Kingdoms of Amalur demo impressions thread [Up On 360/Origin/Steam/U.S. PSN]

Has anyone played it on all three systems yet? I have tried it on both the PC and PS3. It looks pretty good on both. Thinging about getting it on Ps3 but need to try 360 version as well hopefully us lowly Xbox silver users will get it tomorrow.

I've only played PS3 and 360 versions. Of the two I much prefer the 360 version. It seems to have fewer bugs (mainly referring to the ground disappearing on the PS3 version), and the PS3 demo's framerate is uncapped, which leads to some truly ugly gameplay especially when indoors.

Thanks for the comments, hopefully all the bugs are squashed. From reading IGNs segment review on the PS3 it looks like most are fixed already.

Well we know already the full game on PS3 the framerate is not uncapped so that is at least fixed.

I've played and preordered on all three. PC version is my favorite right now, 360 behind that. PS3 could jump in there ahead depending on what the frame rate lock ends up doing to it by the time the retail is released.

Judging by the demo and what people here are saying about a locked framerate on the ps3 version, looks like this game'll be the same as every other case this gen. 360 has better AA and slightly better effects but runs at sub-HD, whereas PS3 runs native but doesn't have as good AA.

I wish the devs would let us know what changes have been made in the final retail version.

It's unlocked in the ps3 version. Not locked.

There's a Curt Schilling interview on a podcast called The Final Score, too. Starts in their most recent podcast at about 1h 7m 30s regarding Amalur. Lots of information in it, supposedly, but I've not yet listened to it.

The biggest news I found from that
- First DLC will be released around Mass Effect 3 release, will have a lot of content
- DLC will be introducing more of the MMO world
- 2nd DLC confirmed

Yeah, apparently two huge DLC (so big that EA complained that they were too big) packs, one of which to be tied in some way to the MMO. Sounds exciting. Wouldn't mind a new area being added similar to Shivering Isles DLC.

Yeah, I read that on another site, plus "When it was sent to EA for approval, the response was that they had too much content in their DLC" and "KoA:Reckoning 2 will be made"

Note: Haven't heard it first-hand yet, but saw that in a summary of the podcast on another page.

hate the artstyle. absolutely soulless. actual game content is interesting, i like how it tries to blend good combat mechanics and the pretty meaty rpg part.

no full price purchase, but i might pick it up when it hits 20€ or so ...

Wowza.

Depending upon how big the game is that's either a good thing or a bad thing sales wise, but I do like the sound of it.

absolutely soulless.
Hate to agree with this but its its true. The game world is missing something very important that could keep me fully engaged but I haven't managed to put my finger on exactly what, so "soul" will have to do.

So maybe someone here can clarify this - when I look at the destiny cards for mix-class, in addition to more stat bonuses it appears like we also get new moves. Am I reading that right? It appears that if I want the ability to warp through enemies instead of rolling, I need 13 points in both Finesse and Sorcery, and then choose the card from the Finesse/Sorcery grouping. Am I right or way off?

I've reached the point where comments like this are just white noise now. I could never look at the art work of the Fae buildings, fae dungeons etc and think they were soulless. So much thought and effort went into making all of that unique. Not to mention the art/animations on the various enemies in the demo (boggarts, brownies, thresh). But I guess that's why we all have opinions.

Okay. I live in Japan and I have played the 360 demo, however, I can't get the demo off of Steam due to my region being blocked. Is there any way I can get the demo? I am going to play Mass Effect 3 on the PC since that's where I started and I've never had Steam block games from me until now. Having to play the PC version to get the items for ME3 sucks. I need another option.

I`m wondering about this too.

To unlock the Blink ability, you must either focus on pure Sorcery or Sorcery Hybrids destinies. The only other special moves are unlocked when you reach one of the seven Master destinies.

Some destinies provide unique skills. I believe only the pure sorcery and sorcery dual classes have some variation of the rolling substitute (blink).

Get it through Origin. ME3 is not coming to Steam, and the Steam version of Amalur is not EA published, so I highly doubt the Steam demo would unlock those items anyway. Other than that I don't know.

