Kingdoms of Amalur demo impressions thread [Up On 360/Origin/Steam/U.S. PSN]

Despite telling myself I wouldn't bother with the demo, I got nervous with the number of quite negative impressions. So I downloaded it for PS3, played for a while and then breathed a big sigh of relief. I bloody love it, just like I knew I would. The art-style, the combat, the music, everything just clicks for me. Didn't come across anything really buggy either, and was very pleased to see no tearing, which is the one thing that I do find distracting.

So my pre-order stays in place. Can't wait for it to come out!

It has to be my biggest surprise game of the year as it was not even on my radar until 3 days ago.

That's good because that's about how long the year has been as well. :D

This demo, in my opinion, is the reason why people make demos. I didn't really care about this game either, until trying it. I thought they were pushing the videos and ads so hard because it was lacking, I guess I was wrong.

The combat is by far the best part, especially considering it's an RPG. The video at the end where the monsters are being juggled made even more excited.

There were some bugs/glitches and the invisible walls were a bit jarring, but overall, I will now purchase this game as a result of the demo.

I want to clarify this again: the demo is from a 2-3 month old build. The audio and visual bugs will be fixed, and they have also said that they are finding a solution to the camera problems people are conplaining about.

I haven't gotten up to the 45 timer part yet but what I've played so far I like quite a bit. I like the pace of the game, the combat is perfect for me and it looks like it will scratch that looting itch till Diablo III. I pre-ordered for the Xbox but I'll probably end up buying it on Steam for full retail and play with a 360 gamepad on my PC.

Looking at the official site, the forums have a lot of comments(mostly negative) on the camera. Glad they are looking into it, hopefully they get us 2 to 3 more views for launch :)

So the combat in this game... not all that great?

Seems on par with the combat in fable.

I think this comment exemplifies the one major issue with the combat system: the game provides no form of tutorial that explains the in-depth systems that exist in the combat mechanics, something which is already foreign to most other RPG's.

I've been following this game rather extensively for several weeks now, so I found myself immediately trying to create combos during every combat sequence; but those going into the game blindly are left to hopefully stumble into some of the more complex mechanics amidst their standard hacking, shooting, and dodging. I think that many of Fable comparisons--for the combat, at least--would disappear if the game did a better job shedding light on some of the deeper combat options.

But I'm not the developer, so I suppose it's not my problem to solve.

There's an option in the menus that will show you what special moves you can do and even shows a video of what it looks like.

And its really not nearly as in-depth as you're making it seem. Decent and respectable, but its fairly basic(at least for what levels you can acheive in the demo).

To be fair, it would be an incredibly difficult ask to make it both deep and as varied as it is so I'm pretty happy with it.

Fable 2 did the same thing no ?

But it's very clear from all the level up abilities/stats/etc that the combat will evolve and get more in depth as you progress through the game.

Pulling back the camera this late in development might cause performance problems on consoles(Or Day one patch). A further back camera would show more stuff on screen which could possibly lead to some drop in fps. Plus they have designed the whole game with that camera in mind which might cause more glitches or something if they change it. It's not as simple as putting in a couple numbers and moving the camera back.

On PC this wouldn't be a problem.

Like I said, its definitely respectable considering the genre and scope of the game. Obviously a step above just button mashing, but its not what I'd call 'deep'. At least not yet.

I have to ask this again because I'm an idiot...Do we have to save the demo on our HDD to get the ME3 crossover items or does it save to our Origin accounts or what?

Just how in-depth it'll get is kinda hard to tell, though. I played as a pure hack and slash guy and put my points into upgrading my moves and whatnot, and it was good, but I think it will plateau at some point short of 'deep'.

Could be wrong, of course, and it depends on how you define 'deep'.

Do you have to play through the Well of Souls bit every time you play the demo? I'd like to skip ahead to the 45min free play part because that was so much better.

I'm definitely intrigued. The game seems like the full product will be awesome. I wish Fable had been closer to this game in terms of design.

No, you don't. I tried the demo last night and ended up playing the 45 minute window about 5 times. During the most memorable period, I found a great warhammer very early and spent the rest of the 45 minutes literally hammering the shit out of every other character I came across, killing everyone of them except the story forwarders who just wouldn't die! God Damn, that was fun! The demo clearly has a few issues; sound loss, weird graphic hiccups when coming out of buildings, very loose camera control and an illplaced (for me anyway) playscreen map, but I certainly had fun with it. Don't like the lockpicking, don't care for the lack of loot in situations where there should be loot everytime (weapons rack SHOWING weapons, not with every character you kill or come across dead, etc.,) but none of those for me are complete game killers at this point.

Seems to me, at the very least, to be a really good first effort from the demo...

All right. Even though I'm not interested in it whatsoever I guess I can monkey around for 45 minutes...

Fair warning - even doing that might make you feel as though you deserve a refund. Somehow.

Terrible 'game' in pretty much ever way, for me. Nothing like the Fable-esque clamours I have heard. Awful storyline, terrible acting and accents, woebegotten pop-in (one character was chatting with a hollowed out hole in his torso where his head and neck should have been for a good 12 seconds before they appeared), a lockpick minigame that is shameful, lackluster clunky combat, annoying catching/blocking scenery (an abomination we shouldn't have to suffer these days) and.... *urgh*. It is everything I *hate* about such games. McFarlane designed unlockables were almost not even enough to prompt me to keep going and explore for the full 45 mins.

I'll be very disappointed if gamers support EA for this turgid nonsense. That and, I guess, the animation for shooting staves is well done. That's about all the praise I can muster.

