Netflix question, had 2 movies scheduled to come today... didn't. So what to do? call? report they didn't come on the date they promised? Is there a chance they come say tomorrow? Also, Netflix had a delivery time of today and when i checked again today the date was gone and it chanced to when i will return.

Two Lovers - James Gray
Pretty great, as all his previous films. James Gray is one of the finest young american directors, I'm sure he could do great things.

Fake edit: found this quote on IMDB: "Apparently I'm the dramatic version of Jerry Lewis. Someone wrote that I'm the object of Gallic fetish". Uh oh... he might be onto something.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Wasn't expecting much, and was very pleasantly surprised. I'll be waiting anxiously for a sequel.

Just wait. You can click the "report problem" link in your queue but they still make you wait a few days to be certain something went wrong.

I'm familiar with Graysmith's book but who do Fincher and crew think was the Zodiac?

Never heard that before.

I don't have the dvd any more, but they talk about it on the commentary track. They just think a couple other people are much more likely to be the killer than
Arthur Leigh Allen
.

Sorry I can't be any more specific than that.

The Ox-Bow Incident (1943)

Has anyone seen this one? I'm almost certain that someone recommended it to me earlier on in the thread (or maybe it was the last Movies You've Seen Recently thread), I only got around to watching it today but man, I thought it was great.

It's fairly simple but it's bleak, grim and I think pretty far ahead of its time in its brief handling of the moral questions that it raises concerning lynch mobs and frontier /vigilante justice. Henry Fonda stars as the main character (I guess), I'm not even sure of his name (Gil maybe?), but it doesn't really matter - the main character is pretty much just a passive onlooker like the viewer, watching 3 innocent men being condemned to immediate death by hanging. It's pretty powerful considering it's almost 70 years old, and the lighting in the film was spectacular. The majority of the film pretty much takes place on one set but you really don't care because it's so well shot.

Great movie.

Contains one of the best shot scenes in history IMHO, just magnificent. So simple and perfect: spoilers of course

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but TSPDT updated their 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films list. New entries:

The Tree of Life
A Separation
The Artist
The Descendants
Hugo
Certified Copy
Take Shelter
Drive
Moneyball
Melancholia
Star Spangled to Death
Another Year
Old Joy
Margaret
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

i wonder what the thread caused star spangled to death/flaming creatures to pop on these lists.

it's like all this obvious stuff and then a ken jacobs film. i need to look into the math behind these lists or something.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - Pretty decent, but I was expecting more twist and stuff like that. I'm not sure I understand all of it though, so much going on. Direction was really good, also dat cast. Settings was perfect too. Overall enjoyable, but the complicated story made it hard to follow at times and the ending was not really satisfying. Loved the last scene - 8/10

The Artist?! Are you fucking kidding me. That film will be EXACTLY like The King's Speech and no one will remember it in two years or so. The rest look great though.

Expendable, do you actually dislike The Artist, or are you just mad that's it's getting a lot of positive recognition?

It is a fine film. I enjoyed it. Just one of those movies that provides absolutely nothing to talk about afterward besides, "oh, that was charming." It feels like a hollow shell of silent classics, and does absolutely nothing new. There isn't anything wrong with that, but when people start considering it an amazing, brilliant film and the #1 of the year, that is when I raise my eyebrow.

Well the list is called the Most Acclaimed films... hard to say it hasn't been rather acclaimed. If it makes you feel any better, Social Network is kicking its ass all over the place at #16

It's really not hard to see why critics are swooning so hard over The Artist. I'm seeing it this weekend (wide release) with fairly high expectations. Even if it disappoints, I'm positive it will be better than that awful fucking George Clooney movie everyone seems to love for some reason.

Regarding the list, I would be more baffled at the inclusion of Moneyball, which is good but also safe and forgettable. There is a movie no one will be talking about in a year. Oh, and I really need to check out Old Joy. Wasn't a huge fan of Meek's Cutoff, but Wendy and Lucy is one of my favorite flicks of the 00's.

Human Centipede 2: Holds up really well to the good stuff that was the first one, infact, it could've been far better than the first one.. but in the end it doesn't go too far into extreme territories, like i was expecting it to go.
The tortures especially, were a bit too tame (though the rest of the fucked up world made up for them, in a way); still a worthy successor to the first one, so i highly recommend it.

Super: Very nice, i usually hate this kind of premise (nerdy comicbook movies), but this movie had the balls to go where Kick Ass was supposed to go.
So basically, it's good, unlike KickAss.

The Descent: Pretty badass horror, with a very nice ending
(yes, it totally fooled me)
.
Marshall seems to always stay between generic and competent, so they generally end up being good entertainment.

Dog Soldiers: Well, admittedly, this was rather trashy, but it had enough cheesy/funny moments, to make it worthed.
Its low budget nature though, was quite cumbersome.

Attack the block: i can see why so many people disliked it based on the main cast, but i digged it instead, a breath of fresh air.
Though it didn't surprise me in any way past that, so i wouldn't say it's amazing or anything.

Haywire was enjoyable, but a bit of a letdown. The action's great and I love the tone but too much of the 90 minute runtime is spent on its uninteresting/sloppy story. Would have liked a better script and a few more minutes of ass-kicking.

Man On A Ledge is built from parts that you've seen a thousand times before but it's assembled well. Solid little movie. I'd say both of these would be good rentals.

Are you joking? The ending of the film sets up countless possibilities for a sequel to Rise also taking place before Planet and the filmmakers have already said they'd like to do a sequel eventually.

The credit sequence pretty much filled the gap via a graphic. Any movie in between would just feel like pointless filler. I would be interested in how they could make a compellling movie between Rise and Planet.

