30.) Baltimore Ravens
Record: 12-4
* Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona St.

He's been drawing comparisons to Ray Lewis since he got to Tempe, and hopefully Lewis will be around for another year to mentor Burfict. But either way, the Ravens have to consider what they'll do, as retirement talk now is a reality for their legendary linebacker, and Burfict is the kind of player who could develop into a star in his own right in that defense. He is instinctive and rangy, and plays with an edge. He developed a bit of a reputation as a guy who was prone to the personal foul, but if he channels that energy, Burfict could be a very good one. He has a ton of experience as an immediate freshman starter and reads the game pretty well.

Mel is a Baltimore Guy and Fan and I LOVE THIS PIC

Arians might be retiring and/or not renewed

Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians watches quarterback Ben Roethlisberger work with receivers in practice.

The Steelers coaching staff could undergo its first major change in the Mike Tomlin era because offensive coordinator Bruce Arians might not return in 2012, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has learned.

Arians, 57, is in the final year of his contract with the Steelers, and it is unclear if he is retiring -- something he considered last year -- or not having his contract renewed.

Arians has been the offensive coordinator since Tomlin became head coach in 2007. He was told last week by Tomlin that he would return in 2012, and Tomlin even indicated as much in a press conference one day after the Steelers' playoff loss in Denver.

However, team president Art Rooney II indicated on Tuesday that some members of the coaching staff were considering retirement.

Arians considered retiring after the 2010 season because of health problems and other issues. He even skipped attending the NFL combine in February while he mulled his decision.

...can't say I'd miss him, honestly.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/18/jim-irsay-takes-the-rob-lowe-story-to-a-new-level/

We probably would be done talking about the Rob Lowe Report now, except that Irsay decided to weigh in on Twitter with what has to be the most bizarre 140-character missive he has ever written (and that’s saying something):

“My sources tell me Rob will star in an epic remake of ‘Deep Throat’ with aging porn stars and 4 finger circus clowns!”

I’m not sure if Irsay is taking a swipe at Lowe’s infamous 1980s sex tape, or if he’s just trying to come up with a Twitter report of his own that’s even weirder than Lowe’s, but this has to be the strangest thing we’ve written about in quite some time.

The only thing that could make it even more bizarre is if it turns out that Lowe’s report was right.

Or if Irsay’s report is right.

Irsay is a freakin nut job

Packers-GAF,

You think Ted Thompson will actually go get a nice free agent or two this year? Surely he realizes at this point that he was just being cheap with Cullen Jenkins which really cost us dearly this last season.

And I don't mean go out and win the "XXXXX Sweepstakes" or whatever but get some defensive help for this team?

I think it's a lot more likely than in a usual season, but I'm not quite sure on the salary cap figures. After a Wells resigning, tagging Finley, the big ones are out of the way, I think.

If I remember, I thought I read that we'll have more salary room than most teams, and if that's the case I do think TT will actually go out and try to find a player or two this year. Obviously nothing huge, but yes.

Hell no.

I just hope he's less cocky this year about bringing in talent.
Everyone and their brother know the D-Line is a problem.

Only potential thing he might do is trade up/back. That's about as risky a thing I see him doing.

Edit: Goddamnit alt why do you post whenever I do? :jnc

Don't you guys still have Washburn running the Wide Nine? I didn't think Castillo did a terrible job in the 2nd half this past season. Granted the Eagles Safeties and LB's are among the worst in the league. There's only so much a DC can do.

Still as in they haven't made any changes. Some talk about Washburn possibly going to work Fisher again but yeah so far the Eagles have him on staff. I don't have a problem with the scheme if only they acquire great talent at LB to counter the gaps created by the DLINE.

Eagles D only looked better the last four games because the offense finally woke up, whcih allowed the D to play only against the run, and they were also facing some mediocre to terrible QBs in Mat Moore, Sanchez, Cowboys without Romo, and Grossman. Nothing to brag about.

The problem is Juan isn't really a DC since the scheme he runs is dictated by the DLINE coach, so yeah there is only so much he can do especially if he is there solely to be a figure head.

I just don't think we're fixing jack squat with pick #28. We're really in a world of hurt if Nick Collins can't come back. Charles Woodson might have to move up to safety finally but we also need Tramon Williams and Sam Shields to not be hot garbage.

Clay Matthews also needs help on the other side with SOMEBODY. Desmond Bishop looked decent against the Giants (little help it was though).

Charles Woodson was the last hit free agent we've gotten and he's a year or two out from retiring so isn't it about time for Ted to get somebody?

Desmond Bishop is a great player. I don't care what that racist Eznark says. Not to Clay's level but certainly not "just a guy".

OLB opposite Matthews would be nice but when we had Jenkins even journeymen like Walden did a good job. DE, DE, DE! Nein nein nein nein!
AJ Hawk is a froggin' liability in every facet of the game. Can't cover. Always late to the ball. Meh blitzed. And most importantly: too expensive.

GET THAT GUY OUTTA HERE

I think Collins will be back but only time will tell.

More important to get another CB than a Safety. Someone who can play with the big boys.
Woodson was mostly useless against the Giants because he had to cover. He more or less plays "safety" now anyway.
Sam Shields is a hilarious joke unless it's running stride-for-stride with the receiver. Can't tackle for shit. Hopefully he improves with a proper off-season, though.

3 most important positions to get: DE, ILB, and CB.

I'm okay with another elite OLB as well. I think we can get by with a mediocre pass defense if we can just get the pass rush back.

LT laying it out right now, saying Sanchez is pampered. One of the best inside a locker room interview I've seen.

If the Jets give Sanchez more than one year to "improve", they're officially a joke franchise again.

See my edit.

Also I think they like Zombo a lot and still are going to be hoping him and Neal progress.

