The Player 1 Podcast Topic

was a little alarmed at the outset (this is gonna be a long one!) but the whole thing whizzed by so quickly that I didn't even notice, I was sad when it ended.

Excellent show, great wrap-up from my favorite gaming podcast. I think I will finally have to play Portal 2 now... thanks guys!

Listening now. Mik, you gotta get into the MLB: The Show league.

I love that game But I am terrible--TERRIBLE--at it. RttS on the Vita will be where it's at for me with that game.

(and before you make the joke--yes, worse than I am a Madden)

Most people are bad at that game. Evens the playing field. Also unlike Madden, you can catch lightning in a bottle and pitch a great game and win 1-0.

Yep. Played about 50 games online last season and had something like a .170 avg. Not going to keep me away though.

Good to hear a lot of positivity in a GOTY podcast. A palette cleanser after listening to 4 hours of Giant Bomb shitting on 40 games so that 1 could be crowned as champion.

I agree.

You guys were able to discuss things you didn't like about certain games, but never got negative about it. I like that a lot. It really is a nice change from other podcasts.

I really want to pick up Giana Sisters, but I can't find it anywhere (even online) in Canada.

I've heard a lot about Minecraft, but it never really interested me until this podcast. That was some great story telling I guess. I totally want to give the game a try now.

I really enjoyed listening to everyone's lists and reasoning. I found Mike's particularly interesting.

The Player One Podcast is definitely the POTY!

Okay, guys look. If you are going to continue to worship the ground Sega walks on, you at least have to acknowledge that they published Aliens: Infestation. Good game!

Phil's kid is totally going to hate games and cling to the one sport his genes will make him perfect for. The lack of attention his dad pays to him will drive him to greatness. When he rides Whimsical Phil to a Kentucky Derby victory, then will you love your jock/jocky son, dad? Will that finally make you put down the controller??!

The name Phil apparently means "lover of horses," so yes, I suppose I would approve of my son mastering the sport of kings.

Nice! I'd love to claim I knew that when making the joke.

I have a bit of the same problem but from a different angle. My daughter just turned one. My wife and I live on some land and are near her farming family. I am terrified that she is going to attach herself to my wife's side and grow up to be a 4-H, cow milking farmer-nerd. She must love tech and sports! Although, I can't wait til she learns how to change the oil in my truck.

Show me a late 20s early 30s male who didn't check out all the Garfield books from the local library and I'll show you someone without a soul

Yeah he is well past his prime now but lets not forget there was a time when Garfield rocked. Second only to Peanuts in awesome holiday specials plus he was the gateway comic to Calvin and Hobbes and Heathcliff. I grew up with orange cat comics and I wouldn't have it any other way

I demand a Garfield: Caught in the Act game club.

Wonder why they haven't updated the graphic to show greg steward/ford or mike? ;)
Laziness.

Library? Scholastic Book Club, man! I owned all my Garfield books.

And did you just mention Calvin and Hobbes and Heathcliff in the same sentence?

I demand a Garfield: Caught in the Act game club.

Oh man, I have that game. It totally sucks, but the first boss is pretty unique. That's about all I remember about it aside from the pyramid level. I used to love Garfield, but I've come to realize that Garfield is kind of not very good. It's down there with Marmaduke, but at least Marmaduke has all of those weird subtexts.

CJ's Garfield room is hilarious.

mik's a great addition to the show. the added pc gaming discussion is great. I probably wouldn't have tried Jamestown when I did had it not been for this show. also, I think he does a better job of articulating why a game does or doesn't appeal to him than most podcasters.

the current 1hour format and crew work pretty well. phil has been hilarious the past couple of episodes. good job.
I think future episodes would benefit from tighter editing. there's a lot of time devoted to characters randomly walking around or fighting battles - a bit boring to watch. if you were to show this gameplay but talk over it, I think the show would be a lot better. also, you introduce each game with a graphic and a bunch of text and give the viewer 10 - 15 seconds to read that. why not integrate this information into your voiceover to make for a more seamless and better-paced experience? finally, there is often a disconnect between what you're discussing and what is occuring in the game. if a character in the english version gives male party members a discount because they're "smart," you should show that while you are doing the voiceover. anyway, I think the core content is good. obviously a lot of research and time has gone into this. hopefully, you can keep some of my suggestions in mind as you move forward and can implement them without too much sweat.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep it all in mind in the future.