Origin blocks IP. So when I go to the site to get information or games it's all in Japanese. I can change languages to see the U.S. site, but the moment I actually try to download anything, it takes me to the Japanese site. It's incredibly frustrating, which is why I've avoided it. I can download and play the demo on the Xbox easy with no hassles, but the moment I want the PC one, it's blocked to hell and back. Looks like I won't be able to get the items for my PC ME 3 playthrough. I'm just a little mad about this.

I really, really do hope they add in more active abilities in DLC, maybe even a few more weapon types.

What would be even more awesome is a whole new ability tree and destiny cards, maybe a paladin, druid, or ranger type class.

Hmm, that sucks. Your best bet I guess is to give someone you trust your login credentials and have him/her play it for you. Other than that I really don't know, sorry.

I love the art style in this game so far. The colors alone make me giddy. COLORS DEVELOPERS WHY ARE YOU SCARED OF RAINBOWS?!

I agree. I think the world and overall look of the game is fantastic. I didn't/don't care for the way the world looks in Skyrim. If this game is "soulless", then Skyrim is simply dead.

I can't be the only one wandering in that world and finding something very much missing, something that meshes everything together. Lacking sould may be a harsh way of putting it, but yeah, all of these elements I love are in the game and yet it isn't impressing me as much as I'd expected. I'm buying this game is in the hope that the gameplay systems overshadow what it lacks.

Yep, but apparently bland has become good art. :] Bethesda are actually the James Cameron of the video game industry, not one artistic bones in their body even if they try. :P

Probably the fact that the two towns we can visit (even the great mysterious Fae place) consist of 3 buildings and 10 people standing/sitting and doing jack shit.

BUT. It's a first outing in one of the HARDEST genres to nail. I'm willing to meet them halfway here.

If you'd rather look at this game than the majesty which is Skyrim, I just don't even know. I think Lord of the Rings Online is F2P. Save some money.

Majesty? Man, Skyrim is more generic high fantasy than this game. My opinion, obviously, but I don't understand how one can be soulless while the other isn't.

Neither are soulless. Skyrim nails the Viking meets Conan vibe, and this really has some striking scenery and a very cute style (even though it cribs from WoW a bit too much).

Let's not let this devolve into a fantasy dick waving contest. The game isn't even released.

Same here. I'm definitely grading on a curve for the genre and hoping that with the full world opening up that I'll end up surprised. Its a risk though, but I'll take it because I like how the game is being approached, a ton of the design ideas, and how engaged 38/Big Huge have been with their community.

Not bad, but I'm going to wait until the steam version goes on sale. I don't support $60 pc games so even at $50 it would be day 1.

The UK Steam store has it for ~45$. If you could find someone to gift it from there, it would be under the price threshold you're looking for.

Yeah, I don't really have any basis to judge the game's design until I've seen more locations but I can understand why people interpret the colorful Disneyland vibe as soulless.

Neither are soulless.

amalur is, in my opinion. I think they did try to play safe when designing the scenario/universe. Its like a mish-mash of fable/wow/generic f2p korean mmo and other rpgs. it simply has no own soul. Well, thats just like my opinion.

Skyrim art design isn't soulless, it's just bland. Competent for sure, but there just isn't a particular edge to anything. It's by the number western rpg fantasy look and I'm sure a lot of developers could produce the same thing if they had nailed the genre sooner than Bethesda. Bland art design doesn't mean that it's badly done, but it lack a particular edge. Forget the colors of the Blizzard games, especially Warcraft and WoW and look at how distinct it is. There is this particular touch in how Blizz art designers draw their characters/animals/monsters or the architecture/structures and the landmass. Same is true for square-enix games, no matter if you love or hate the style. The witcher has superior art as well, since they nail the dark fantasy setting with their use of colors and lightning (like Demons or dark soul) while Bethesda doesn't have a clue yet. There's also a severe lack of imagination in term of creature design imo (Morrowind was their best effort to date) .

I accept PSN dollars and Microsoft space bucks. But yeah, colors colors colors as far as the eyes can see. I just played again and instead of heading into the mine at the start, I went there at level 4 and all the kobolds were swapped out with Rogue Kobolds. Nasty creatures.
