Wii U Spotted At CES

Wii U thread.
Still amazes me that there is a 22 page thread about nothing. Also after 6 months I decide to poke my head in the official Wii-U thread. Not doing that again.

So does the U-Pad have the ability to turn on without the Wii U having power? The touch screen was displaying a dimly-lit Wii U logo....

You can turn on almost all controllers without the system being on. I imagine it's the same scenario with Wii U

It's huge, using a stylus or your hand on the screen when holding it sideways like that is going to turn it into a big lever.
Your and my strong manly hands with iron grips will be fine, but think of the children.

ya i understand what you're saying but i think moderate one handed use will be fine and plus you would rest the tablet on your lap when you're using the stylus anyways because trying to hold something steady in the air is awkward.

Ah, people are posting their preconceived opinion about the power of the system and justifying because Reggie didn't say it's 10000x more powerful or some shit.

I thought most of the stuff from CES - keynotes, interviews, have been hilarious and gold

this disappointed me though :( , i need more info, what the fuck is coming out launch day >:(

Anyway, as an aside...

Am I the only one who thinks Reggie has been looking very "Over it" in the last few public appearances he's done? That old spark definitely seems to be gone.

I smell an announced resignation coming soon...

Yes. The 3DS bombing this holiday season has done him in.

Oh wait.
I hate Reggie's smug attitude and the way NOA has handled a lot of business, but they've been and continue to be successful.. so he's probably not leaving yet..

Yea he has seemed like the spark isn't there anymore for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him move on after the Wii U is launched.

They won't wait till E3. Yay!

Nothing today though...

Oh god sales gaff now.

Reggie's full of PR crap.Of course, anyone in his position would do the same. Back in March 2011, he said that there's Wii content coming before E3 and at E3. What we got was Wii Play: Motion released in June followed by waiting 10 months for Kirby and 11 months for Legend of Zelda to come out. The trinity of Jrpgs (Xenoblade, Last Story, and Pandora's Tower) were all no-shows with Xenoblade originally being denied a North American release. Outside of Skyward Sword, Nintendo essentially ignored the Wii.

I know the lack of info has been excruciatingly difficult to bear with, but people need to stop being so impatient - Nintendo have plenty of time to reveal info on the WiiU, and plenty of time to improve it too.

GDC, mark it in your calendars, because we'll get something then.

To be fair, if after the supposed redesign they made it much more powerful, then they'd be shouting it off the rooftops.
You find me one marketer who will downplay the strenghts of whatever he is selling when asked about them.

I just hope that it's at least 3-4x better than 360 and has more ram so it's not bottlenecked and they can make games with a good framerate and good image quality at 1080p.
And if the hardware is kinda weak that it is cheap... 200 euros 50 euros for the games.
I'd buy one then if they have an alternative tradional controller.

If they price it higher it's not interesting because then it's competing with a new high end graphics card or a next gen console for me and there it would fall flat.

Yea he has seemed like the spark isn't there anymore for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him move on after the Wii U is launched.

At the start of his reign, image macros of him quoting his catchphrases and destroying shit with laserbeam eyes prevailed above all else. Now the discussion seems to be about his chin being so shiny. No wonder he lacks his spirit.

If Reggie looks "over it" I'd suspect it is because his relevance at Nintendo is fading fast.

I've felt for a while now Reggie was a marketing gimmick only meant to sell Nintendo as having an American face for the NA market that was memorable. He was meant to be a different kind of personality to reach out to the public that didn't play video games. One that didn't seem like an industry nerd; a Bill Gates.

But he hasn't had much to do for a while now. Nintendo is coasting on Wii sales to what was the original "expanded audience". They're not putting visible effort into making exciting new content for that audience to stoke the fire under the Wii. Reggie simply has nobody he's supposed to be talking to.

It's not that he'll resign because he failed at his job. Rather, his role is being phased out. Nintendo needs to seem like at least 50% a gaming company again rather than a mainstream, Disney-like entertainment vendor. Gamers don't take Reggie seriously, and his attempts to appear "hardcore" are mostly just cute.

Rest well ye gentle giant, may we hear the trembling of your mighty footfall again in our dreams.

I only remember Eliza Dushku from her reoccurring role on Buffy and vaguely for playing the daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies.

At E3, I'd much rather hear Nintendo talk about and show us major third-party support instead of how much of a graphical beast Wii U is.

I agree with all of this. Especially the bolded.

Can someone please give me a short summary of Interview with Reggie?

Will WiiU come out in 2012, between E3 and the end of the year?
-Yes.
Can you tell us anything today? Launch titles? Release dates for any games?
-No.
Is Nintendo awesome?
-Yes.
Will there be a Super Mario game on Wii U at some point?
-Yes.
Wii Yoga.

Can someone please give me a short summary of Interview with Reggie?

Here are some quotes from the interview. Really there was nothing significant said at all.

Reggie said:
“So essentially we will be sharing information throughout the entire year. And so, I won’t say that you’re going to have to wait until E3, but certainly we’re not breaking new news here. No launch date, no launch price, no game lineup. …But we will be sharing a lot of information all through the year on how we will be driving Wii U into households this year.”

Reggie said:
“So, you know, we’re fortunate that we drive our own innovation agenda. We don’t care what any of the… we don’t care what the gaming competitors are doing. We don’t care what’s happening in the broader entertainment landscape. What we’re looking to do is drive a great new experience that’s going to be compelling, that’s going to have consumers say, ‘I have to buy the Wii U to get this new experience.’”

He said that they don't mind about the competence and that they'll focus on bringing a "new kind of experience". So, basically, he's saying that WiiU will be something like a Wii or a DS. I'll be the first to buy it on launch day, but is not difficult to make it at least more powerful that the other consoles in the market right now. We'll just have to wait and see what they show at the E3. I'm fine with something like the Zelda Tech Demo that we saw at last E3.

I think you're wrong. Reggie is a key designer at Nintendo.

It's ironic, because it have been the gamers who loved Reggie in the beginning.

How the Reggienator has fallen.

More serious comment: He'll say what Iwata wants him to say. If Nintendo focuses more on Mario, he'll be the Mario guy. If Nintendo makes ten bloody shooters, he'll be the bloody shooter guy. I think he's flexible in that respect.

Can someone please give me a short summary of Interview with Reggie?
Reggie: "Welcome to the great mountain hall of Nintendo. You have earned the prize of such a perilous journey, and may ask me, the grand administrator of all knowledge, 5 questions."

Faith: "Will Wii U have Super Mario Bros.?"
Reggie: "Yes."

Faith: "Really?"
Reggie: "Yes."

Faith: "Really?"
Reggie: "Yes."

Faith: "So let me get this straight. It will have Super Mario Bros.?"
Reggie: "Yes. At this point, may I remind you that you only have 1 question remaining."

Geoff [dismayed at 4 wasted questions]: "Really?!?"
Reggie: "No, you don't have questions left. Thank you, come again."

This interview was just weird... like Geoff was trying to sell Reggie a Wii U and Reggie isn't all that interested. Their roles reversed.