I'm thinking the same thing to be honest, I've enjoyed the 2 episodes and I feel bad that while I watch them I'm sort of comparing them to Chrontendo, Dr Sparkle seems to cram alot in when he talks about the games and rarely has as much dead time where its just the gameplay showing. I dunno its just the long pauses just feel awkward. That said I'm really enjoying them so far and really wish I could get off my arse and do something similar for the Game Boy or something.

Also great episode, lost it when I heard the song playing at the end.

I was totally gonna credit you with the SPAZ tip, eznark, but I completely forgot. At any rate--it was a terrific recommendation.

No problem. I think it's worth the $3 or whatever it was just for that adorable message when you launch the game. Game is amazing though. One of those games that I will never really finish playing.

I was surprised Overstrike was forgotten in the 2012 games discussion. That's probably the game I'm most excited about, coming from the team that made Crack in Time.

It's still on my radar as something I'm interested in, but until I see more on it I can't really put it on a most anticipated list. Not after the All 4 One disappointment. :\ ah who'm I kidding I'll be buying it. I can't stay mad at Insomniac.

You guys are pretty much the only podcast that spends any time whatsoever on 3DS so....holy shit Ghost Recon is good. $20 at best buy! It's a steal.

I just wanted to comment on the part about people saying the GOTY podcast didn't have negativity didn't listen to the second half (which I'm sure was a comment made in jest!).

Sure, there was some "hating" on LBP2. But it all seemed lighthearted. It didn't feel like it you were disgusted at the game and that it was the worst thing ever. In a lot of other podcasts, when people put down a game, they treat it like it's the absolute worst thing to have ever been created. There's a lot of anger and hate at a game.

I don't know how to describe it. You can dislike a game, talk about the things you don't like about it, and even make fun of it while still not being negative. I felt that's how everything was handled last week.

But anyway... another fun podcast. Still loving the music choices.

The show has really been great the last few weeks. Adding Mik was just the right seasoning to the mix to really set off the flavors on the palate and give it a nice, strong finish. Mmmm, oak-y.

That's how I took it, as well (although I wouldn't really care if someone had actual vitriol for the game--that's why it's MY choice). And that was the real takeaway from 2011 for me. It didn't really have a clear, runaway GOTY in my mind (though seeing all the plaudits for Skyrim contradicts that, I suppose). There were genuinely wonderful games for every platform and taste. Great year.

It was said in jest. One of the things I love about doing our show is that we can disagree with each other on games - even make fun of each other - and it never feels like it gets mean-spirited or heated.

can you edit next week? i need more 3 hour shows. ;)

Yeah, the Dormer stuff always seem so good natured....!

I really, genuinely don't like LittleBigPlanet. Like, a lot. My feelings may admittedly be a bit heightened due to how much I was anticipating (and ultimately disappointed by) the original.

That said, I really couldn't argue with Mike's reasons for liking the game so much. Especially when his thoughts on that game more or less mirrored my affection for Minecraft. Also, it's a friggin' game. What's the point of getting all upset over such a thing?

Well, I haven't played All 4 One so that hasn't killed my excitement for the game, plus the people working on it have done some great things before (creative director and writer are the people who worked on Crack in Time, same multiplayer director as R2 coop/R3 competitive).

I just loved the trailer, it looks like a game that will have everything I love about Insomniac. Great characters, writing and weapons/gadgets. I just hope EA doesn't send it to die like they do with most of their games these days.

I think the guys on playerone are good at articulating why they don't like games in a interesting/entertaining way. Not a lot of people have that skill.

Floaty jumps sucked balls. Feel free to hate on it for guys like me.
