Diablo 3 Beta [Beta withdrawal underway!]

I want to try the new changes that are in the game. They sound pretty good for the most part. I like the double discovery without the hassle of the scrolls. The only one I don't think I like is not having the cube to break down stuff in the field.

The first thing I do every day, is check battle.net. Every time, I think; no problem; it will be out soon. Not :(
So I will be checking battle.net daily for the coming weeks.

I even started playing LoL. My downfall is certain.

I don't think the removal of the cauldron and cube is going to be that big of an inconvenience. Other than selling white items to vendors in town for gold you don't have to worry about the white items. Blue items are the lowest level that can be salvaged and it will take much longer to fill your inventory with items to salvage for crafting now so you won't have to be constantly running back to town.

I am interested to see if the blue items are going to break down into the white and blue crafting materials or if the recipes for the crafted item are going to be modified to not include the white crafting materials at all. Should find out soon enough!

This game is taking way to long to come out. Its Versus all over again. Does a game really need 6 years in development time? I know they are top tier PC devs, but taking so long, usually kills some hype.

I think that you have to understand that is contrary to what quick look at the game's genre might suggests, Diablo games (and Blizzard games in general) are known for having timeless qualities that are hard to create, in addition to a very heavy multiplayer component.

Versus is a single-player affair with a lot of internal issues where the last incarnation (the one that did not get cancelled like previous versions) of Diablo 3 is a stable development process where supposedly all the assets are already done, all the management part (manual mostly, boxart, game data, infrastructure, servers, certifications everywhere, etc) is done - what is left is an iterative polish to make sure that the game will remain awesome 3-4 years later, not only when it is released.

To some, it is already too late, as they are looking this matter from a purely graphical standpoint. For some, it does not matter when it will come out, as it will be on the gaming menu for at least a half decade - but most likely for more.

Blizzard has a knack to make games that a lot of people say are "visually outdated". The fact is however, that they are played well beyond their release dates by millions of people. Even more so than games that look great once released, but mostly age poorly.

A testament to this success is the fact that I played Diablo 1 till late last night and enjoyed the hell out of it. And yes, also visually. I would prefer playing, Diablo I and II to playing Gothic anyday, which many said was a graphical masterpiece at the time of release. Looking at those screens now I'd go with Diablo I or II any day.

Besides that tweaking and as a result delaying the game is something that happens. I'd rather they did so than playing a game that's unbalanced. One of the great things about Diablo II was the balance and online play with others. Such things take time and the audience is evermore demanding. So I understand the possible delays.

Still think they might not even come though... with Blizzard only time will tell.

Yeah, best fun I've had playing a videogame in quite a long, long time actually. My wrist/hand was fucking killing me though. Game needs an auto-attack function badly.

It works fine on windows 7. Just make sure you patch it to version 1.09 and turn off the explorer in your task manager. That way the colours won't get messed up.
You can alt+tab back into the game, once the explorer is turned off.

Yeah, this actually was always making me think why any of those games had/has autoattack function, it should be such obvious thing to implement.

Ugh, I really want to get flagged. Already bought the annual pass for WoW partially for the D3 lol. Will have my new PC too, would love to break the cherry with D3 beta =D

I chose not to go for the annual pass. Mostly because I dont want to play WoW anymore but also because I want the collectors edition.

If you buy the collector's edition, the amount will be deducted from your one-year WoW subscription. (So you'll pay $60 for the D3 CE, but pay $60 less on your one-year WoW subscription.)

Every month or so I give a little cringe because I still have not been accepted into this beta. Takes me a day or so, then I shrug it off.

I swear it's this little itch that wont go away.

Aye. It honestly has got to a point that I while I crave so intensely for it, I convince myself that the release will be oh so much sweeter if I never play the beta.

Fuck that. GIVE ME BETA! Please? Like for real.

