I don't know if that's true. He dosent want the world to end. He cares about things and people. He just dosent know how to deal with them. He wants to kwow his father. He wants to be friends with Rei. Hell he wants to know why Rei has his fathers attention for a number of reasons. He even wants to figure out Asuka. But these people for whatever reasons are cold to him and that just discourages him.

Yeah, you're probably right. But by the time they get to EOE, what's her name has to physically pick up and push Shinji, and then threaten to kill him to get him to do anything he's so depressed.
 
Btw, I'm serious when I say we have an active Eva thread right now (right here!) and we don't need another one just because someone wants to text dump.

I hate when people use words like witness for a cartoon. You don't witness a cartoon, it's not a damn event. You consume it. It's entertainment.

Anyway, this doesn't help your argument that the wiki proves how deep Eva is:

Also, nothing in the wiki is particularly enlightening anyway. It's the same boring descriptions you'd get from the back of a box or an official website. It's actually kind of insulting that you would link it as a means clearing up any sort of confusion.

Okay, but I don't see anything that in Shin Mazinger that uniquely came from Gurren Lagann - it was clearly influenced by lots of other works, but I fail to see that you've drawn conclusive evidence to link the two.
 
Go look up on the zany faces of Boss and that Zenigata-esque character. They look more... "suppressed" vs. the Shin look.

And I'm simply talking about the exaggeration of Super Robot shows that GL apparently dictated, to which Shin seems to have picked up on. Back then a lot of SRs aren't really exaggerated and some are even "more realistic" than real robots.

I don't understand why Bakemonogatari gets nothing but overwhelming praise. It's just four vignettes. They're reasonably good vignettes, but the show isn't balls crushingly awesome or particularly well written. It isn't anything other than the standard "These girls all of supernatural problem of vague origin and conflicting mythology and our proxy for the Audience has to save them and earns all of their love! And we have a loli!" moe shows. The only thing that really differentiates it from all of the other shows of that type is Shaft's unique visuals and a bizarre, laid back tone.

K-ON! is awful, absolutely worthless in almost every way except the animation. The anime industry would be better off if the show never existed. Hell, the world would be a better place if it never existed. Fuck that show with a rusty spoon.

How can people so vehemently hate a show about friendship and NAKAMAs? K-ON! is the My Little Pony of anim-oh.

Some have too much pride-- some don't have any. Some care way too much(Misato) and others don't care at all(Gendo). There's a lot of debate to be had about Eva for sure, but I don't think it's a series where they intend for you to care a lot about the cast. That's why they kind of correct everyone's flaws in the recreated universe that Shinji constructs at the very end of the series. It shows you what life would be like if everyone balanced out...

I didn't insult either. I specifically said the point of EVA was partially about character flaws.

As for Gurren Lagann, it was delightfully refreshing in it's unashamed hot-bloodedness after a decade of staid EVA-inspired angsty mecha shows in the same way that EVA was refreshing for its time. GL was the anti-EVA, where Gainax came full-circle.

Also, I wouldn't say they don't intend for you to care about the cast. They intend for you to eventually care about them despite their flaws. Every character, even Gendo, has some redeeming qualities revealed at one point or another.

Very similar to how I always saw it. A group of former friends (my "anime" friends who I lost contact with since I grew up) were hardcore NGE fans and they seemed to break into that group:

Asuka: like real girls with personality, spunk, makes relationships harder but more worthwhile
Rei: the pretty, quiet, vulnerable, submissive girl with a dark side that very rarely comes out.

When I look back at it, all the guys who were into Asuka were/are in relationships and the Rei people are still single/creepy. ha

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic actually has humor. And a heart. K-ON is a coldly calculated waifu machine. Also, I'm a musician and they get a shit ton of stuff about guitars and music wrong, which shows that they didn't even care.
