War Horse - Totally what I feared it would be, but really not surprised. He should have used the sets to do a proper WW1 film. Last scene was gorgeous. - 6/10

Watched The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Performances ranging from good to great by the entire cast, really enjoyed Daniel Craig's portrayal of Blomkvist, but Rooney Mara's take on Salander really stole it for me. I think this might be one of the few cases where I'm glad they left some stuff out of the movie that was in the book [e.g. Blomkvist sleeping with one of the family members], although I didn't remember that last chase sequence happening. Also thought the ending was a bit abrupt. Overall, pretty damned good. 4/5.

Hah, I ninja edited my post to reflect that... but it doesn't seem I was fast enough.

edit: I like that the Shame discussion is acting like sex addiction is a real thing. Isn't the qualified Jury still out on the matter? Not to mention leaning towards "no"?
No, sex addiction is real. People just say it is a joke when someone famous uses it as an accuse as to why they're cheating left and right.

You can become addicted to anything.

Mentally or physcially?

I've heard the mental but that is about the same thing about being addicted to weed, yes?

it's just a hard thing for me to take seriously i guess

it's like a fat person saying they're addicted to eating food

am definitely curious to see how the film handles it though

Isn't all addiction mental? I've always thought addiction is both mental and physical.

The next time I go see my PTSD psychologist I am going to talk to him about this.

And Count I will read that link after I see the movie. I already know what he is talking about because a friend ruined it for me but I want to see it for myself.

From my understanding even if there are both, it is the physical aspect that is hard to over come (like your body's dependency on nicotine if you're addicted to cigarettes). I don't know... I'm a psych minor so I have had several teachers talk about how sex addiction isn't actually a thing but I've never had them spend a whole lot of time going into the details.

Shame is really about unneeded 5 minute scenes of Carey Mulligan singing New York New York the most tedious way and comic relief waiters.

On the one hand, you can be the funniest person when you really dislike something. On the other hand, I almost NEVER agree with you on almost anything (except in thinking Ikiru to be Kurosawa's best film). I'm torn!

That is true. I am full of zip and quips when I loath things. We also agree that Crimes and Misdemeanors is Woody Allen's best too.

I am watching The Future now and at the 50 minute mark is perhaps in my top 5 scenes of the year and at the 51:30 mark is the start of my favorite moments of score for the year. I have rewatched this scene for the last 20 minutes and don't know if I can finish the rest of the film.

BTW, I decided I am never ever going to talk about Tree of Life around you again though. I don't have that much time unless I decided to devote an afternoon to it.

Midnight in Paris
Really liked it, Was it part funded by the paris tourism commission as everyone int he room was talking about wanting to go once the credits rolled.
I dont know if the film really needed the bitchy fiancée though.

Edit: well that is rather odd!

your ending does sound better - i really like the sound design of the movie as well and how weird it is that altman made it. his commentary track on the dvd is worth a listen if you have some extra time with the disc.

The movie is due back tomorrow but I will eventually buy it when it crawls to its inevitable Blu-ray release.

Half Nelson.

wow what a bitchin' movie. ryan gosling is like the new christian bale for me, i fucking love that man.

thought he was perhaps a little TOO convincing. i.e. took the method acting literally.

Watching the scene once again, I think the score reminds me of a mix of the song from Super 8 with the most optimistic works from Burning Star Core or Astral Social Club. Wait, more so Astral Social Club but with a more drone that Burning Star Core does on their splits. So fucking good.

I actually might put Stardust Memories and Another Woman over Crimes and Misdemeanors, depending on the day.

A friend wrote something on his perception of homophobia in SHAME.

http://filmcans.wordpress.com/2012/01/07/some-thoughts-on-shame/

What do you guys think?

The homophobia thing is a misread. There's no distinction made between that and any of the other acts, nothing in the film to suggest it as a low point. Also, it seems to me that McQueen himself is in no way homophobic, given that he plays a gay man in an erotic situation in his short film Bear.

Another problem is the assumption that the ending is meant to be a turning point in Brandon's life, but it just fails to be convincing. It's not. The film makes it very clear that this sort of thing has all happened before.

The Iron Lady

Really enjoyed the film, but more so Meryl Streep's performance. She was fantastic and better be winning awards for it!