The ONE decent thing - and credit where it is due to EA, who are fairly consistent with this - is the sound when played through a home cinema system.

Extremely disappointed in KoA.

-UI is bad, bad, bad. Unresponsive and works terribly with the mouse. Switching out gear takes forever. Have to go through 3(!!) tabs just to equip a damn weapon.
-Camera is awful.
-Talking to people is annoying. If I'm skipping through all the dialogue in an RPG then something is very, very wrong. Cutscenes are awful, do away with them.
-Ugly graphics, art, and animations that look like a badly made WoW clone.

Would only buy this game if it was on sale for $5 on Steam.
I can not refute any of these points. Pretty disappointed in this so far. :(

I'll play a couple minutes more to see if it has some good vistas or a larger gameplay hook, but nothing about this seems particularly outstanding so far. Just... mediocre in most of its aspects with bad graphics.

So you can skip through the Well of Souls portion? I only had time to play through that portion last night. I'd love to skip directly to the open portion of the demo.

Me too. I actually love how WoW-ish the art is.

Yeah, I love the art in this game. I've never played Fable or WoW so the similarities dont bother me like it seems to bother others. So it's actually fresh for me personally. I do love Skyrim's look as well, but I tire of the gritty, realistic look after awhile.

Really liking the lighthearted, classic fantasy style of everything in this game.

I found the game not only aesthetically terrible, but the Reckoning combat system is just gross. Power kills for extra XP, but lets call them "unravelling fates." It felt like I was having a comic explained to me by a mean 13 year old kid. "And this guy's REALLY BRUTAL and he loves to CHOP HEADS OFF." What? Come on. Give me something here. At least War in the North knew what it was.

Curt Shelling posted today to some of the feed back both good and bad:

http://forums.reckoning.amalur.com/showthread.php?2362-So-what-exactly-makes-this-game-special&p=42763&viewfull=1#post42763

I hope this game does well. New IPs that are good seem few and far between, especially in the large scale RPG world.
This is an important post because it really notes that the devs see everyone's feedback, and is interested in remedying the problems. Especially the camera issues.

Also, for all those saying "zomg the combat is so simple" YOU'RE LEVEL FREAKING ONE. At most, you can probably hit level three. Do you really think that this is the full extent of the combat? If anything, it allows for far more options than any other game at such a low level. I'm looking forward to seeing what the game offers at higher levels.

Here are my impressions (PS3)
1. huh this guy I made looks like Thor......cool
2. game is pretty fun combat is simple
3. cant hear NPC talking and boxes breaking sfx no longer working.....ok just a glitch
4. sound cut out again, and when entering a conversation it automatically backs out not a good sign :(
5. Troll fight was cool,
6. Sound cut out again outside, come on really?
7. Sound gone yet again, good thing I turned the subtitles on
8. Game froze........F**K!!

Not a good way to convince me to buy a game. Honestly WTF with the games this gen, especially the WRPG's so many bugs. I don't pay $60 to wait for patches, shame really the demo had me interested but this is definitely a wait and see now.

^^^^^
Once again, the build is three months old and it was either put out a demo with issues that they've fixed in development, or not put out a demo at all. Many of those bugs have been confirmed as fixed.

War in the North is actually the first game I thought of. And I certainly enjoyed that for what it was.

I have to say, my first bad impression has been softened somewhat. I can see potential in the combat, being a mage is pretty fun, and there's a certain coherence to the art style that can't be overlooked (but is understood by few studios) which alleviates some of the weak technical and art design (models, ugh) issues. The camera is too close and too low, though.

I'll probably give it a chance when on steam sale.

I dont think many people are saying the combat is overly simple or anything. Its just not 'deep' or complex or anything. At least not in the demo.

Its possible that it'll get far more in-depth later on, but thats not a given. And just because you are given a fair few moves at low levels(and I could definitely name other games that give you more moves this early) doesn't mean there's going to be an equal amount of progress throughout mid and late levels. Its entirely possible that to make the game accessible and fun throughout your early playing of this, they've given you a good amount of the combat system to mess around with from the get-go.

I'm looking forward to seeing what its got later on, but I'm keeping my expectations in-check. And that goes for many promising elements of the game. What seems great now might not hold up at later levels, and this is something important to get right in a game where you're gonna be pouring in 100+ hours. We're just gonna have to see.

EDIT: According to that article(thread) I just read, its only supposed to be about 5% of the combat in the demo. Thats quite a claim and he seems to be getting a little defensive, but hopefully he's not exaggerating.

Is there a list of the issues that they identified and addressed? I am not taking anything in good faith anymore, as I just refuse to pay for broken games (skyrim.....)

This post should be required reading for anybody curious about the combat at later levels. And check out the last 30-45 seconds of the combat video if you want to see some examples of higher level ad-hoc combo chains.

I'm actually enjoying the animation in this game... enemies, friendly NPC's, and the female player characters. It's a mixed bag, but more good than bad.

And the controls are pretty good... it's really just some issues with the camera that make them feel "floaty" or "clunky" as some have described them.

I'll likely buy this. After getting word they cleaned up the bugs on the PS3 version. Not dealing with another Skyrim fiasco.

i've played through the demo 6x 0_o

Honestly I don't know....

If these are currently Gen Graphics then I'm not sure i like them. They look pretty close to SWTOR. The vibrant garish coloring everywhere. The big glompy style hands and feet the cartoonish stylings.

I want more Rift art style.

These games with these walls to guide you along a railed pathing. That promise you YO! Just play the game will open up more we promise. I could not jump off and die at edge of cliff ledges at all.