Watched Zodiac for the first time, it felt a bit slow at times but I loved it.
Although the stabbing scene of that couple was pretty disturbing, what a way to go. That was the scene that really stuck with me after watching it.

longggg and sentimental.. had its moments but w/e im heartless i guess

i did like the movie bits a lot more than the guy
pining over the girl for 30 years

These Amazing Shadows - Unfortunately not a doc on movies, but on the National Film Registry. So that was kinda a bummer for me. It was mildly entertaining and mildly interesting. 5/10

The Count of Monte Cristo - Liked the leads (Caviezel & Pearce!), thought the acting was fine, the sets/atmosphere great and the story amazing. I loved the themes of love, friendship, betrayal and ultimately revenge. The movie did have some problems with pacing and it was pretty weird no one recognized Edmond Dantes
when he came back, I know it's been years and he was presumed dead
, but still. 7/10 Note to self: read the book.

The lead deserves every acting award.

I highly recommend you watch the French mini-series. It is my personal favorite adaptation of the novel. Gerard Depardieu does an incredible job as Edmond Dantes. Mercedes is absolutely stunning in this one. You could stare at her for hours.

Since that's his only role (going by IMDB), i wonder how much "acting" was involved there.
Could be like Kinski, half actor/half crazy.

My main gripe with the film, is that i found the house bits more interesting than the torture/centipede ones.. well it's not really a gripe, but now i think Tom Six should concentrate more on wicked/grotesque material, rather than gore itself.
Reminded me of the dinner with the girl's family in Eraserhead, good stuff.

It's all acting. I've met the guy. He is perfectly normal IRL.

I can not wait to see what they do with three. Six has said it will be set in the US, make 2 look "like a Disney movie" and that it will be his favorite.

I wonder if it will be made to look like a Hollywood remake or if it will be found-footage.

Well shit, props to the guy then.

Well at this point i have complete trust in the guy.
The passage between 1 and 2, gave 2 a completely new identity and life, so in the least, i know he's not going to go lazy and bank on the original idea.

EDIT: It just came to me now, where the fuck is
my human-unicorn-centipede (penis on forehead --> anus)? I hope he goes with this idea in the next one.

- I was pretty disappointed with this movie. I was aware of the bad reviews it got out of sundance, but something about it just really got me interested in seeing it. After finally watching it though, I found myself agreeing with most the criticisms. Even though it was depressing seeing these people fall apart, it felt a bit melodramatic at times. Like the motivations for the characters just felt so flimsy, to me anyway. Not only that, the characters weren't really sympathetic at all. I don't think I liked a single person in this movie. Also, there was this scene where they intercut footage from a real life tragic event during part of the climax; which just came off as extremely jarring and pretentious.

But despite all that, it's still lingering in the back of my mind. Not sure why, but I still liked the bleakness of it all. I get the feeling that this movie is gonna be on my mind for a while. Though I can still say that the concept is better than the execution.

Thanks, I'll keep this in mind.

The complete line-up for the IFFR has been announced and it's very, very disappointing. All I am going to see is Ace Attorney as other movies I want to see (Hugo/Shame/Dangerous Method) will appear in cinema's later or I'll wait for the dvd/blu-ray.

edit: just noticed Herzog's Into The Abyss will be shown on tv tonight, wat? Isn't that documentary brand spanking new?

THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG
Finally got to watch this, it was great. I'm a sucker for lighting and shadows in movies and I've never seen any animated movie do it better than this (Dr. Facilier, wow!), it's totally like they went all out to slap CG movies on the wrist and came quite close. I could watch it again right now just for dem visuals.

Also enjoyed the simple way the story progressed in, except perhaps for the Voodoo lady scene, they didn't need to spell out Tiana's real desire - though she didn't catch it from that scene which was good at least. Good music and song numbers, fun characters, not much bad stuff to say at all. Except that it's a shame it apparently didn't make Disney enough money to keep doing 2D animation?

The Magic Box (1951)

A film about the largely forgotten William Friese Greene, who the film claims made the first movie camera and projector (I'm not entirely aware of how accurate the story is). Oddly stuctured and very British (which I suppose is expected as it was made for the "festival of Britain"), it took me a while to start enjoying it but I liked it in the end.

I demand you tell us which channel.

Lars and the real girl - Kind of sweet but for some reason I kind of got tired of the overall tone by the time the film ended, watching this and Drive has me convinced ryan gosling is good at playing autistic characters though! ** 1/2

Eyes without a face - It's artistically solid and competent, but It didn't engage me as much it should have, because I found it ultimately pretty hollow in terms of characterization which made it hard for me to care about anything that's going on, it's not without it's moments though, as they were some damn good sequences. ***

The Girl with the dragon tattoo (2011) - It's stylistically very awesome and I haft to give Fincher props for elevating a rather average script with his signature sense of craft, but I don't think he elevated it well enough, as the pacing was pretty spotty and the film was about 20-minutes to long, and lost a lot of it's momentum towards the end, the solid sense of atmosphere, rooney mara and the style was enough to make it worth the price of admission at least, although I don't think I'll have any desire to watch the film again, when it hits blu-ray *** 1/2

I demand you tell us which channel.

I just spent way too much time looking for this info. Doesn't appear to be airing tonight. So... wtf?

If I recall correctly &Divius lives somewhere in Yurop.

Oh yeah. I believe Germany or the Netherlands.

I'm so glad to see we're safe from detective GAF in here.

There's a link in the post you quoted, the one about a festival he's going to attend. Maybe it's a clue as to his whereabouts !
