Wii U Spotted At CES

Check the shots of the controller on previous pages - the slide pad looks completely different the the 3DS slide pad (more substantial, ridge around the edge). If you're talking actual mechanics (the "springy" feeling) well, that's just like, your opinion man.

What were the general impressions on the slide pads at e3? I wasn't following it at the time.

Don't need to check out any shots.

A resting thumb is a resting thumb. If the controller ergonomics are comfortable for a slider, they're comfortable for a stick.

Can you really come up with any design where raising your thumb an additional 1/4 inch is going to be a deal breaker for comfort?

You're making the assumption that Nintendo chose not to use sticks out of the blue without any testing. Does that seem like a realistic assumption to you?

They really should make the controller more stylish but I wouldn't hold my breath with how the 3DS ended up compared to fan mockups...

Fan mock ups always look better.
Because, you know, they aren't limited by reality...

Takes a while to get used to for sure but once I got it it's much quicker to tap the screen than using anything to press in the screen.

There is an algorithm at play when it comes to multitouch screens that approximates (via software) where you're touching. Similar to the autoaim required when you're playing a dual-analog FPS. Much as with a mouse, a resistive with a stylus requires no such algorithm to give you pinpoint accuracy.

I'm literally amazed at all of the people in this topic acting like the 3DS circle slider is the worst control mechanism ever implemented, when its about the same accuracy as a dual shock, but in a much more ergonomic position.

It's also about a million times nicer to use than the PSP nub.

I'm curious how many of the complainers have actually used a 3DS for much time, or if this is just some regurgitated opinion echo chamber bullshit going on.

EDIT: its worse than a 360 or GC stick, I'll admit, but still nicer to use than, say, the classic controller pro with its shitty dual shock style layout of analogues

I had a 3DS for months, I put it above the PSP nub and massively behind a dual shock or 360 pad stick.

And they also need to add a camera on the back of the controller so you can have AR stuff on Wii U too.

Is what the screen shows the reported but never shown urban tech demo or just a default TV pimping image?

Some accomplishment there.

I don't think the 3DS slide pad is nearly as good as the best analog sticks, but it does the job well enough that it doesn't really matter.

It is better than the dual shock sticks though, which were awful from day one and still are.

I really don't give two shits about the cosmetic design of the Wii U, all that matters is that it has the power of Nintendo's first party...nuff said.

This is what it'll come down to for me as well. I can thrash and scream all I want, but the siren song of exclusives will eventually force me to open my wallet and let Nintendo take my money. Goddamn your brilliant, irresistible games, Nintendo!

It's a concave rubber nub...
How is there no grip?

I find it to be a better grip than any DualShock stick, and only a tiny bit worse than the 360's.

Not surprising it's resistive.
With the stylus you can have experiences like kirby canvas curse, mass attack at their best or ouendan. I take that over pinch zooming and even some multi tap.
And more important than everything I'm not drawing my t-shirt motif in animal crossing with fingers...

This is true.

And this is also true.

I miss the days when Nintendo made good hardware, but nice to see some sort of improvements I guess.

Why people keep bringing the stylus into equation, when the WiiU controller is clearly meant to be used with fingers?....

From the E3 reveal trailer:

nintendo-e3_wii-u-zelda-drawing.jpg

that design isn't unrealistic. apple would pull it off

No, not unrealistic at all. You don't need battery compartments on handhelds. Apple's latest phone doesn't even have an LTE radio.
Here's how packed the *current* 3DS insides are:

It's a reasonable concern when you hear that it's resistive and see it being used with a stylus. It's easy enough to miss that it's finger-friendly like the 3DS.

There is no reason to not go with capacitive multitouch screens. Active stylus with pressure sensitivity already exist out there so there goes the lack of precision argument.

And besides, resistive touchscreens make any device look like ass and outdated these days with the screen not being flush with the surrounding bezel.

Why are people bothered by the way the damn console looks? Do you guys stare at it constantly and never bother to actually play video games on it?

Wrong, N64 is (still) the greatest analog stick ever made.

wat

It's lifespan definitely was way too short, but the 8-way thing was a good thing. Worst part of the Dual Shock sticks is that it's a perfect circle, where walking in a perfect straight line is near impossible.

mirror's edge, dark souls, UC 1-3...so many games required me to walk in perfect straight lines. this post sounds like you have parkinson's.

Why are people bothered by the way the damn console looks? Do you guys stare at it constantly and never bother to actually play video games on it?

only on my nintendo systems, because they have NO GAMEZ

Your picture has nothing to do with what he said.

And lol at the dual shock stick hate. Can't walk in a straight line, WTF?

Many people care about their home decor, and that includes TV and everything around it. It's not so much to ask for Nintendo to design something sleek, minimalist, and sophisticated. Wii U and its controller look like something from toys r us.

Wow I really hope that is just a prototype and not the final design for the console. The console looks horribly cheap. I know people have been calling the Wii U pad "etch-a-sketch" for fun, but it really does look just about as cheap as an etch-a-sketch. I mean put that next to an iPad, it's not even close.

The slider on 3DS is whack because there is no form of grip on it.

Well I don't know about you, but I hardly use the slider once I've found the strength of 3D I'm happy with. The lack of grip doesn't really bother me for something I hardly need to use.

I don't think anyone does that. But I also don't see why people can't expect a console to actually look good and not like bland external hard drive.

Er... this thread is basically a picture of the hardware. What else do you want people to opine? It's not like we can look at that single picture and extrapolate it into a varied and intelligent discussion about how the quality of Wii U games will factor into the ongoing search for the meaning of life.

The only real crappy hardware this gen was the OG 360.

And lol at the dual shock stick hate. Can't walk in a straight line, WTF?

I'm sorry, but between the 360 pad and the ancient dualshock design, I'll take a 360 pad any day. Far more comfortable and usable, with much better sticks that don't have deadzone issues. The d-pad sucks, sure, but that's what the classic controller pro is for.

I mean for normal games that aren't drawing app.

For normal games, you'll be using the dual analog portion of the controller and only ever need (and be able) to use one touch-button at a time - with your thumb.

lol I'm talking about the wrong slider aren't I. The 3D slider is perfect.

It's nice to have a nice looking machine, but if it's going to be in one place all the time, and used to play video games, I don't see why it should bother anyone.

Right. Dual Shock has many problems, the circle gate being the least important one.

omg you so smart. it's an OLED

Well, in my defense, the earlier pictures posted in the CES thread were much different. That was literally pencil thin and had no bezel.

I wouldn't have made the comment if I could have verified by, you know, a link being in the OP. But because there was no link, just assumed it wasn't OLED because it didn't match up with the earlier PR photos. I just assumed it was an LG, because, again, no links. And that LG hadn't pulled a switch-er-roo.

Just take a moment to conceptualise how you hold a videogame controller.

Where are your palms?

Why would Nintendo have a large bezel around the screen instead of having the screen flush against it like an iPad does?

I get that, but just make the pad bigger then. As it looks right now the thickness of the frame makes the already small screen look even smaller.

It's not an iPad though. It's a controller. A controller that has a screen in it.

You're right, but there will literally be no one in the general public who will not compare that thing to an iPad.

Pros for capacitive:
-aesthetics
-pinch to zoom

Pros for resistive:
-cheaper
-no cracked screens
-styli that aren't crappy and expensive
-stylus allows drawing and other gameplay possibilities