The Dirty Dozen

Fun, classic Hollywood war movie. Wished some of the action set pieces were better but loved the peformances. Such a stellar cast.

The Grey

Shared in the official thread, but surprisingly strong for a January movie. Neeson rocks and Carnahan has a real handle on the atmosphere. Found it a bit repetitive and wish it delved deeper into the reality that these people would be going kind of crazy. They mostly stayed the same. Also, general audiences expecting Taken with wolves are going to f*ckig HATE it. Can't wait to see the reaction.

I saw The Innkeepers last night. Good but not great. House of the Devil is still Ti West's best work. There's a drastic shift in tone about 3/4 of the way through the movie which is pretty annoying. I really wish it had stayed with the more light-hearted tone of the beginning.

Still worth watching though if you are looking for a good ghost story. Probably going to watch Kill List tonight.

Just finished watching The Skin I Live In.

Just wow. I did not see that coming.
Isn't it great? Almodovar is brilliant because the whole time you're watching it you can kind of see where it is going but you don't believe any director would actually take their film there. And then you reach the climax and... yeah. I can't think of too many directors today who are able to craft a story as well as he can.

Yeah I just watched that as well. Aside from the twist, I thought the film looked beautiful and the performances were perfect. I really like Almodovar's style.
And the actress that played Vera was fucking gorgeous.
Great movie.

Has anyone seen this on Broadway/ West End? Saw this last night and quite enjoyed it and it made me really want to see the show. You could tell that this came from a play, and I think Spielberg played it up, especially in the last scene. It is slightly off when compared with other films.

The off screen deaths, lack of blood and gore, the kind of symbolisms used, and the intimate scale of every important scene all made me think of a play, picturing in my head how it would be on stage and how well it would work. Maybe it is deliberate, but at the end i thought the film doesn't add enough that is uniquely filmic. Sure it's nice having a real horse and sweeping vistas and camera moves, but i have a feeling that the cleverness of telling this story with puppets would be a lot more spetacular.

The best thing to come out of War Horse is the main theme played in the trailer. Which is funny, because its one of the worst things in the movie, since it is played to death to the point of being beyond inappropriate.

I read a couple of middling reviews of The Skin I Live In in the publications I usually browse for this sort of thing, but I'm glad to hear that movieGAF likes it so because I'm much more inclined to trust you guys.

I loved the Skin I Live In.

Went in to it not knowing anything about it. Lets just say I was a bit flabergasted went the movie revealed itself.

Thats the worst part. When the movie unvealed the twist I was so confused on what I should feel

That and the music was awesome. That violin picece is amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4Dutkyb_Xk Amazing and apt title too. "Patada en los huevos" (Kick in the Balls).

Just finished watching Senna and it might be the saddest ending I've ever experienced. I have been absolutely on the edge of tears for the past half hour. I already knew the story of his Senna's life, I knew what was coming, but it didn't matter. It hit me really hard. What amazingly well done documentary, but be prepared to be very sad when it ends.

I just finished up back to back watches of Abre los ojos and its US remake Vanilla Sky back to back.

I´m not one to hate on remakes. But holy crap was Vanilla Sky so much worse than the orginial. It seems to have taken anything creepy or unnerving out of the orginial. That and the completly butchered ending made it even that much worse
I really wasn´t sure about if the guy was telling the truth in the orginal and the guy that was interviewing him seemed actually real in the orginal and scared when they guy said it was just a lucid dream while douglas´s character seemed to just acept that he wasn´t real.
. There was just so much more empathy for the César than Tom Cruise´s character.

Ehhhh I personally couldn't stand the theme when it was played in the trailer, shudders to make me think of how they'll ultilize it in the film if i ever get around to seeing it *shudders*.

Just watched Le Havre, which was a nice surprise and one of the best films of the year for me. The ending was very clever and wondrously strange.

I liked it a lot.

Can't go wrong with dat Fass.

I wouldn't say I liked it a LOT, but except for the religious brother (who was both underdeveloped and not cold/distant enough, making Jane's rejection of him a less legible decision and a less strong character moment), it's almost exactly what I'd pictured in my head when reading the novel this past summer. That's a rarity for any adaptation, and while that's not necessarily good or bad, it was surprising. As high-brow romances go, it's worth watching, if only for the good costumes and some nice visuals.