The bad defense because of the lack of pass rush. Sure Peprah is dogshit but if you have guys getting home/putting up pressure, the QB makes bad throws, gets sacked, or gets hit.
You don't need a Pro Bowl safety back there... Our secondary is godly but even they can't cover forever...

You can't just dump Sanchize. It's a complete indictment of the FO. Move up in the draft to take him, build the team around him by consistently adding weapons to the passing attack then drop him? No chance whatsoever.

Surely 4 years is enough? :\

I feel like the case will be built this summer for dumping him and they'll put up with him for another season and if there isn't improvement, they can move on safely.

Now I haven't watched many Jets games but looking at the stats for just a ballpark figure I'm wondering why Sanchez is talked about here like he's a really terrible qb. I don't see anything suggesting he has regressed (except maybe yards/attempt?).

What am I missing? Game-time decision making types of things?

Again, haven't seen a lot of Jets games.

I was going to post this. I think if the Jets are gonna move on from Sanchize, that means Ryan and the rest are out as well.

He's in a "win now" market, with a "win now" team and a "win now" coach. Simply put the Jets aren't interested in waiting any longer for him to evolve.

I think the issue is that Sanchez has (or had) an elite offensive line, an elite defense, and a very good running game all at one point. From what I've seen, Sanchez is often the weak point for that team. His completion percentage is truly awful though and at the very least, he needs to be throwing the ball far less.

edit: So I guess you could blame a lot of it on coaching...he still misses 5 yard checkdown passes on a regular basis.

Win what? The Jets are a perpetual loser franchise and it's their propensity to put up with bad talent like Sanchez and O'Donnell and all the other tools is the reason why they never win.

What is Gamlbing-GAF's take on the lines?

Baltimore +7.5 v. New England
Over/Under 50 1/2

Money line: Baltimore +255, New England -300

NY Giants +2.5 v. San Francisco
Over/Under 43 1/2

Money line: Giants +120 49ers -140

I've seen a few different money lines, but these are in the ball park. I'm going to be in Vegas, so I'm thinking of popping on the Under in the AFC game and maybe throwing $50 on Baltimore on the money line.

You kidding me...it is the NFL everyone is trying to win. Win what? The game.
insert Herm Edwards gag here

Up until this season they were in the AFC Championship game the previous two years, they are a team that can win now. Only problem is their biggest need is the QB position. No major improvements from Sanchez next season it really will be time to move on.

Schotty is gone, and Sanchez can deflect some of the blame on him. That Offense was horrendous, with Pennington, Clemens, Favre and Sanchez. Sanchez was Schotty's to develop and he failed. If he can't get it done with a new OC then yeah Jets are going to cut ties. LT interview other then the pampered line was more a scorching of Santonio. My theory is Sanchize beat out Santonio in the late night Upton sweepstakes.

He's terrible. Everyone cries about the slants, well eventually you're going to have to come up and press, and that'll give you a shot downfield Where the fuck is the deep ball? I refuse to believe that they aren't calling double moves off slants, impossible. Guy plays scared.

Early in his career the motto was don't fuck up, but at some point he has to grow up and starting the throwing the football. Stop playing like a pussy.

Accuracy isn't very good, but the guy won't throw the rock until the receiver comes open, doesn't anticipate breaks/throwing windows. Someone needs to sit his ass down and show him videos of Kurt Warner.

Jets gave up nothing for him though. They moved into the top 5 from the mid teens and only gave up a second round pick and fringe starters/depth. Every team in the league would make the deal the Jets did to get into the top 5.

He's fucked. Going into the season I knew he would have a tough time. Only returning receivers were Holmes/Keller, they bring in two new guys and a rookie. Have fun getting on the same page. Now he has to learn a new system, and get on the same page with another new receiver because Plax won't be back, maybe two if they cut ties with Holmes which I doubt. Tough times.

I think this has to be a top priority. I'd be surprised if they didn't draft an OLB, but I will be a little surprised if they draft one early on. They seemed to like Zombo but he was hurt too much, and Jones came on more at the end. Fans loved So'oto for some reason, maybe he can develop into more than a name.

I agree about Bishop. He's good, liked him all year. Miles above Hawk, which you're dead on about. DJ Smith might be better than Hawk by next year, unless something changes.
Woodson has been getting worse and worse as a cover guy, but last year made up for it with better pass rush and safety and CB play around him, he could blitz more. Didn't have the luxuries this year.

There's only so much they can do, but they need to hope OR PREVENT Williams and Shields don't FROM regressING anymore, maybe even improve?? and Collins can comeback healthy.
If that happens, perfect scenario, they draft a DE and find an OLB or get one from somewhere. Too hard to predict TT, so I'll stop talking, but those are my thoughts.

Just caught the LDT segment on the replay of Inside the NFL. Besides the "pampered" comment, he also said the Jets lockeroom eventually degenerated into the worst locker room he's ever been in. Also said that he didn't appreciate all of Rex's hot air, he felt it put a target on their backs.

I'm not that big on either Francois or Smith.
Put them together and you have a decent LB but neither are ideal.

Tramon, I don't know what his deal was. Injury probably. He probably had a separated shoulder Week 1.

Yeah, I know about Tramon. Wonder if that screwed with him all year.

Keep in mind both Smith and Francois were rookies, I'm keeping my mind open on them. At least they won't be getting $5 million next year

I think we need more wide receivers

Gurley!!

I think they'll keep Driver if he takes a paycut.

Eznark is Matt Millen?

Seriously though... think they keep Driver?

If he takes a paycut. If not I hope he retires and joins the staff. Cobb showed he was pretty courageous and ran good routes over the middle when given the chance. He could definitely be a black Welker type of player.

Obviously defensive line is the need, but as always I say draft best available.