I'm very happy with the changes, specifically the return to Str, Dex, Int, Vit. I hated the stats they were previously using, the all inclusive Attack stat in particular. It made items seem very similar to one another, since that's the primary stat you were looking for on any piece.
i concur. it's critical that they nail the loot systems perfectly and blizz seems acutely aware of this. i am willing to wait an entire extra year (or more) if it means the difference between a good game and a great game. just about every gamer friend of mine is anticipating d3 and i would hate for a mediocre launch to turn people off and spoil the group play we have planned.

besides, torchlight 2 will come out in the interim and should fill in nicely while we wait. it will get some well deserved time in the limelight this way.

Pretty good, but is your DH almost entirely blue!

I think it might be time to start throwing my hat in those little contests to get a beta invite. This a long while off, and Im beyond antsy at this point. Cant take it. If only the contests didnt have odds worse that the local lottery :(

I just wrote a huge wall of text, explaining what Diablo meant for me and how tired I was at work (I am 38 years old, get an understanding/gamer spouse and you will always be a gamer) when Diablo and Diablo 2 got out and what I felt about the upcoming changes. Then I grabbed some coffee, pressed send, and Neogaf told me the token had expired and all my text disappeared. So, yeah, still up to you beta testers to give feedback. :D

Short version: I hope they get it right with the help of beta testers, but the upcoming changes sound good. Personally, I'd prefer it if they kept inventory scrolls, but the loot pinãta logic sounds great. Gimmicky stats are a pet peeve of mine, and I hope they get it down to proper basics.

This is pretty much why I am eager for Beta Patch 10 to come out, not only does it force me to replay and max out all 5 classes again, but it gives me the opportunity to create an informed opinion for you guys, as well as Blizzard of course, about these sweeping changes to the basic game play. Not that we ever got to use the Cauldron and Mystic in beta anyways, so they will not be missed in concept. As for the Scroll of Identification, I can understand the removal of it in it's current state (only required for Rare/Legendary/Set items.) but having players to arbitrarily right-click the item to identify it anywhere anyways, is a misused potential game concept. Instead why not have the Blacksmith, Jeweler, or even Cain identify the items for you, like in Diablo II, which would help Blizzards recent philosophy of having the town help break up player action, as well as giving it more importance. Other than that most of the changes I certainly agree with, but will reserve judgement until I play them.

So I've been in the beta for a while now, but I haven't really bothered with it. Dota 2 has pretty much set aside all of my free time. Anyways, I pop into this thread from time to time wondering how much has changed since the beta has started. From what I could understand, the beta was pretty short. What is keeping people on it?

Different classes.

Cravings.

Shame, I would actually like to hear that.

I dunno actually and i have a beta. I was done with it after making runs with 3 classes i want to play [Wizard, Monk and Demon Hunter] and testing Blacksmith. There is no challenge, no 'end game' [level 13 pvp would be great reason to farm items and use AH for example], no runes etc, so i dont know why people play it so much.

Yeah it could definitely do with PVP or maybe even a single higher difficulty level (should be doable with lvl 13 and good gear :P).

I'm a designer myself (albeit, a different industry) and giving yourself the time to iterate on your design decisions is the difference between bad, good, and great experiences. If you're not a creator, you wouldn't believe just how long it takes to get from initial ideas to something polished that millions of people use/play every day.

Given how many millions of people will play this game for billions of hours, every non-ideal or misguided design decision that causes frustration, confusion, or breaks the flow of the experience really is a huge deal. Not just for the success of the game, but for someone working on the game -- you just don't want to release something that has flaws you believe will significantly detract from the experience. It's a matter of personal pride and doing what's right.

...

That said, I can definitely sympathize with the folks who get to see so much development out in the open and not be able to play. Damn my beta luck. :(

Diablo III Senior Producer Steve Parker has announced that he is leaving Blizzard after five years with the company. Parker sent this out via Twitter:

Hey Twitter, I'm no longer working at Blizzard or on D3. I've had a great 5 years there and those guys are going to kill it with Diablo.

twitter message

I'm guessing he was a pioneer of the features that have been totally revamped in the new update, and is butthurt because they're undoing his work.

Probably not any sign about the quality of the game.

Or, he's leaving because the game is pretty much done once the changes are implemented and he feels he is no longer needed.

Thread needs more pessimism.
