top 10 lists, and they both came out very late in the year. Even in an ideal situation I don't think Zelda would have made it, but I bet Mario 3D Land would have if it had come out earlier in the year and they had all played it.

Argh opinions make me so angry!!!!!!!!!!!
STOP LIKING THINGS I DON'T LIKE!

All I can say to you is I just didn't like them. I understand your point that it adds something extra, I just think most of those skits went on too long.

Zelda would have absolutely made it in a lot of top ten lists if it wasn't called Zelda.

True story.

They don't play Nintendo games, they don't play Japanese games, they don't play handheld games, they vastly prefer to play on their Xbox over their Playstation and you should really get over it. It's always been like that and while their ignorance towards certain stuff can be a little cringeworthy it's still much better than them pretending to give a shit. I don't see why this always becomes a problem during their GotY awards when the rest of the year is no different.

Yea, which is why their Personal Top Tens are more relevant than the site top ten.

This. I understand it can be frustrating for people who like games/genres that the GB crew doesn't (I'm a big JRPG fan for example), but this is just the personal opinions of a few dudes, people have to stop treating them like this is some sort of fair and equal videogame panel or something.
